'The History of Sound,' Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor's gay romance, sets release date
One of the most anticipated gay films of the fall now has a release date.From South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (Living), The History of Sound is an upcoming historical gay romance starring two of Hollywood's most sought-after actors.Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) and Josh O'Connor (Challengers) star in The History of Sound as Lionel and David, respectively. The two young men meet and fall in love while attending the New England Conservatory as students during World War I.The two try to stay in each other's lives, but go their separate ways, until they meet up again years after college and embark on a trip around the Northeastern America to collect folk ballads. (@) Now, there's officially a day when people can watch the film in theaters: September 12.The History of Sound recently made its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and currently has a 65 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 37 reviews.Hermanus, O'Connor, and Mescal have been attached to the project since at least 2021, when it was first announced. At the time, Hermanus called Mescal and O'Connor "two of the most promising actors of their generation."After several years of delays, filming began in 2024. Now, viewers can officially start the countdown until they get to see it.
