Kamala Harris urges followers never give up the fight in concession speech
Vice President Kamala Harris urged followers to never give up the fight during her 10-minute concession speech at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington D.C. on Wednesday afternoon. At the outset, she said her heart was full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country and full of resolve to keep fighting. She also thanked her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, and the many workers who aided her campaign, acknowledging, I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now. Related Please dont leave this world: Trans activists react to Donald Trumps victory Trump, too, is America. Quite possibly the most America. And we must accept that. While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign, she said. The fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness and the dignity of all people, a fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation, the ideals that reflect America at our best that is a fight I will never give up.I will never give up the fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations; where the women of America have the freedom to make decisions about their own body and not have their government telling them what to do. We will never give up the fight to protect our schools and our streets from gun violence. On the campaign. I would often say, When we fight, we win. But heres the thing: Sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesnt mean we wont win. The important thing is, dont ever give up. Dont ever give up. Dont ever stop trying to make the world a better place. You have power. You have power. And dont you ever listen when anyone tells you something is impossible, because it has never been done before. You have the capacity to do extraordinary good in the world. She then told her followers, Do not despair. This is not a time to throw up our hands. This is a time to roll up our sleeves. This is a time to organize, to mobilize and to stay engaged for the sake of freedom and justice and the future that we all know we can build together.Theres an adage, she concluded. The adage is, Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. I know many people feel like we are entering a dark time. But for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case. But if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant billion of stars. Please dont leave this world: Trans activists react to Donald Trumps victory
Trans people are terrified that Donald Trump has been elected president after he campaigned on a viciously anti-trans platform that many people thought was a losing strategy. But now that it has proven successful, Americans fully expect Trump and his cronies to fulfill their promise to obliterate trans rights. Related Voters hate the economy, so they voted for Donald Trump, despite knowing him Americans were willing to forget about an insurrection against the seat of democracy because they were upset about the price of English muffins. On social media, some trans activists are doing their best to instill hope in their followers, while others are warning them to prepare for the worst. We want to claim feminism but love the patriarchy. We want to be multiracial but love white supremacy. Were a nation of immigrants, but hate the recent ones. Were heroes ignoring our villainy. She continued, The sins dont disappear because you ignore them. Lets be clear. Americas values have always included exceptionalism, exploitation, domination, theft, and violence. Trump, too, is America. Quite possibly the most America. And we must accept that. Raquel Willis (she/her) (@RaquelWillis_) November 6, 2024Activist and journalist Erin Reed echoed this resigned tone but also instilled a glimmer of hope for the next generation as long as everyone is ready to fight.Trans people In some ways, we are no longer fighting for our own rights, but for the people [who] come next. Which is sad, but hopeful in some ways. Because when I think about who came before Dorchen, Jorgensen, Wendy Carlos Im not sad for what they overcame. I smile. Erin Reed (@ErinInTheMorn) November 6, 2024Before the election was called, Reed also posted a long thread about her own experience realizing she was trans in 1999 at 12 years old while living in rural Louisiana. She wanted trans people to understand that things have felt hopeless before, and its possible to keep fighting, survive, and maybe even thrive. To say things felt hopeless then is underselling it. I was trans, closeted, 13 or 14, watching gay marriage bans sweep the land. I kept a small part of me alive on those online D&D spaces, and I did my best to survive. I even had good years. The entire time though, I never lost hope, I watched as the culture war against gay people faded away and people came out and finally were free to marry. I watched as trans people, which I knew I was when I was 12, slowly started coming out too. And I made it to 29. Somehow. And transitioned And since then, Ive helped so many people find themselves, so many parents come to love their trans kids, so many people find freedom to be. That never would have been possible if I gave up at 12.I dont know how this night goes. But I know that I never regret the pain and struggle I went through back then. Because this was always going to be a generational fight. Dont give up. You never know who you will help in 20 years. Ill never stop.I don't know how this night goes. Andy Cohen has a positive post-election message we all need to hear: 'we will persist'
While many of us are still busy licking our wounds after watching Vice President Kamala Harris lose to a convicted felon, Bravo exec Andy Cohen is reminding everyone that we must persist. On Wednesday morning, shortly after Donald Trump officially became the next president of the United States, the 56-year-old Watch What Happens Live host posted an inspirational video on Instagram, and its exactly what we need to hear right now.Cohen who is a father to five-year-old Benjamin and two-year-old Lucy asked his son what he thought about the election results in a video he captioned God Bless America!Cohen asked, So, Ben, whats your take on the election? What do you think happened?Donald Duck won, Benjamin answered.Although Cohen appeared teary-eyed in the video, he still expressed his American pride and desire to keep working for a better tomorrow. We love our country, we do. We will persist, we will move forward, he said.See on InstagramWhile most people in the comments thanked Cohen for his remarks or echoed the same sentiment, one person was critical of celebrity endorsements for political office, The Independent reports.Harris was endorsed by a slew of high-profile celebrities like Taylor Swift, Beyonc, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Anniston, John Legend, and Cohen himself.Im impressed with this post Andy, its gracious and Im glad we agree we all love our country, the commenter wrote. But the celebs all endorsing her was not the flex you think it was. Americans are tired of the liberal extremism. I hope we can all move on together and find some unity somewhere. Its exhausting being this divided. Not to be deterred, the Real Housewives executive producer clapped back, writing that being an American means you can endorse any candidate. This is America, he responded. If celebs want to express themselves they should be allowed to like everyone else. Standing up for what you believe in is not a flex, it is AMERICAN.See on InstagramCohen has been vocal about his support for Harris, including posting an endorsement alongside a photo of him wearing a Kamala for President T-shirt while standing next to the vice president and making an I voted post with a pic of himself and his daughter Lucy captioned, I voted for Her, for her. While he may not have gotten the outcome that he had hoped for for his daughter, his message to his followers is powerful. We will persist!

    Mondaire Jones loses election bid
Out former Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) has lost his reelection bid to Republican Mike Lawler. Jones has not yet conceded, but he is far behind in the vote count, according to CBS News. Jones represented New Yorks 17th Congressional District from 2021 to 2023 and was one of the first two gay Black people elected to Congress. He lost his reelection bid in the 2022 elections after redistricting put him and got him booted by a more senior Democrat to New Yorks 10th Congressional District, where he lost in the primary.Jones ran this year in the 17th again.Earlier this year, Jones talked to LGBTQ Nation about what helped him come out publicly at age 24: One was seeing Black gay men represented in a show calledNoahs Ark, which was unlike anything I had seen growing up. That contributed to my coming out. It was also the progress that was being made in society. The road to equality has always been difficult, but theres only one direction: Forward
This has been a challenging election season. The result was not what many of us had hoped. LGBTQ+ people across the nation are rightfully fearful of the impact the next presidency and a Republican-controlled Congress could have on our community and the country as a whole. Its a lot to process. Its essential to be there for each other, express our anger, fear, exhaustion, and disappointment, and take solace in the fact we are not alone. Then we will dust ourselves off and get right back to the fight. This is what we have always done.To paraphrase Human Rights Campaigns executive director Kelley Robinson, who spoke at a roundtable hosted by LGBTQ Nation last month: I wouldnt want to go back in a time machine. There is no better time in our history to be a queer person than right now. We can live more openly and enjoy more rights than ever.Of course, those rights can be fragile, and we will no doubt again be called upon to defend them while pushing for more. Our community has a deep history of advocating for and attaining change. From the Mattachine Society to the Stonewall riots to the HIV/AIDS crisis to Dont Ask, Dont Tell to the Bush administrations opposition to marriage equality, we have demonstrated fortitude and resilience in the face of attacks. Jamie Lee Curtis pledges to fight for gay & trans people who are afraid over Donald Trumps win
Academy Award-winning actress and LGBTQ+ ally Jamie Lee Curtis says gay and trans people are more afraid now that President-elect Donald Trump won the election. So the results are in. Many will be celebrating, possibly even gloating over their victory. Many will be stunned and sad with the terrible feelings of the loss. That is the same result despite who wins because thats what America and democracy looks like. Has always looked like, she began in an Instagram post published yesterday. Related 5 times Jamie Lee Curtis was an awesome LGBTQ ally The talented actress has demonstrated numerous ways that celebrities and parents can show their support for the LGBTQ community. So what does it mean? she continued. It means a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time. Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied. Many, minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid. We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. One protest at a time. [because] thats what it has always meant [to be an American] and will always mean regardless of the outcome. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis)Curtis who dressed up as a World of Warcraft character to officiate the wedding of her transgender daughter, Ruby has long spoken in support of LGBTQ+ rights, particularly trans rights. In August 2023, she gave a moving commentary on trans rights to MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. With trans rights under nonstop attack by Republican politicians over the past few years, Scarborough asked how it has affected her personally.Well, they demonize trans people, Curtis replied. Its awful and its terrifying, before noting that its getting worse. At the bottom line, life is about love, she continued. Being a parent is about love. And I love Ruby. Love her. People have said, Youre so great to accept her, and I said, What are you talking about? This is my daughter. This human being has come to me and said, This is who I am. And my job is to say, Welcome home. I will fight and defend her right to exist to anyone who claims that she doesnt. There are those people and its going to be a really challenging time.Im trying to learn the most important thing: that I dont know everything. There are a lot of things I dont know about and theres a lot of this that I need to learn. In March 2022, she wished her trans daughter a happy birthday in a message that declared her support for trans people everywhere.Happy birthday Ruby. I am proud 2 be your mother & am sending support 2 all trans families across the US targeted by conservative legislatures & I VOW 2 use my freedom of speech 2 SUPPORT my child & ALL trans children trying 2 live FREELY as who they are.Along with the message, Curtis posted a photo of herself pumping her first and leg into the air while wearing a trans Pride t-shirt. On Instagram, Curtisposted the same photoalong with a longer message. This country was founded on freedom, she wrote. A profoundly simple idea that everyone living here should be free to dream and achieve what they want freely. OUR declaration of independence promises that we are endowed with certain unalienable rights including Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..AND that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to defy it to ensure Safety and Happiness. This Trump activist vowed to fight sexually deviant secularism. He was caught with child porn.
The former leader of an evangelical get-out-the-vote group supporting Donald Trumps successful reelection bid was charged on Monday with eight counts of possessing child pornography.Prosecutors allege Jason Yates, former CEO of My Faith Votes, possessed a hard drive populated with sexual abuse images of minors under 14 years of age. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension began investigating the 55-year-old at the end of July, Religion News reports. Related Anti-LGBTQ+ church leader allegedly sexually abused kids. Hes facing 11 felony counts. MAGA musician Zachary Joseph Radcliff allegedly had multiple underage victims going back to 2011. My Faith Votes, which counts former Republican Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as an honorary chair, is one of a group of nonprofitsfounded to win support among the evangelical community for the former and future president. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Just weeks before the hard drive was discovered, Yates penned an op-ed for MAGA mouthpiece The Washington Times, urging devout Christians to fight sexually deviant messages aimed at children, in particular those identified as sympathetic to the LGBTQ+ community. This infernal programming is being downloaded into our children, and it becomes far easier when it finds no resistance in our public square when it is allowed to fill the void left by the absence of our faith, he wrote. The groups website blames Christians for failing to stand up against secular progressives which they fault for a litany of social ills.As a result of apathy at the voting booth and in public life, weve suffered devastating moral decay, declining religious freedom, immoral national debt, and the erosion of traditional family values, the groups website reads. My Faith Votes began its political proselytizing in 2016 with Trumps first bid for the presidency, spending millions on get-out-the-vote efforts aimed at Christians. The source of the groups funding is unclear.Ben Carson, Trumps future Housing and Urban Development Secretary and a client of the groups founder, influential Christian literary agent Sealy Yates, served as My Faith Votes first honorary chair. As part of their proselytizing efforts, Jason Yates promoted a vote pledge to be signed by targeted evangelicals. As a Christian, I commit to voting for candidates and policies that uphold the sanctity of life, the traditional family, religious liberty, and justice for all,the pledge reads.I believe that my biblical values should guide my choices at the ballot box, ensuring that our nations laws and leaders reflect Gods truth and righteousness.Yates tribulation was discovered by a relative who accidentally came across the hard drive in his office in July. That witness shared it with another relative who reported it to authorities. According to court documents, the drive contains over 100 still images and videos featuring the sexual abuse of minors under 14.Yates declined to provide a password for the drive but did admit he had a prior conviction related to the possession of child pornography, which had been expunged, the complaint filed against him reads. In the introduction to a GOTV video series produced by My Faith Votes, Yates asserts, Its time Christians let their faith guide their politics aligning their views with Gods Word and boldly confronting todays cultural challenges. Its critical, he says, that we reject apathy and think biblically about the issues in front of us, and this series is the ideal resource to help Christians navigate every political issue through the lens of the Word.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Not everyone survived Trumps first term. We need to fight even harder this time.
If you convince the lowest white man hes better than the best colored man, he wont know youre picking his pocket. Hell, give him someone to look down on and hell empty his pockets for you. -President Lyndon B.JohnsonThroughout the past 9 years, Donald Trump made clear his intentions to reverse the engines on the airship that is the United States. He has already caused deep gashes in the nations tarmac, and his reelection gives many of us painful and debilitating whiplash. Related Anti-Trump conservative says Donald Trumps incompetence gives Democracy a fighting chance Nothing is inevitable, anddemocracy will not fallovernight[but] Americans who care about democracy have work to do. He has engulfed this airship of politics in the smoke and flames of his lies, bigotry, and social divisions, resulting in the meltdown of common decency. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today We must now prepare our country again for his arrival at the Oval Office in 2025. To do so, we need to return ourselves to the fully upright and arms-locked position, keeping our values and one another tightly fastened together. Though political analysts forecast unusually heavy turbulence, our aircraft of state has a stellar record of withstanding even the most unstable social and political atmospheric conditions.Though the landing may be hard and bumpy and we may emerge a bit battered and weathered, we will remain in good working order, ready for another flight that is, if and only if we join and remain in coalition now and throughout the journey ahead. Threatened to the coreIn arduous times, I have come to know from personal experience that I must do my individual work and my personal processing, whether that be grieving, raging, emoting, or reflecting. It is difficult, if not impossible, for me to give my utmost until I refuel, refresh, and recover on an emotional and physical level. Thats my process.I believe that we need to work and fight even harder to connect with people from across all demographics with like minds and ideas to bring sanity back to our country.Coalitions, however, are often very difficult. As described by Black feminist activist and writer, Bernice JohnsonReagon, I feel as if Im gonna keel over any minute and die. That is often what it feels like if yourereallydoing coalition work. Most of the time you feel threatened to the core and if you dont, youre not really doing no coalescing.Even in an effective coalition, we also must expect that the near future will be very rough for progressives and moderates. But Im certain we will push the pendulum back toward the left if we stand together for the long haul. It wont come overnight. Ive learned from experience that the primary cause of burnout is having unrealistic expectations.Only time will tell whether Trumps actions and politics follow his campaign behavior and rhetoric. During his first term, Trump surrounded himself with some career political and military advisors who were able to set up guardrails, keeping him from swerving too deeply off course. Now with his decision to surround himself with right-wing sycophants and with his threats to be a dictator on day one, to suspend the Constitution, to punish his enemies from within, to deport millions of legal and undocumented immigrants, and to protect women whether they like it or not, Trumps first term has given him the training on how to manipulate the system to bend to his twisted desires. Now with his training wheels off and the guardrails torn down, his Project 2025 is now cleared for takeoff.I have learned many lessons in my studies of fascism and of genocides. Strong leaders whip up sentiments by employing dehumanizing stereotypes andscapegoating entire groups, while other citizens or entire nations often refuse to intervene. On a micro level, this is also apparent in episodes of schoolyard bullying. Everyone, not only the direct perpetrators of oppression, plays a key role.Working within his divide-and-conquer scapegoating tactics, as tyrants do, Trump has a long track record of defining Mexicans and later most Latin Americans as rapists, drug and human traffickers, and gang members who engage in high rates of crime on the U.S. side of the border. He has defined African nations as sh*thole countries and lodged insults at several Black female journalists. The list, of course, goes on. During the past year, the Republican Party spent approximately$215 millionin anti-trans TV ads, some of which they broadcast during National Football League games, targeting trans people as a national threat to girls and womens sports teams and claiming trans inmates consume taxpayer funds to undergo gender affirmation procedures. These ads, however, failed to mention that these procedures became mandated by law during Trumps first term in office. American strongmanThe United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is deeply alarmed at the hateful rhetoric at a conference of white nationalists held on November 19 [2016] at the Ronald Reagan Building just blocks from the Museum The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words. The Museum calls on all American citizens, our religious and civic leaders, and the leadership of all branches of the government to confront racist thinking and divisive hateful speechThese words from apress releasefrom the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, refer to a white nationalist conference headlined by neo-Nazi, Richard Spencer, who greeted attendees with a tribute to President-elect Trump by shouting, Hail Trump! Hail victory! from the stage before all in attendance gestured in a traditional Nazi straight-arm salute. Once identifying as a Democrat, Trump has transformed himself, at the very least, into the mouthpiece of the far-right-wing patriarchal Christian white nationalist segment of the Republican Party. In political terms, a strongman is one who leads by force within an overarching authoritarian, totalitarian, dictatorial regime. Sometimes the formal head of state, sometimes another political or military leader, the strongman exerts influence and control over the government more than traditional laws or constitutional mandates sanction.Strongmen situate themselves within positions along the political spectrum, usually toward the extremes on the right and the left. Some strongmen include Benito Mussolini of Italy, Adolf Hitler of Germany, Juan Pern of Argentina, Pol Pot of Cambodia, Fidel Castro of Cuba, Francois Duvalier of Haiti, Saddam Hussein of Iraq, Manuel Noriega of Panama, Vladimir Putin of Russia, Idi Amin Dada of Uganda, Viktor Orban of Hungary, and Kim Jong Un of North Korea. On the right-wing side of the dictatorial strongmans political spectrum, we find the philosophy and practice of fascism. While also deployed as an epithet by some, fascism developed as a form of radical authoritarian nationalism in early 20th-century Europe in response to liberalism and Marxism on the left.Umberto Eco, who grew up under the fascist Mussolini regime, enumerates the characteristics of what he calls Ur-Fascism, or Eternal Fascism, in 14 typical features. Hestressed, These features cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.Believe the threatsBut I have heard many people say, well, we survived Trumps first term, and we will survive this term also. No, many people needlessly did not survive because of Trumps denial and refusal to alert and mobilize the nation earlier to the dangers of the Covid-19 virus under his watch.Maybe we should ask the legions of people who remain skeptical and in denial of the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic: those who assert that it was a hoax, something contrived by the media to take down their hero, Donald Trump, those who claimed that wearing a mask and socially isolating deprived them of their liberty and their First Amendment right of freedom of association. We should have taken a representative sample of these deniers to visit near-filled Covid-19 emergency rooms to see what patients were experiencing: people whose noses and throats were stuffed with plastic tubing, those attached to ventilators, people whose organ systems shut down, the dead who succumbed to the virus. In the clinics, they would have also seen the looks of stress and grief on the faces of the heroic healthcare workers who were functioning in previously unimaginable conditions and were bearing the brunt of essential lifesaving duties as the deniers stood among them. They should have been made to attend memorial services for the victims of this partly preventable pandemic and witnessed the effects the losses had on friends and family. And some pregnant women did not survive Trumps state abortion bans instigated by his nomination of three far-right Supreme Court justices who, along with three other conservative members of the bench, refused to conserve the 50-year precedent of safe and legal reproductive healthcare. The experiment we know as the United States of America has somehow endured for nearly 250 years. But who knows how many people will survive the next four years? Who knows whether the social institutions of our nation will survive? Will we continue on our path toward becoming a more perfect union, or will we devolve into tyranny? Wherever we go and whatever we become is in the power of We the People. In the immortal words ofBenjamin Franklinat another critical moment in our history, We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.Consider the words of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words. This is not mere hyperbole.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Exit poll shows 86% of LGBT people voted for Kamala Harris
Edison Research, the firm that conducts national election exit polling for CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC, found that 86% of respondents who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender voted for Kamala Harris, while 13% voted for Donald Trump. The poll has its limitations. It was only conducted in 10 key states and two randomly selected days before the election to catch early in-person voters. The poll also involved a phone, mobile, text, and email component to capture mail-in voters. The survey involved 22,509 respondents. Related What do we do if Donald Trump wins? What a fascist in the White House could mean for LGBTQ+ rights, and the resistance it could inspire. The same poll in 2020 found that only 64% of LGBT people voted for Joe Biden and 27% voted for Trump. This is lower than the GLAAD/Pathfinder poll conducted shortly after the 2020 election that found that 81% of LGBTQ+ voters voted for Biden. Subscribe to our Newsletter today If the Edison exit poll in 2024 is an accurate reflection of LGBTQ+ peoples voting patterns, then it shows a strong shift to the left in the LGBTQ+ population in the last four years. This could be because of the non-stop attacks on LGBTQ+ people coming from the right, both in the form of attacks on transgender youths rights to health care and to equal education, as well as the popularization of the groomer slur online, generally directed at any LGBTQ+ person or ally who works with children.A September poll conducted by HRC and Community Marketing & Insights found that 74% of LGBTQ+ people planned to vote for Harris, and only 7.5% planned to vote for Trump, with the rest undecided or voting third-party.Other demographic findings from the exit polls include that women were more likely to vote for Harris at 53% compared to men at 42%. Black people were the racial/ethnic group most likely to vote for Harris (85%), followed by Asian Americans (54%), Latinos (52%), and white people (41%). Harris also did slightly better with people whose 2023 family incomes were over $50,000 (49% vs. Trumps 48%) than those with family incomes lower than $50,000 (47% vs. Trumps 50%). When it came to religion, a majority of Jewish, something else, and none voters cast ballots for Harris, while majorities of Protestants and Catholics voted for Trump. What is deadnaming and just how harmful is it to the transgender community?
Over the last few years, awareness around transgender rights and respect for identity has become more mainstream, despite heavy opposition, and has an increasing focus on the importance of language and recognition. In the wake of the 2024 election, who knows what we're about to head into, but we can't dwell on that. We have to focus on the future, and we have to continue to fight for inclusion at all times and for all people, especially our trans friends. One key aspect of affirming a transgender persons identity is using their chosen name rather than their deadname the name they were assigned at birth but no longer identify with. Deadnaming, which refers to calling a transgender person by their pre-transition name, can have severe social and emotional impacts. If its not immediately obvious as to why, lets go over what it is, why its harmful, and the broader cultural and legal implications of respecting a transgender persons chosen name. What is deadnaming?Deadnaming involves referring to a transgender person by the name they used before they transitioned, often associated with their birth identity. This outdated term may be used unintentionally by those unaware of the individuals new name, but at times, its also used intentionally, either to undermine the persons identity or as a form of discrimination. For transgender individuals, the use of a chosen name is not simply a preference; its an essential part of their identity and self-affirmation.According to GLAAD, misusing or disregarding a chosen name contributes to feelings of dysphoria, distress, and invalidation. They note that respecting names is integral to respecting the person and the gender identity they embody. Why is deadnaming harmful?Deadnaming has psychological consequences, often causing feelings of distress, alienation, and emotional discomfort for transgender individuals. When a transgender person hears or sees their deadname, it can be a reminder of a painful time before they could live authentically. The act of deadnaming, especially when done repeatedly or publicly, reinforces a sense of rejection and invalidation. According to a 2024 study by the American Psychological Association, the use of a transgender persons chosen name has a positive impact on mental health, whereas deadnaming or misgendering can lead to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. The history of the term "deadnaming"The term deadnaming began to emerge in online transgender communities in the early 2010s, gaining traction on social media and LGBTQ+ forums where transgender individuals could discuss their experiences more openly. According to the 2021 update Oxford English Dictionary, when deadnaming was updated as both a noun and a verb, says deadname was first recorded in a 2010 Twitter post, but the verb deadnaming goes back to 2013. As the understanding of transgender issues evolved, so did the language, with deadnaming entering mainstream usage alongside terms like misgendering. Today, deadnaming is widely recognized in discussions around transgender identity, with advocacy organizations, educational resources, and public figures increasingly denouncing its use. Deadnaming's psychological impactA consistent body of research emphasizes that social acceptance, including the use of a chosen name, is strongly linked to positive mental health outcomes for transgender people. A 2018 study published by The Journal of Adolescent Health showed transgender youths who could use their chosen name reported significantly lower rates of depression and anxiety than those who could not. This study underscores the importance of respecting transgender peoples names, as even a small gesture can be deeply validating and supportive. The Human Rights Campaign also highlights the importance of using a persons chosen name in all legal, medical, and social contexts, noting that deadnaming is not only a form of emotional harm, but also that deadnaming occurring by the police or the media could result in many trans and gender non-conforming fatalities being inaccurately reported.Legal implications and workplace considerationsIn professional and educational settings, policies regarding deadnaming vary widely. Some companies and institutions have adopted formal policies to prevent deadnaming, recognizing the potential for lawsuits or discrimination claims if employees or students are misnamed consistently. For instance, the HRC provides resources to organizations on how to create trans-inclusive spaces, which include updating records and offering training on the use of chosen names and pronouns. While there are no federal laws directly prohibiting deadnaming, some states have introduced anti-discrimination laws that indirectly address this issue by protecting transgender individuals rights. Additionally, institutions that fail to uphold these standards may face backlash or legal challenges under workplace discrimination protections.Practical steps to avoid deadnamingFor allies, family members, and coworkers, avoiding deadnaming involves a conscious commitment to using a persons chosen name consistently. Here are some practical tips:Ask and Affirm: If youre unsure about someones name or pronouns, be respectful when you ask, and do so politely. Affirming someones identity goes a long way in creating an inclusive space.Update Records: Workplaces and schools can help prevent accidental deadnaming by ensuring that all records are promptly updated to reflect a transgender persons chosen name.Apologize and Move Forward: If you accidentally use someones deadname, acknowledge the mistake, apologize, and make a conscious effort not to repeat it.Simple actions like these are integral to trans-inclusivity and respect. Deadnaming may seem like a minor error to some, but taking the time to use the correct name is essential in affirming someones identity. We're all in this togetherDeadnaming remains a pressing issue in the broader conversation about transgender rights and identity respect. Yes, we're living in some scary and uncertain times right now, but there are still people out their who recognize and respect that a transgender persons chosen name is more than just politeness; its a matter of validating their identity and affirming their right to self-definition. As understanding of transgender issues grows, terms like deadnaming help educate the public on the profound emotional and social implications of language. Allies, organizations, and society as a whole can contribute to a more inclusive world by committing to use chosen names and rejecting practices that undermine transgender identities.Through small actions and educated awareness, we can foster a world where everyone feels seen, respected, and affirmed.

Trump's victory signals BIGOTS it's OK to VILIFY the LGBTQ+ community
When I took the dog out this morning, I did not want to open the door. We went out the backdoor of the building, because I well, we didnt want to see anyone. Freddy is a Puerto Rican stray, so hes sad too. When I opened the door, a garbage dumpster was sitting in the middle of the back parking lot, outside its gated area, and there was garbage spread about. It was so unusual. It was also telling.I cannot think. I cannot speak. I cannot smile. I cannot emote, so I write. But what? The sun is streaming in my window, nearly blinding me, but its darker here than its ever been. I cannot see, and cannot see the point in writing something thats going to tell you everything will be alright because no one wants to hear that right now. I certainly dont. And no one wants to hear the reasons why he won. Why she lost. Or why some people in this country turned America upside down like a garbage dumpster, spilling out refuse from the sea-to-darkened sea. In 1980, former Ronald Reagan campaigned on Morning Again in America. He I cant write his name is about darkness at dusk in America. There's no way to sugar-coat this.Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics. Sign up for The Advocate's email newsletter.Ive written about my best friend of 40 years who railed at our community with hurtful words, tropes, dangerous stereotypes. He was granted a permission structure with all the hate emanating from the GOP ticket. He said the LGBTQ+ was a cult. The irony was lost on him.We are not a cult. We are a loving, nurturing community that rightly takes pride in our history of continually overcoming severe obstacles to survive and thrive. Weve gained so much. Achieved so much. Celebrated so much; yet, we still have so much work to do.After what happened last night, I dare say that we might have to start all over again. We are not safe. We will have a president, a Congress, a House speaker who are vehemently opposed to us. And a Supreme Court that is gunning for us. We are less than them. We are evil to them. We are bound for hell to them. We are garbage to them.Gay men are f**s, lesbians are confused, bi people dont exist, trans people are freaks and trannies, and nonbinary people are ridiculous jokes. These slurs were heard at Trump rallies, on the campaign trail, in GOP ads and social media posts, and face-to-face. We heard multiple stories about door-to-door canvassers being confronted and attacked with angry words that oozed abhorrence. The torrent of hate towards queers provides a permission structure, that allowed my friend to spew venom, and now has been extended to over 70 million people. Dont think for a minute that these people will suddenly be nice and accepting. Kindness and openness did not win last night. If Americans were disgusted with that language, and the way queer people were being referred to, they would have responded accordingly. That is why, today, the only thing I can think about is how much we have to band together once again and perhaps like we have never before. We are about to come under attack in ways we cannot even fathom. Suddenly, we look at our lives, our marriages, our children, our jobs, and our very beings, and see the precipice of hate and exclusion. But we will not, and we cannot, accept any infringement of our rights. With so much success over the years in getting to where we are today, we always saw the rainbow of a Pride flag in the distance, at the end of the road. Now an ominous, opaque cloud blocks our vision. Suddenly, we find ourselves blinded to our future.Last night was an aberration. A bad dream. A torrid dream. This morning, we woke up with sweat, chills, anxiety, and our hearts beating furiously, pounding against my rib cage, looking for a way out of this hellscape. At some point, I suppose Ill dissect what went wrong last night. Now, I eat a poisoned crow that makes me violently nauseous. I cannot figure out a way forward, because going forward at this point seems like an implausible task. The pain is too great to even conceive and consider that the bright sun, shining down on me now, will one day warm me again. But for now, the only, fleeting, static, fluttering hope I do have is that I belong to the most resilient community in the world, filled with love, compassion, acceptance, and inclusion. We are not garbage, despite the toxicity and bane that is going to engulf us in the years to come. We are heroes. We always have been. And weve always come out on top. We will get through this.Right now, that provides a tiny bit of solace. Dem chair apologizes after shameful comments blaming trans people for Harris loss
In the aftermath of big gains for Texas Republicans in Tuesdays election, the states Democratic party chair laid the blame in part on Democrats going too far in support of trans rights. We can say, OK, we respect peoples right to say we dont want my taxpayer money to be used for that, and at the same time support transgender rights, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said on Wednesday. Im not saying that we need to take that position right now. But when those votes happen, we need to recognize that there are going to be long-term political consequences when we do that. Related Donald Trumps gay niece mourns his victory: I really did think we were better than this Mary Trumps message was ripe with sadness, but she also promised to keep up the fight. After a concerted attack that included a $215 million TV ad campaign demonizing trans people, Tuesdays election yielded the biggest win for a Republican presidential candidate in Texas in 20 years. Trump managed to flip one Democratic stronghold on the border that had gone blue since 1896, according to the San Antonio Current. You could, for example, you can support transgender rights up and down all the categories where the issue comes up, or you can understand that theres certain things that we just go too far on, that a big bulk of our population does not support.Reaction from the trans community was swift and unsparing.Shameful. This is unacceptable, posted Austin drag queen Brigitte Bandit, who frequently speaks to LGBTQ+ issues in the state capitol. Trans Texans arent your f**king scapegoats, DEMOCRATS.The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas issued a statement demanding an apology from Hinojosa for his harmful and divisive rhetoric, which they say implies that trans Texans bear responsibility for the disappointing losses by Democrats in Texas. Blaming members of the LGBTQ+ community particularly trans Texans who already face disproportionate discrimination and hostility is deeply irresponsible and counterproductive. The Texas Democratic Party should be a safe haven for all marginalized groups and should champion inclusion, they wrote.Hinojosas explanation could be seen in Democratic Senate candidate Colin Allreds approach to his failed race against incumbent Republican Ted Cruz, who hammered Allred on trans rights with his share of ads in that multi-million dollar TV campaign.Allred went on defense in response, issuing an ad that said in part, Ted Cruz is lying again, but now hes lying about our children. Im a dad, Im also a Christian. My faith has taught me that all kids are Gods kids. So let me be clear: I dont want boys playing girls sports or any of this ridiculous stuff that Ted Cruz is saying. Trans journalist Erin Reed called Allreds response ill-advised andwrote that, although Allreds ad doesnt specifically mention transgender people, his line about boys playing girls sports is likely to be heard as an anti-trans dogwhistle in Texas, where nearly every anti-trans ad has framed transgender girls as boys.Allreds approach didnt work. Cruz took the race by nearly 10 points.Wednesday night, Hinojosa was forced to concede that his response was ill-advised as well.I extend my sincerest apologies to those I hurt with my comments today. I recognize the pain and frustration my words have caused, he tweeted Wednesday night. In frustration over the GOPs lies to incite hate for trans communities, I failed to communicate my thoughts with care and clarity.Hinojosas term as state chair ends in 2026. Women & trans people are stockpiling abortion pills & hormones in the wake of Trumps victory
Reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare providers are seeing triple-digit increases in orders and inquiries following Donald Trumps election to a second term.Clearly, people are trying to plan for the reproductive apocalypse that we anticipate will be happening under a Trump presidency, Elisa Wells, co-founder of abortion pill finder site Plan C told The Guardian. Throttling access to abortion pills, which account for the majority of abortions in the U.S., is one way theyll do it.One tactic could be enforcing the Comstock Act, a 19th-century law named for an anti-vice crusader that criminalizes the transport of pornography, contraceptives and abortifacients through the mail. Luke Evans shares Gemma Arterton's FLAWLESS response to his coming out
Luke Evans is getting candid about his experience as an actor in his new memoir. One anecdote in particular is already sticking out the time he came out to Gemma Arterton. The actor initially came out in 2002, but had stopped speaking about his sexuality publicly for some time. It resulted in a re-closeting of sorts, which left him often having to make a decision as to whether to be truthful to the people around him or just keep his personal life to himself."When I started working in movies, it suddenly became an issue again because at that time you just didnt get openly gay actors playing straight romantic leads," he writes in Boy from the Valleys: An Unexpected Journey. One such instance was when Evans was cast in 2010's Tamara Drewe alongside Gemma Arterton. He writes that his boyfriend at the time was only able to visit him once on set, where he was generally introduced as a friend, "because we couldn't be open about our relationship."Evans ultimately decided to open up to Arterton."Our bedrooms were next to each other in our hotel and when I confessed that Lee was actually my boyfriend she said with a smile: 'Honey, Im in the room next door I know!'" he wrote."It was such a relief to be able to be open with her and know that she had my back regardless, because she knew how the industry worked and the pressure I was under," he continued. "The big American studios were still very much of the 'a man is a man' mindset."Considering Arterton herself has gone on to star in queer films such as Vita & Virginia and Summerland, it's lovely to hear she had such a great reaction to Evans' coming out and that he had her support when he needed it.

Jamie Lee Curtis pledges to protect gay & trans kids & proves she the ultimate ally AGAIN
Jamie Lee Curtis is easily one of our favorite celebrity parents who are proud of their transgender children, and she's upped the ante yet again with her continued vocal support for the community in the wake of the stunning US election.Following the results of the election, Lee Curtis posted two separate photos -- one affirming that she will still say gay and protect trans kids, the other a painting of an eagle with an American with a caption full of both rage and hope."Many will be stunned and sad with the terrible feelings of the loss," she wrote. "That is the same result despite who wins because that's what America and democracy looks like. Has always looked like."See on InstagramAfter addressing the question of what this means, Lee Curtis continued, "It means a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time. Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied. Many, minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid. We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. For all those people there will be those who will help you. Me included."See on InstagramThis is far from the only time Lee Curtis has been vocal about her support for the community, as well as any other marginalized people out there. Here are five other times she proved she was a staunch advocate and ally for the trans and queer community as a whole.1. Supporting Ruby when she came out View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis)Back in 2021, Lee Curtis started her public journey as a trans ally when she revealed her youngest child, Ruby, was transgender in an interview with AARP Magazine. She expressed pride in Ruby's journey and emphasized how it reshaped her understanding of gender, "We have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby."2. Officiating Ruby's cosplay-themed weddingSee on InstagramA year after that, in May 2022, Lee Curtis officiated her daughter Ruby's wedding to her partner, Kynthia, a move she had also mentioned she would make during her AARP interview. The ceremony was a colorful cosplay-themed event held in Curtis's backyard, symbolizing her acceptance and celebration of Ruby's identity.3. Her impassioned speech on Morning Joe View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis)In July 2023, during an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Curtis passionately defended her daughter's right to exist amidst rising anti-trans rhetoric. She declared, "I will fight and defend her right to exist to anyone who claims that she doesn't."4. Our sister publication naming her Advocate of the Year View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Advocate (@theadvocatemag)In October 2023, our sister publication, The Advocate, honored Curtis as their Advocate of the Year, recognizing her unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals. In her acceptance, she emphasized the importance of inclusion and love.5. Her frequent attacks against anti-trans legislationSee on InstagramLee Curtis has been vocal against discriminatory laws targeting transgender individuals. On her daughter's birthday, she posted on Instagram, expressing pride in Ruby and condemning conservative legislatures targeting trans families. She wrote, "I am proud and grateful to be the parent of a trans child and am sending support to all of the trans families across the U.S. who are being targeted in this moment by conservative legislatures...Now politicians are proposing that parents providing gender-affirming care for THEIR OWN children are felons and deserve prison time."

Instead, Now its out there, and it just perpetuates more hate, he continued, adding, The thing that I regret the most is saying that word, meaning the anti-gay slur.He said the use of the slur takes insults to another level. Its just off the wall and over the line, and its dehumanizing. And got under my skin and elicited a reaction, he said. In the heat of the moment, I thought in my head, Hey, what can I say back to him? Im going to throw that right back in his face. I know now that that was I shouldnt have done that, because now theres a video out there with me saying that word, him saying that word, and its not good for anybody. That has been seen by millions of people, and I share fault in perpetuating it and having that out there, he said. His brother offered sympathy, saying, I know its weighing on you, brother, that s**t sucks. You shouldnt feel this much scrutiny. The real situation is you had some f***ing clown come up to you and talk about your family, Travis Kelce continued, and you reacted in a way that was defending your family, and you might have used some words that you regret using, and and thats a situation that where you just got to kind of learn from and and own. And I think you owning it, and you speaking about it shows how sincere you are to a lot of people in this world.Thats just not who you are, he concluded. I love you, brother. While some social media commenters criticized Kelce for repeating the homophobic slur, many forgave him for throwing the slur back in the harassers face. One commenter highlighted byLGBTQ Nations sibling siteOutsportswrote, This video highlights a breakdown in social norms. You shouldnt just be allowed to abuse famous people in the street, because you have your phone in your hand and want to make a video for attention. People who do this are degenerates. Kelce [was] right to smash his phone.Jason Kelce spoke about the cell phone incident during ESPNsMonday Night Countdown, stating,Im not happy with anything that took place. Im not proud of it. And in a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just dont think that thats a productive thing.I dont think that it leads to discourse and its the right way to go about things, he continued. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldnt have. So, I think the bottom line is, I try to live my life by the golden ruleits what Ive always been taughtI try to treat people with common decency and respect, and Im going to keep doing that moving forward, even though I fell short this week. While neither of the Kelce brothers has made any public statements about the LGBTQ+ community, Swift is an LGBTQ+ ally.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

    Hawaii passes pro-same-sex marriage amendment
Hawaiis ballot initiative to protect marriage equality in the state has passed, with 52% of voters in favor and 40% opposed. Voters in the Aloha State were asked to repeal the state constitutional amendment allowing the state legislature to ban same-sex marriage, which was originally passed in 1998. Related Barrier-breaking Kim Coco Iwamoto explains how she took down a powerful Democrat Full of energy and love for her community, she talked to LGBTQ Nation about Donald Trump, winning local elections, and helping the homeless. The ballot initiative, or Question 1, read: Shall the state constitution be amended to repeal the legislatures authority to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples? Subscribe to our Newsletter today Im glad that the people of Hawaii voted to remove discrimination from our bill of rights, Jeff Hong, vice president of the ACLU of Hawaii board of directors, told KHON2. Hong said that polls showed that Hawaii voters support marriage equality three to one, but that that support went down when they read the ballot question as it was written, showing that many people might not have understood the language. That kind of double-negative speak is confusing, he said.Same-sex couples challenged the states denial of marriage licenses in 1993, which led the state to enact a ban on same-sex marriage in 1994. The trial court found that the state was discriminating against same-sex couples in 1996, and two years later, voters put language in the state constitution allowing the legislature to ban same-sex marriage. In light of this, the state supreme court reversed the trial court decision.Marriage equality was legalized by the state legislature in 2013, 15 years later. The 2015 Supreme Court Obergefell v. Hodges decision also protects the right of same-sex couples to marry at the federal level, but several states have been repealing their anti-marriage amendments in light of the Courts Dobbs decision, which overturned the federal right to an abortion and showed that the conservative Court could be coming after other groups rights.Voters in California and Colorado also voted this past Tuesday to remove anti-marriage language from their state constitutions.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Elon Musk's daughter Vivian slams her father & Trump, talks about leaving the U.S.
Elon Musk's outspoken transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, isn't holding back her feelings about her father and President-elect Donald Trump. "I've thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I don't see my future being in the United States. Even if [Donald Trump is] only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don't happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon," Wilson wrote on Threads yesterday. Then, on Thursday morning, the 20-year-old blasted Musk, too. "Watching the grown members of my ex-family' in the media/twitter-sphere recently makes me glad that I didn't develop my genetic pre-disposition of apparently not having a fking spine. That's all," she wrote. She didn't mince words and was clearly referencing people like her tech billionaire father when she wrote, "fking politicians and oligarchs who caused this to happen.""Direct your anger towards them," she continued, but later elaborated, writing that she was "not saying to not be mad at trump supporters/voters."She also said what many people are feeling since the election results were announced, "If any of y'all are trump supporters you can go ahead right now and get the fk off my page."Wilson has been an outspoken critic of both Trump and her father, who has made a point of misgendering her in public forums. After Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden last month, she also slammed Trump and Musk. "Fuck every single one of you motherfuckers who was at that Madison Square Garden rally, and fuck everyone who had anything to do with that racist bigoted bullshit," she wrote on Threads Monday. Donald Trumps gay niece mourns his victory: I really did think we were better than this
Donald Trumps gay niece, Mary Trump, devoted election season to doing everything she could to warn the public that her uncle was a grave danger to us all. In her most recent blog post, she does her best to process what she calls this nightmare. This is much worse than 2016, she opened, but today I am possessed of an exquisite detachment that, while I know it is bad for me, I will hold onto for as long as I can. Because I really did think we were better than this, and I dont want to confront the feelings associated with recognizing just how wrong I was. Related Kamala Harris urges followers never give up the fight in concession speech Sometimes the fight takes a while, she said. That doesnt mean we wont win. The important thing is, dont ever give up. She praised Kamala Harris for running a nearly flawless campaign and lamented that for many reasons rooted in our dark and desperate and unacknowledged history, too many people refused to buy into her message of hope and unity. The psychologist did not try to offer comfort or hope, instead declaring that, in reality, there is no silver lining here. At the same time, she committed to continuing the fight. Im not going anywhere, she said. The fascism is here and we have to confront it head-on. There arent words to convey effectively how devastating it is that the American experiment has failed; to learn so many of us apparently place no value in the promise this country offered; to find that tens of millions of us are completely sanguine about the repercussions the rest of the world and future generations now face because of this violent, reckless decision. She also blamed the mainstream media for false equivalence and normalization as well as lies. She pledged to continue writing and telling her readers the truth, concluding, We have our work cut out for us, but we know what we need to do.On social media, Mary Trump posted a short, simple message: I am so deeply sorry. Gays are going absolutely feral over Zedd's stunning new album
We all want to know... who would Zedd collaborate with next? The EDM legend has worked with the biggest female artists in the world including Ariana Grande, Hayley Williams, Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, and so many more. His latest catchy single "Lucky" features vocals from bisexual singer Remi Wolf and the trippy music video has all of his fans absolutely living."It feels surreal! It's been nearly a decade since my last album. I finally created Telos and I'm unspeakably proud of what I've achieved with this album. I'm in a really lucky position and I don't take that for granted," Zedd tells PRIDE. See on Instagram Zedd's fans have followed his impressive career since he exploded onto the scene with his massive hit "Clarity" back in 2012. For many EDM fans, that song was their introduction into the genre."Some [fans] may have been 13 years old when they heard my music and now they're 25 or 26 years old! That's a pretty big difference... they've doubled their lives! 'Clarity' has never been bigger. It's crazy to say, but it gets bigger with every show that I play. It gives me goosebumps every single night."Since the mainstream acclaim of "Clarity," Zedd has dropped so many notable bangers with our favorite female singers, but he's just getting started. The star is manifesting even more powerful collabs in the future."The amount of amazing singers out there that I would love to work with is genuinely near endless. Dua Lipa has a very specific voice that I love. Adele has an incredible voice... and then there's the Billie Eilish's of the world. I almost can mold any song to any voice and I'm very thankful for that." See on Instagram Zedd's portfolio certainly speaks for itself, but he's well aware that the LGBTQ+ community makes up a very large part of his passionate fanbase, which he couldn't be more grateful for."[Here's] the perfect opportunity for me to give a huge thank you, not just to all my fans, but to specifically my LGBTQ+ community. There's so much love and openness. It's easier for them to express their feelings and I'm looking for emotion. I'm looking for energy. My biggest fanbases end up being in the cities with the biggest LGBTQ+ communities."Telos is available everywhere now. To see the full interview with Zedd, check out the video at the top of the page.

Heres when to cut a toxic person out of your life, even if they're family, say therapists
Theres a popular meme circulating right now about the difference between disagreeing on politics and your humanity one is a surmountable disagreement, the other is a non-negotiable. And its true, denying your humanity and access to human rights should be the ultimate red line in any relationship. (@) That has never felt more stark than in a week when millions of people many who profess to know and care about queer people took to the voting booth to say we dont matter. But of course, in practice, its rarely that cut and dried.Theres love, history, social expectation, and attachment healthy and otherwise that complicate the decision to cut someone out of your life, particularly when theyre family. But having a toxic person in your orbit can be devastating to your mental and emotional well-being, which makes it necessary for you to cut them out of your life. But how do you know its time to take such a drastic measure? To answer that, PRIDE reached out to the experts Dr. Michelle Beaupre, PhD, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker; Brianna Paruolo, a psychotherapist; and Maya Weir, a clinical psychologist to get their take and advice on how to identify the toxic people in your life, how to make the decision to remove them from it, and how to take care of yourself afterward. How do you recognize someone toxic in your life? The first step to removing toxicity from your life is recognizing that its happening. Thankfully, there are myriad clear signs of this, Dr. Beaupre tells PRIDE. Instead of owning up to their mistakes or the harm theyve caused, they might shift blame, make excuses, or flat-out deny any wrongdoing. This leaves you feeling frustrated and unheard, as the person never truly recognizes the impact they have on others, she explains. Without accountability, theres no real opportunity for growth or resolution in the relationship.Hand in hand with this is a lack of empathy. A toxic person often shows little to no empathy, meaning they dont seem to care about how their actions affect others. They may dismiss your feelings, ignore your struggles, or not offer support when you need it most. This can create feelings of isolation and neglect, as empathy is key to maintaining a healthy emotional connection. When someone cant or wont understand your perspective, it weakens the bond between you, she says. And finally, toxic people are highly manipulative. This happens when someone uses emotional tactics, guilt, or deception to control or influence others for their own benefit. They might twist the truth or pressure you into making decisions that arent in your best interest. Over time, this leaves you feeling drained, confused, and powerless, as the relationship becomes more about their needs than mutual respect, explains Beaupre. But thats not all: other behaviors to be on the lookout for include consistent patterns of criticism and belittlement, gaslighting and reality distortion, boundary violations, and creating chaos and drama, adds Paruolo. How does it FEEL to be around someone toxic? The tricky part of identifying a toxic person in your life is how the elements of manipulation and gaslighting can make it hard for you to see it but even then feel it. As they say, the body remembers, and the body keeps score. So, what does it feel like to be around someone who is toxic? Everyones body responds differently to having a toxic person in your life, but some common body sensations are: tightness in the chest, tension in the shoulders, tension in the throat area, clenching fists, and/or nausea, Weir tells PRIDE. Common emotions when you are dealing with a toxic person are anger, rejection, sadness, shut down (or dissociated), or triggered.Another symptom is a heavy, generalized feeling of dread when youre in their presence, adds Dr. Beaupre. Its like a weight on your chest that doesnt go away, even if youre just thinking about interacting with them, she explains. This feeling can start off subtle but may grow stronger over time. Its your bodys way of signaling that something isnt right. You might feel drained, anxious, or even physically exhausted after spending time with them as if their presence is taking more from you than youre able to give. This persistent heaviness is a red flag that the relationship may be affecting you in unhealthy ways.More signs include sleep disturbances, feeling constantly on edge or hypervigilant, second-guessing yourself frequently, exhaustion after interactions, loss of confidence, difficulty making decisions, and feeling like youre walking on eggshells, says Paruolo. When is it OK to cut someone toxic out of your life? Even if they are family? Is this feeling all too familiar? First of all, were so sorry. This is often incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, but at the end of the day, your mental health and protecting your boundaries are incredibly important. Its OK to cut someone toxic out of your life when your well-being is being compromised mentally, emotionally, or physically, says Dr. Beaupre. No matter who they are, family or not, your mental and emotional health should come first. Its not selfish to prioritize your peace, especially when you feel like youre constantly sacrificing it for someone who doesnt bring positivity or support into your life.Being family doesnt give someone a permission slip to abuse you, says Paruolo. If the cost of maintaining the relationship is more than the benefits, I strongly urge anyone to take an audit of whats in their control and how to make a realistic change.Weir acknowledges that making the choice to cut someone out of your life is a big decision, but adds, When you feel emotionally or physically unsafe, it is OK to cut someone out of your life. And cutting someone off doesnt have to be forever; you can also choose to take a break and see how that feels. Sometimes you may need to cut someone out for a certain amount of time to process and heal yourself, says Weir. What steps you can take to remove them? So, youve identified a toxic person in your life and youre ready to protect your peace. Now what?Dr. Beaupre suggests opening a dialog with the person youre cutting off, if its safe to do so. First, you can try talking to them honestly expressing how their behavior affects you. Sometimes, they may not realize the harm theyre causing, and a conversation could help open their eyes. If youre open to it, seeking therapy together can be another option, especially if the relationship is worth saving and theyre willing to put in the work. However, if they refuse to take responsibility or show no interest in changing, its OK to start pulling away. That being said, if you already know youre ready to cut ties, Paruolo says it can be fairly straightforward, Build a support system first. Set clear boundaries about contact, but expect and prepare for pushback, she warns. Weir also emphasizes the need to surround yourself with support first. Get other people who can support you and talk through it if you get backlash from the person. Having a solid support system is key to cutting someone out because the person may guilt you or shame you for cutting them out and you will need support to process that, she says. As for the actual severing of the relationship, you can do it at your own pace. Over time, you might naturally distance yourself, and thats OK. If things get really bad and its clear they wont change, you dont have to take a gradual approach. You can choose to cut ties immediately block them, stop responding, and move on, explains Dr. Beaupre. Sometimes, a clean break is the best way to protect your peace. Your emotional health is important, no matter who it is.How to take care of yourself after. Finally, its important to be gentle with yourself after all this. Even though this is the right thing for you, it can still be painful and confusing. Thats OK! After cutting someone toxic out of your life, my advice is to fill your cup with as much self-love as you can, suggests Dr. Beaupre. Take time to do things that make you feel good whether its a hobby, exercise, or simply spending time alone to recharge. Surround yourself with people who truly care about you and lift you up those who make you feel valued and supported. Let their love remind you of your worth. But you dont have to do it alone. Paruolo suggests enlisting the help of a professional. Seek therapy to process the experience, join support groups, [and] practice radical self-compassion, she says. Accept that grief is normal, even when the decision was right. At the end of the day, your healing is key. Create space for the positive, loving energy you deserve. By nurturing yourself and your relationships with people who genuinely care, youll begin to feel stronger, more at peace, and ready to move forward with your life, says Dr. Beaupre. The experts: Dr. Michelle Beaupre, PhD, LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Clinical Director at Villa OasisBrianna Paruolo, Psychotherapist, LMHC Clinical Director & founder at On Par Therapy NYC Maya Weir, Licensed Clinical Psychologist & founder of Thriving California

Over 150 LGBTQ+ organizationsrelease post-election shared solidarity statement
Following the results of the 2024 election, over 150 LGBTQ+ organizations released a shared statement about the future of LGBTQ+ rights and support. The organizations, including the National LGBTQ Task Force, PFLAG and GLAAD among dozens of regional organizations, state their commitment to continuing the fight for LGBTQ+ equality and freedom in the face of unprecedented backlash. Here is the statement in full. Ours is a long history of never backing down from a fight for our rights. United in our strength, during the most difficult of times, we have pushed forward and achieved significant progress across the decades. From the early days of the Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis, to the Stonewall Uprising and HIV/AIDS activism, to achieving marriage equality and anti-discrimination protections in the workplace, to the fight for transgender rights, and beyond, we march on.For every member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and for those who support us: Weve got this. Weve got us. No matter who you are, where you live, or the outcome of yesterdays election, today we are an LGBTQIA2S+ community united. Together, across races, places, genders, and abilities, we have shown up for each other by organizing, mobilizing, and casting our ballots for the freedom to be ourselves. Our work continues.Election outcomes at national, state, and local levels will impact our health, our safety, and our rights as LGBTQIA2S+ people and families. Despite anti-LGBTQIA2S+ efforts to divide our communities, and particularly severe attacks against transgender people and LGBTQIA2S+ youth, we have succeeded in moving a few steps closer toward equity and justice for our community. In particular, we celebrate the election of the first openly transgender person to U.S. Congress, Rep. Sarah McBride (Del.), as well as out lawmakers U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson (Texas), and State Rep. Wick Thomas (Mo.), and cementing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in California, Colorado, and Hawaii.Across the country, LGBTQIA2S+ organizations and advocates engaged and educated voters, made calls, sent texts, and knocked on doors to ensure every voter had the information necessary to cast a ballot. Every single conversation reflected our commitment to vote for our families, our freedoms, and our futures. We know that so much more work lies ahead of us. Yet as an LGBTQIA2S+ movement, we will continue to work towards what we always have: a country where all LGBTQIA2S+ people are safe, seen, and accepted for who we truly are, without exception. We are here together, and we will move forward. Weve got this. The Mud & Flood Fund aims to aid individuals, families, and small businesses who might otherwise fall through the cracks in being able to rebuild and come back stronger than ever! With the funds raised, the website states, the fund will assist homeowners in need through Henderson County Habitat for Humanity programs. In addition, a portion of the funds raised will be used to boost small businesses, the backbone of the local economy, buoying access to low-interest loans or services from the Chamber of Commerce to help them rebuild and thrive once again, the website states. Waters ends his video by making one more appeal on behalf of Vincent and Victoria Price. We know how supportive the horror community is, he says. This is a way you can help people experiencing the real horror of losing everything. Come on, monster kids. From beyond the grave, Vincent Price commands you to donate. Elon Musks trans daughter might leave the country because of Trumps victory
Vivian Jenna Wilson, Elon Musks estranged transgender daughter, announced on Threads that in the wake of President-elect Donald Trumps electoral victory, shell likely move to a different country.Ive thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I dont see my future being in the United States, she said. Even if hes only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically dont happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon. Related Elon Musk publicly misgendered his daughter. She ripped him to pieces. She went on a lengthy rant on her Threads account against him. Wilson has been estranged from Musk since 2022, when the billionaire failed to accept her transition. Since then, he has claimed that she died to the woke mind virus, to which she replied, Last time I checked I am, indeed, not dead I look pretty good for a dead b**ch. She criticized those who blame specific demographics for why Vice President Kamala Harris lost the election as problematic, saying, Blame this demographic, blame that demographic No. Blame the f**king politicians and oligarchs who caused this to happen. Direct your anger towards them. She made a note, however, to call out Trump voters. Im not saying to not be mad at trump supporters/voters btw, by all means, go ahead, you have the clear from me. If any of yall are trump supporters you can go ahead right now and get the f**k off my page. She, like many in the LGBTQ+ community, expressed grief about the election results as well. Im sorry, everyone. The future doesnt seem to be turning out how I hoped, she wrote.Wilson has gained a substantial following on Threads in recent months, often gaining media attention for criticizing the actions of Musk, especially when he decides to attack Wilson. She previously pointed out that Musks viral claims about her in an interview with right-wing media icon Jordan Peterson are entirely inaccurate. This is entirely fake. Like, literally none of this ever happened, she said in response to claims that she was gay, loved musicals, and said fabulous. Ever. I dont even know where he got this from. My best guess is that he went to the Milo Yiannopoulis school of gay stereotypes, just picked some at random and said eh- good enough in a last-ditch attempt to garner sympathy points when he is so obviously in the wrong even in his own f**king story. She criticized Musks portrayal of her as a far-left neo-Marxist/communist while also misgendering her.If youre going to lie about me, why would you choose a method so obnoxious in its stupidity. Its beyond stupid, its desperate, she wrote. The fact anyone believed this for even five seconds is beyond me. Not to mention going out of your way to misgender me which is both completely transparent and honestly just sad.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Women RULED music this year. They SHOULD rule the Grammy nominations, too.
Who runs the music world? Girls! The 67th Grammy Award nominees will be announced this week, and we are hoping, and expecting, to see women dominate the awards.Last year, women were on top, with Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Victoria Mont winning the Big Four awards of Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist respectively. The year before, women took three of the four categories, with Lizzo and Bonnie Raitt winning Record and Song of the Year and Samara Joy winning Best New Artist. (Harry Styles won for Best Album for Harry's House.)We expect this year to be similar, so here are the women we expect to dominate this year's Grammy nominations.Album of the YearAlbum of the Year should be a category almost entirely filled with women, if not swept by them. With Beyonc's Cowboy Carter, Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Charli xcx's brat, Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine and Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet all but guaranteed spots in this category, at least six of the eight spots will be taken by women. The other two spots could go to woman-made albums like Kacey Musgraves' Deeper Well, Brittany Howard's What Now?, or even Dolly Parton's Rockstar.Song of the YearWhile Kendrick Lamar makes a strong argument with his brilliant lyricism in "Not Like Us," we can't help but predict this category will also be dominated by women. Beyonc's "Texas Hold 'Em," Ariana Grande's "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)," Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!," and Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather" are the clear frontrunners, and if Eilish wins, it will be her second win in this category in a row, and her third win in the category overall.Other likely nominees include Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" or "Please Please Please," Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' "Die with a Smile," Kacey Musgraves' "Deeper Well," and Doja Cat's "Agora Hills."Unfortunately, "II Most Wanted," by Beyonc and Miley Cyrus, which is the best song of the year, was not submitted in this category and will only be up for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.Record of the YearRecord of the Year is a performer's award, unlike Song of the Year, which goes to songwriters. We predict many of the same songs nominated in Song of the Year will do well here, specifically "Texas Hold 'Em," "Birds of a Feather," "We Can't Be Friends," "Die With a Smile," "Espresso" and "Good Luck, Babe!"However, Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" and Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" could surprise the women in this category to win.Best New ArtistBest New Artist should come down to a battle between pop princesses Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter this year. They have been two of the biggest names in music all year, with Roan having seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100, and Carpenter having a whopping twelve songs chart. If the award doesn't go to one of them, it should be handed over to an artist like Shaboozey, Doechii, Flo Milli, Raye, Sexyy Red, or Rene Rapp.Other women nomineesOthers who could score nominations, but probably not in the Big Four categories, include Dua Lipa for her pop album Radical Optimism, Charli xcx for her song "Guess" with Billie Eilish, Troye Sivan (an honorary girlie), Tyla, rappers Megan Thee Stallion for her songs "Hiss" or "Mamushi," and Cardi B, and R&B singers like Muni Long, Tinashe, and Kehlani. The nominations for the 67th annual Grammy Awards will be announced on Friday, November 8.
