'And Just Like That' S3 E3 Recap: Why would a man be there?
So few of the men turn out to be likable in the Sex and the City universe, but the women tend to let the nice guys finish last. However, in And Just Like That..., the men are testing our leading ladies' patience in this week's episode. From unclear relationship boundaries to backstabbing, the men are bothering these women living in this picture-perfect version of New York City. After an uneventful second episode, the pace picks back up with episode 3, titled "Carrie Golightly."This third episode sees our show's protagonist, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), decide that she doesn't want to be a corporate shill. She declines trips from Google or SXSW; instead, she'd rather go to Williamsburg, Virginia, to go and see her romantic entanglement, Aidan (John Corbett), and his two teenage sons. She manages to convince Seema (Sarita Choudhury) to tag along, but only after Seema gives a Samantha-esque one-liner: "I wouldn't even travel to Williamsburg, Brooklyn." Back home in NYC, Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) is dealing with documentary production woes. At the same time, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) seems to be investing more time into a budding romance, and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is trying to revive her party-girl days to sell more paintings. There was much to chew on with this episode (unfortunately, not Mama's Homestyle Fried Chicken), so here are our hot takes for this episode. If we had to choose, there are only three men we enjoy. There are only three tolerable men in this show: Charlotte's husband, Harry (Evan Handler); Lisa's husband, Herbert (Christopher Jackson); and Adam (Logan Marshall-Green). The rest are on thin ice. Christopher Jackson, Evan Handler on And Just Like ThatCraig Blankenhorn/HBO MaxHarry is a goofy, but lovable, supportive husband who wants to see Charlotte thrive and have some fun along the way. He goes for a night out on the town with her and the gallery girls to try and sell some paintings at the after-after-after parties, but can't seem to get his new jeans unbuttoned and accidentally pisses himself. But instead of making the situation about himself, he puts on his big boy pants, takes himself home, and champions Charlotte's quest to make some extra commission. We'll get to Herbert in a second, but Adam, the gardener who is tasked with reviving Carrie's outdoor oasis, deserves his moment to shine. Not only is he a born-and-bred New Yorker, but he's a man whose work landed him a feature in Vogue, where he was deemed "New York's Plant Picasso." As if he couldn't be more attractive, he's not shy about going after what he wants. He is outside Carrie's Gramercy Park townhouse when he runs into our favorite luxury real estate broker, Seema, as she stops by the house to pick Carrie up on the way to the airport. The two engage in some flirty banter, but it seems as though Seema may have underestimated his undeniable rizz.As Carrie gets into the car, she reminds Adam to watch over Shoe (her cat), and he confidently quips back, looking directly at Seema, saying, "Ive never met a kitty I couldnt bend to my will." If that doesn't make you blush, we genuinely don't know what could. We would love to see these two get together. We've had enough of Ryan Serhant in his Netflix show.Yes, Ryan Serhant is a good-looking man, but we'll never forgive him for what he did to Seema in the name of "business." After her gay business partner, Elliot (John Glover), tells her that he's retiring, he reveals that Serhant is buying his stake in the company, becoming the primary controlling partner and putting his name on the business. She tries to reason with the two men, but they are steadfast in their decision to ice her out of the business deal. So she decides that if she's gonna be kicked out, she might as well start on her dream of owning her real estate firm with her name on it. Ryan SerhantCraig Blankenhorn/HBO MaxSerhant quickly became one of the most visible brokers in the city after his (admittedly entertaining) Netflix real estate show, Owning Manhattan. His role in And Just Like That... is proving that even women with wealth, power, and money are subjected to the patriarchy. Seema tried to get him to agree to keep her name on the logo, but his acquisition means that he will steamroll the entire operation and slap his last name on everything in his signature color, bright cobalt blue. His presence makes sense as the catalyst for Seema's career change, but it doesn't mean we're happy about it.Now, why is Steve McQueen in it?No shade towards Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer Steve McQueen. We've never met, but we assume you're lovely. However, we have a bone to pick with you (or this fictionalized version of you, because the real one has nothing to do with this).Lisa learns that her longtime producer, Grace (Quincy Tyler Bernstein), got offered a dream job to work with McQueen (who directed 12 Years a Slave). Instead of finishing out their current project, Grace is considering abandoning ship and taking the job immediately, which Lisa takes as a dig and gets upset with her about. She takes out her frustration on a pot of mashed potatoes when her husband, Herbert (Christopher Jackson), comes in. He seems to have taken some of his level-headedness as George Washington in the original company of Hamilton to his character in this show because he listens to her frustration, calmly explains Grace's side, and helps talk her down from a ledge. That's why we love him; he's a considerate partner who doesn't ask his wife to sacrifice her ambitions, and an even better dad.Again, no shade towards the real McQueen (but the show version can catch this smoke), but we know you'd argue that this is just business. Still, we're pissed off that you even did this to our girl in the first place.
