Mondaire Jones loses election bid
Out former Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) has lost his reelection bid to Republican Mike Lawler. Jones has not yet conceded, but he is far behind in the vote count, according to CBS News. Jones represented New Yorks 17th Congressional District from 2021 to 2023 and was one of the first two gay Black people elected to Congress. He lost his reelection bid in the 2022 elections after redistricting put him and got him booted by a more senior Democrat to New Yorks 10th Congressional District, where he lost in the primary.Jones ran this year in the 17th again.Earlier this year, Jones talked to LGBTQ Nation about what helped him come out publicly at age 24: One was seeing Black gay men represented in a show calledNoahs Ark, which was unlike anything I had seen growing up. That contributed to my coming out. It was also the progress that was being made in society. You know, seeing people be accepted in pop culture, like Frank Ocean and others, that helped give me the courage to live authentically. This is just one update in a bigger story.
