In a conversation with Out, the Tony Award winner discusses which medium they feel "most at home" in, shares a fashion tip for Pride Month for the queer community, and recalls their experience attending the 2025 Met Gala earlier this year.See on InstagramOut: You've had a diverse career: From television to the stage to voiceover work. Is there one medium where you feel most 'at home' creatively?Alex Newell: They all provide something uniquely fulfilling. I love what I do on stage. I've always loved being on Broadway; there's nothing like a live performance. I also really enjoy television. That was my first medium, professionally, so I love it. And voice over, too. I'd said the same thing about making music and being a recording artist Here's something intimate that you get with just you and a microphone. That's always fun. Vicky is fashion forward in Another Simple Favor. Do you have any fashion tips for the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate Pride Month?I will always say that my fashion advice for everyone, at any walk of life, is to wear deodorant, and wear something that smells good.If you could ask anyone in the world for 'a simple favor' Who would it be, and what would you ask?If I could ask anybody in the world, I'd ask Beyonc Giselle Knowles-Carter for a birthday song. Or I'd ask Rihanna for an album.See on InstagramVicky works as a booking agent for Stephanie. If Alex could write a book, what story would you want to get out? It's gonna be my tell-all. I can't tell you though, you need to buy the book. There's no precursor. It's just going to drop, and we're all going to be reading it.Your next big moment is Lulu Is a Rhinoceros, where you play Cory. What's the vibe for the character? It's all about acceptance. It's showing them that you can be different. It's showing them that no matter what, you will always find someone that accepts you for who you truly are and what you really want to be. A lot of childhood is: 'You have to do this, you have to do that.' Rather than you can do this, you can aspire to do that, or you can have this identity that is not congruent to who you thought you were going to be.I think if you show that in the media, it gives the parent a lot of time to rectify their feelings about a lot of things, but also gives inspiration to the kid to go that path and tread that light. Cory is a good Judy and good kiki. See on InstagramYou ate with that beautiful Christian Siriano dress at the Met Gala. Who was your dandyism inspiration? My dandy inspiration was always Andr Leon Talley, who I've always thought as the 21st century's original dandy giving us all the drapery, the drama, the dramatics. Is there anyone, besides yourself, who you felt really killed it on the Met Gala?Diana Ross and Jodie Turner-Smith. She cleared the way, babes. delicioso. You have one of the best voices of our time. If you could use your voice to share a message with the queer community right now, what message would you belt out?My message is to always lead with love and acceptance in the heart. You never know when someone is struggling or what they're going through. So always lead with that love and that kindness.
