LGBTQ+ advocates and organizations respond to HHS report on transgender youth
On May 1, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a 400-page reporttitled Treatment for Pediatric Gender Dysphoria. LGBTQ+ advocates and organizations like Human Rights Campaign, Trevor Project and LPAC are condemning the report as misleading. In a Bluesky post, the Human Rights Campaign called out the reports endorsement of exploratory therapy, a practice critics liken to rebranded conversion therapy.RFK Jr.s Department of HHS released a deliberately false report, the outcome of which was predetermined by the Trump admin, regarding best-practice medical care for trans people as they lay the groundwork to replace it with a rebranded version of so-called conversion therapy.Other organizations expressed similar concern.LPAC, the nations only organization dedicated to advancing the political representation of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates, issued a press release regarding the report. For decades, every major medical associationincluding the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatricshave affirmed that medical care is the only safe and effective treatment for transgender youth experiencing gender dysphoria, said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. This report is simply promoting conversion therapy by a different name and the American people know better. We know that conversion therapy isnt actually therapy It isolates and harms kids, scapegoats parents, and divides families through blame and rejection. These tactics have been used against gay kids for decades, and now the same people want to use them against transgender youth and their families. The Trevor Project, the leading national organization in the U.S. focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ young people under 25, addressed the report in a social media post on Instagram and Facebook. The HHS report on transgender healthcare released today is pushing the same dangerous, discredited conversion therapy by a different name a disproven set of practices that attempt to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity. Research shows youth subjected to these practices are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.Georgia Equality released a statement saying, Medical care is essential and life-saving for transgender youth. This report threatens the ability of transgender youth to live free and full lives, while also threatening the rights of parents and caregivers to transgender youth, and the medical providers who treat them. 98% of people who receive transition-related health care continue to receive that health care throughout their lifetime. This story is developing.
