Its important not to lose sight of LGBTQ+ joy, especially when times get tough. Here are five queer reasons to cheer.Rep. Sarah McBride sworn in: Congratulations to McBride, who is officially the first out transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives. McBride, who was formerly the first out trans Delaware state senator, was sworn in on Friday, Jan. 3. McBride has been a rising star in the Democratic Party since becoming the first openly trans person to address a major party convention at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.Queer Golden Globes: On Sunday, the 82nd annual Golden Globes were held in Los Angeles, and the star-studded event included several LGBTQ+ nominees and winners. Emilia Perez, a musical about a trans Mexican cartel leader starring trans actress Karla Sofa Gascn, took home the awards for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture Non-English Language. Hacks and Baby Reindeer, which both heavily feature LGBTQ+ themes, won in their categories, as did lesbian Baby Reindeer actress Jessica Gunning. Finally, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television went to Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country. After being lovingly heckled by fellow nominee Sofa Vergara, Foster thanked her team, her sons, and the love of my life, Alex (Hedison), ahh, thank you forever.Creating Change 2025: The National LGBTQ Task Forces Creating Change conference is happening Jan. 21-26 in Las Vegas. Started in 1988, this conference attracts more than 3,000 attendees to experience the latest in research and strategies to secure LGBTQ+ rights, network to acquire best practices and new teaching techniques. This year, News is Out will attend the conference for the first time and will report back on what we learn. Stay tuned.WorldPride in D.C.: After an exuberant and successful WorldPride in Sydney, Australia in 2023, World Pride is back in the states. Washington, D.C., will host WorldPride May 17 through June 8, 2025. Tapestry of Pride at the Kennedy Center, a sports festival, and an opening night concert featuring Shakira are part of the dozens of events hosted throughout WorldPride.Marriage equality champions receive the Presidential Citizens Medal: President Joe Biden took time during his last weeks in office to celebrate the achievements of U.S. citizens who have made a difference. Biden presented the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor in the U.S., to two pioneering marriage equality advocates: Mary Bonauto and Evan Wolfson.Bonauto was one of the attorneys who argued Obergefell v.
