LGBTQ Nation convened the leaders of the LGBTQ+ movement to debate their vision for equality
For the past several years, the LGBTQ+ movement has had to face a troubling new reality: our opposition has switched its targets in our community from adults to children, introducing hundreds of bills across the country attacking their rights to medical care and an equal education. At the same time, peoples control over their own bodies is facing unprecedented attacks just after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that will affect LGBTQ+ peoples access to reproductive health care. Simultaneously, many corporations are turning their backs on the meager commitments they made to diversity initiatives in 2020. All of this is occurring as anti-LGBTQ+ forces have turned away from the fundamental principles of democracy, and an election looms where the United States could possibly elect as president someone who tried to violently overturn an election.LGBTQ Nation wanted to know how the leaders of the LGBTQ+ rights movement are thinking about these problems and how theyre approaching the future. We convened five executive directors of the largest LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations for a non-partisan roundtable on the state of the movement. The panelists include Jaymes Black of The Trevor Project, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen of Advocates for Trans Equality, Alexis Kantor of Family Equality, Kelley Robinson of the Human Rights Campaign, and Imani Rupert-Gordon of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. We hope youll take the time to watch this important discussion.
