Keturah Herron makes history as first queer woman of color in Kentucky state senate
Kentucky has voted Democratic candidate Keturah Herronto be a state senator, making Herron the first outLGBTQ+ woman and first queer person of color ever elected to the Kentucky state Senate. In a statement, Herron said, I am very humbled to continue to work for all Kentuckians as I move to the Senate. We know this work is very hard and we are at a pivotal time in our nation. I will continue to speak the truths for our people, build coalitions, and find others to run for office as well. I will do it with courage, boldness, and confidence even when the days are dark, she added.LGBTQ Nation spoke with Herron earlier this year. I really believe that its all of those different identities that makes me qualified and makes me allowed to stand in space and advocate and write policies for things I know will help our community, Herron said in the interview. She is a former policy strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Herron was largely responsible for the unanimous passage of Breonnas Law that banned no-knock police warrants in the city of Louisville. We do this work on a day-to-day basis knowing were just here to plant seeds and get us further along, but its going to be the people who come behind us who are going to be the ones to make the change we really want to see, Herron said. This is just one update in a bigger story.
