A self-described San Diego girl dad is on a crusade to ban discussion of gay people in his daughters school, calling a social exercise about coming out disgusting.James Leon, the father of a freshman student at Rancho Buena Vista High School in the San Diego area, says his daughter came home recently and showed him a photo of instructions for a class activity that prompted her and six other students to walk out on their teacher. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity.Leon claimed in an Instagram post that the exercise was evidence, The principal, district and state are all complicit in grooming our children. In no way shape or form is this ok at all!!In addition to riling up parents online where Leon has posted his outrage for weeks, along with comedy videos like the time he fell through a chair on New Years Day the self-promoting parent took the time to write and advertise a letter written to the schools principal, Dr. Jose Manuel Villarreal, demanding to know what actions would be taken against the teacher responsible for the activity and menacing Villarreal with an appearance at the next school board meeting. This is insane. This is grooming. This is sick and twisted. There is not a single curriculum that supports this, Leon ranted in the letter, reported by the right-wing Daily Mail. Many friends of mine who are LGBT are disgusted by this, he claimed without evidence. Those LGBTQ+ allies werent there to back him up when Leon appeared at the next Vista Unified School District board meeting.I dont see how this is part of the California curriculum for education, Leon told board members. There is nothing that it does other than groom children. Its not okay, its disgusting, and it should not be allowed, he added. I dont think this assignment should ever be taught. A district bus driver parroted Leons outrage for board members, asserting, I am totally disgusted and ashamed I work for the district.Adding to the school board drama, and burnishing Leons online parental rights profile: the appearance of two San Diego PD cruisers and four officers stationed in the board meeting, there to answer a preserve the peace call.Who called the cops was unclear, but a muckraking local TV news reporter, tipped off to Leons appearance, was there to help stir the pot.Did an administrator approve that curriculum? Dave Summers of NBC San Diego preened repeatedly for his camera and school superintendent Dr. Matt Doyle before the board meeting began. A letter to parents from Principal Villarreal after the meeting sought to put the class exercise in perspective. It didnt quell Leons online outrage.Like all aspects of our curriculum, the health lesson on gender expression and identity was thoughtfully planned and delivered in accordance with and as required by state and district guidelines, Villarreal wrote. The lesson reflects our commitment to fostering empathy, understanding, and respect among our students, providing them with the tools to navigate an increasingly diverse world. RBV [Rancho Buena Vista High School] has always been and will continue to be rooted in community, inclusion, equity, and the shared belief in the transformative power of education.Villareal refrained from naming Leon when he called out the continued spread of misinformation on social media and the unjust personal attacks on one of our RBV teachers. Replied Leon on Insta: This lesson does not teach empathy at all and its disgusting!Absent from Leons online screeds, board meeting fulminations, and intimidating correspondence or any reporting on his girl dad crusade is an explanation of what exactly he finds disgusting about gay people. For Leon, like his dumbfounded reaction videos to so-called woke clips reposted by his fellow online travelers, the answer must be self-evident.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
