LIVE UPDATES: Supreme Court hears arguments in challenge to gender-affirming care ban
Today the United States Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments from both sides of the legal battle United States v. Skrmetti. While no decision will be made today, the arguments made will impact transgender rights across the country for decades to come, especially in the realm of gender affirming care for minors. The case concerns Tennessees 2023 bill, S.B. 1, and the impacts that it has on three families of transgender youth deprived of the ability to provide their children with lifesaving healthcare within their own state, as well as the right for several doctors to provide care for consenting patients. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee previously ruled to overturn the ban, whereas the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the ban to go back into effect, prompting the case to be sent to the Supreme Court for a final decision. The plaintiffs in the case are backed by the Biden-Harris administration and the Department of Justice, who challenge the legality of such a sweeping care ban. They are additionally represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and their attorney Chase Strangio, Lambda Legal, and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. On the opposing side is Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, representing the state of Tennessee. Skrmetti is represented by Tennessee Solicitor General Matthew Rice. The United States government, as a third party in the case, is represented by U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar.LGBTQ Nation will be providing live updates on the oral arguments, as well as sharing significant developments in the case and the arguments surrounding it as the day goes on. A live broadcast of the arguments can be found on C-SPAN.
