Please dont leave this world: Trans activists react to Donald Trumps victory
Trans people are terrified that Donald Trump has been elected president after he campaigned on a viciously anti-trans platform that many people thought was a losing strategy. But now that it has proven successful, Americans fully expect Trump and his cronies to fulfill their promise to obliterate trans rights. Related Voters hate the economy, so they voted for Donald Trump, despite knowing him Americans were willing to forget about an insurrection against the seat of democracy because they were upset about the price of English muffins. On social media, some trans activists are doing their best to instill hope in their followers, while others are warning them to prepare for the worst. We want to claim feminism but love the patriarchy. We want to be multiracial but love white supremacy. Were a nation of immigrants, but hate the recent ones. Were heroes ignoring our villainy. She continued, The sins dont disappear because you ignore them. Lets be clear. Americas values have always included exceptionalism, exploitation, domination, theft, and violence. Trump, too, is America. Quite possibly the most America. And we must accept that. Raquel Willis (she/her) (@RaquelWillis_) November 6, 2024Activist and journalist Erin Reed echoed this resigned tone but also instilled a glimmer of hope for the next generation as long as everyone is ready to fight.Trans people In some ways, we are no longer fighting for our own rights, but for the people [who] come next. Which is sad, but hopeful in some ways. Because when I think about who came before Dorchen, Jorgensen, Wendy Carlos Im not sad for what they overcame. I smile. Erin Reed (@ErinInTheMorn) November 6, 2024I will never stop telling our stories, because when those who come next look back to see those who made this world possible, itll be us they read about.Anyways, we have one other role in this story we are telling. And that is to make it hard for them, make it cost something, make their cruelty something they cant hide. Thats what I intend to do. Erin Reed (@ErinInTheMorn) November 6, 2024Before the election was called, Reed also posted a long thread about her own experience realizing she was trans in 1999 at 12 years old while living in rural Louisiana. She wanted trans people to understand that things have felt hopeless before, and its possible to keep fighting, survive, and maybe even thrive. To say things felt hopeless then is underselling it. I was trans, closeted, 13 or 14, watching gay marriage bans sweep the land. I kept a small part of me alive on those online D&D spaces, and I did my best to survive. I even had good years. The entire time though, I never lost hope, I watched as the culture war against gay people faded away and people came out and finally were free to marry. I watched as trans people, which I knew I was when I was 12, slowly started coming out too. And I made it to 29. Somehow. And transitioned And since then, Ive helped so many people find themselves, so many parents come to love their trans kids, so many people find freedom to be. That never would have been possible if I gave up at 12.I dont know how this night goes. But I know that I never regret the pain and struggle I went through back then. Because this was always going to be a generational fight. Dont give up. You never know who you will help in 20 years. Ill never stop.I don't know how this night goes. Erin Reed (@ErinInTheMorn) November 6, 2024Activist Allison Chapman, on the other hand, struggled to instill an inspiring message other than ensuring trans people know they are valued.Trans friends: I want be able to give you some hope right now but I just dont have it in me. Im terrified. But please dont leave this world. We need each other and I need you here. Trans friends: I want be able to give you some hope right now but I just dont have it in me. Allison Chapman (@AlliRaine22) November 6, 2024Another popular trans person on social media, who goes by Sofia Buff Girlfriend, expressed determination to keep going. To all the young trans people who are understandably scared right now, my best advice is to learn your history. Read everything you can. Read about all the awful and terrible ways this country has tried to suppress us and read about all the ways weve survived in spite of it all. Sofia ''Buff Girlfriend'' (@sofiabuffgf) November 6, 2024In a separate post, she remained steadfast in standing up for who he is. In spite of the disgusting lurch towards fascism were seeing tonight I wont flinch. Im not going anywhere. Trans people arent going anywhere. Dont you dare give those cockroaches the satisfaction of fear. She added, Weve lived through so much worse. Reactionaries have been trying to eradicate us in this country for well over 100 years and theyve failed every time. We organize, we fight back, and we win more than they ever took. Thats how this shakes out. In spite of the disgusting lurch towards fascism were seeing tonight I won't flinch. I'm not going anywhere. Trans people aren't going anywhere. Sofia ''Buff Girlfriend'' (@sofiabuffgf) November 6, 2024YouTuber Adequate Emily injected similar messages of dissent, declaring, They will have to f**king kill me if they want me to detransition. Thats final. Im not going back. Nor will I abandon my friends, my allies, those who are oppressed. They cannot buy my silence.Id rather live a short life standing up than spend a long life on my knees.
