But whats most alarming about Metas new rules is that while the social media giant will still prohibit insults about someones intellect or mental illness, there is now a caveat for accusing LGBTQ people of being mentally ill because they are gay or transgender. We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words like weird, the revised company guidelines state.The decisionwhich comes at a time when 41% of queer kids seriously considered suicide in the last yearis seen as Zuckerbergs latest bow to Trump. The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point toward once again prioritizing speech so were going to get back to our roots and restore free expression on our platforms, Zuckerberg announced in a video he released on Tuesday. The tech CEO, whose company donated $1 million to president-elect Trumps inaugural committee and dined at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida in late November, says his fact-checkers had become too politically biased.
