Paulie Calafiore is ready to enter his submissive era & dishes on if he's ready to bottom
Paulie Calafiore is thriving in his experimental era.Since coming out last year, The Challenge and Big Brother alum is living his best life by opening up on his spicy kinks and posting plenty of sexy photos to show off his confidence in his sexuality. Now, he's taking things up a notch and dishing on the hottest new toys he's using in the bedroom, which his own partners can't even comment on."People have to sign NDAs when they come into my room. There have been things that I've started to use in the bedroom that are a little more fun [like] some plugs while being inside somebody. The gags, the dildos, the vibrators... they're all fun," Calafiore tells PRIDE. See on Instagram Calafiore has been outspoken on being a dom top throughout his life, but the star seems to be opening his mind to more submissive sexual encounters."I'm a big proponent of toys. I feel like every hole should be filled at all times on both people. Baby steps... everything is very small."Since the reality star is getting more comfortable inserting objects into his own body, could a person eventually fill that role (or hole) in the future?"It has not happened yet, but I'm open to it. It really depends on the right person. I'm actually a huge romantic and throughout parts of my life, I switched off that side of me, but I am a romantic person."Fans can keep up with Paulie Calafiore's spicy content by following him on Instagram. 'Yellowjackets' Jasmin Savoy Brown & Tawny Cypress are flirting on IG and being adorably gay AF
Great news for Yellowjackets fans, the first look at season three of the Showtime original thriller shows that things just keep getting gayer even behind the scenes!Out actor Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays Teen Taissa, posted a photo shoot with Tawny Cypress, who plays their modern-day counterpart. "The casting went tf off" commented Grey's Anatomy actor and musician E.R. Fightmaster. They're absolutely right, as the resemblance between Brown and Cypress is uncanny.Brown proved they're not afraid of being one of those gay couples who look exactly alike if Cypress is down for it, adding a flirty caption to the photos aimed at their costar.See on InstagramThe caption read, "Gay level 6: crush on someone who looks exactly like you will when youre older @tawnycypress @yellowjackets S3 first look." I'm dying to know what Gay levels 1-5 are according to Brown, sign me up for that crash course ASAP.It only got gayer with Cypress's response. She commented on the post, writing, "that's hilarious :) i look like i'm about to put you in a half nelson. " to which Brown smoothly replied, " be my guest ".See on InstagramThe photos were just one of fives sets offering a first look at Yellowjackets season 3. Each one showcases the paired young version and contemporary version actors for five of the main characters: Taissa, Shauna, Misty, Van, and Lottie. Unfortunately, none of the other actors used the promos to shoot their shot with their doppelgangers, a real missed opportunity on their parts. There's no firm release date for season three, but it is expected to be premiere sometime in early 2025. As long as the actors keep using the time in between now and then to shamelessly flirt with one another, we say take all the time in the world.

Angelina Cruz was a school teacher. Then a union leader. Now shes headed to the state legislature.
In the birthplace of the Progressive Era, things arent as progressive as they used to be.At the turn of the last century, Wisconsin nurtured ideas like workers compensation, progressive tax reform, direct election of U.S. senators, breaking up monopolies, utility regulation, and other far-reaching reforms. It was a union stronghold. Related Out Dem. Will Rollins is fighting to unseat a 15-term MAGA Congressman with an anti-LGBTQ past When your congressional representative cares more about their own pockets than yours, Rollins says, you cant trust them. Now its legislature is dominated by conservative Republicans with a margin of almost 2-1 in both chambers. Former Republican Gov. Scott Walker stripped public employees of their collective bargaining rights in 2011. Wisconsin went for Donald Trump in 2016. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Thats the political environment queer public school teacher and union president Angelina Cruz is walking into when she becomes the new Democratic state representative from Racine in January. She faces no opposition in this weeks election.Cruz, 45, is proudly progressive; her two big issues are public education and labor rights, obviously, she says. Healthcare for Wisconsinites is another, with access to gender-affirming and mental healthcare two pieces that are really important to our community.Cruz spoke from her home in Racine, where it was about 75 degrees and sunny, which is really unusual for Wisconsin at this time of year. Its kind of disturbing, she said, but also kind of nice.LGBTQ Nation: You grew up in the Village of Caledonia, a largely rural area along the shore of Lake Michigan. Theres a beautiful historic lighthouse on the water, and it looks like an ideal place for a kid to call home. What was your favorite thing to do there in the summer growing up? Angelina Cruz: Oh, I was outside quite a bit, swimming, biking, playing baseball, just sort of getting in the mix with three brothers. So those are my favorite things to do in the summer. I mean, here you dont have many months to be outside, right? So, like when its good to be outside, you better be outside and enjoy it.Youre the granddaughter of Mexican migrant workers who settled in Wisconsin, and youll be the first Latina state rep from Racine in the Wisconsin Legislature when youre sworn in in January. What was the balance your family struck between assimilation and honoring their Latin American heritage when they arrived in the state, and what effect did that have on you?My grandfather refused to speak English, though he knew English, so only Spanish was spoken with my dad. My mom grew up without Spanish being spoken at home. And my parents made the decision, pretty much, to raise us like white kids, is how I like to describe it. They sent us to parochial school and felt like it was really important for us to assimilate and have that experience so that we could be successful. And so I think in many ways, it sort of created a little bit of separation between our Mexican culture and just like an American culture. Ive said to people, Im trapped sort of in this weird gray area where me and my brothers, were not white people, but also were not Mexican enough to be Mexican. And I dont think that is a truly unique experience in this country, but that has been mine for the most part. You started out as a fifth-grade teacher. 1) Are you smarter than a fifth grader? And 2) how do you describe kids at that age, that sweet spot between childhood and their teenage years?Oh my gosh. Fifth grade, I will say to anybody whos going to ask around here, is the best grade. I would tell my fifth graders because its elementary school and elementary school teachers teach everything I would joke with my students that I know everything (laughing). They played along because they were sweet and kind, but I think its a great age. I think theyre old enough to really be receptive to a lot of experiences and learning just as much as they can. Theyre just sort of starting to really drill down on their critical thinking skills, so you can do a lot more with them, and they still want to please adults, right? So its just like this nice balance. But theyre also figuring out who they are. Its fun to help them understand that its okay to make mistakes, like even as you get older and become an adult, that is the thing that we all do. Its what you do with the mistakes that you make. So I have a tender spot for fifth graders. Theyre the best. You describe yourself as an Act 10 teacher. What is that?Act 10 was state legislation passed in Wisconsin in 2011 that stripped public sector workers of their collective bargaining rights. Public school teachers descended on the Capitol in 2011 in the Wisconsin Uprising to protest, but unfortunately, the law passed. I cite that as sort of a point in my story arc, because it really sort of shifted what my focus was, in terms of my activism and where I am today. I had always kind of nominally been involved in local politics, but I took it so personally that someone would go after teachers who like I mean, breaking news, but none of us make a lot of money. It was a bogeyman argument that our governor at the time, Scott Walker, was making in terms of public sector workers having Cadillac benefits and making all this money, and they were going to balance the state budget on the backs of working-class people. So I really got politically active. You come to electoral politics after eight years as president of your teachers union. Whats prepared you in that job for your work as a legislator?Thats a great question. I think really honing in on the ability to come to mutual understanding with people that you dont necessarily always agree with. That could be a little dicey, because Im the president of the teachers union and I dont intend to step down. I will be serving as the only union president in the Assembly when I actually take office. Your predecessor in your redrawn district is a Republican whos running for another term from another newly drawn district next door to yours. How cooperative has he been about putting his old constituents in your hands, and what does that entail?I dont find him to be extraordinarily communicative. I sat next to him for an entire panel, maybe two weeks ago, and the guy wouldnt even look at me. So yeah. I have the most diverse district in Racine, it covers most of the city proper, and hes not reflective of the diversity in the city, is the very kind way I will phrase that. You describe yourself as queer. How do you define that? That is a good question. My experience as a queer person (laughing).Lets just say this: Ive always been super-adjacent to the LGBTQ community, always and forever. My best friend is transgender. Like, Ive just always been really entrenched in the community, but my partner Ive been with for the past three years is the first woman that Ive ever been with, and so, I dont know. Youre the first person that asked me this, and Im having a hard time articulating it.I think I gravitate towards the label queer because it feels less boxed in than saying Im a lesbian, because I dont know that I entirely identify as a lesbian. Ive been with men, but I also dont feel comfortable calling myself bisexual, for whatever reason. So I just feel like queer is a kinder, more inclusive term for me to use while I figure it out, if that makes any sense at the age of 45 years (laughing). I hope that sort of did not sound completely rambly.Following on that, what role does your identity play in your campaign, or has it? I mean, it has. I think the intersection of me being queer and Latina has really broadened peoples level of comfort in approaching me with talking about whatever. When I talk about representation mattering, I think theres a sincerity that people feel when Im saying these things, whether its being queer, but also Latina in a state like Wisconsin, which is very its a very white place.I cant remember who I was interviewed by, but it was the first time I found out that Wisconsin was running the largest block of LGBTQ candidates in the country, and I was like, Well, what the hell? How did I not know that? But that feels really exciting, too, because when I think of Wisconsin, I think of white people and I think a straight people. Like, it just does not feel like an inclusive environment.Maybe this is our chance to sort of shift the momentum in terms of being a more inclusive state for everybody, especially if Im looking at it through the lens of a public school teacher, which pretty much informs everything I do. I feel super obligated to be protective of students, and I think our LGBTQ+ population of students really need some extra love and protection right now. You mentioned the big slate of LGBTQ+ candidates. Two of those are Tammy Baldwin, whos in a very tight race with her Trump-endorsed opponent Eric Hovde, and U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan. What example do you take from them?Tammy Baldwin and Mark Pocan, I have always had great admiration for the two of them. I just think theyre like genuine, stand-up human beings in general. Its really hard to see whats going on in the media with the two of them in Wisconsin, just being inundated with negativity. I know its that way for everybody right now, but holy cow.Ive been doing doors with people who are undecided voters, and I came across a 91-year-old woman. Im like, Hey, Margaret, how you doing? Im here to talk to you about the election. She was like, I already voted. I voted for Donald Trump. Thats when I should have just been like, Okay, bye. But I asked her, Why did you vote for Donald Trump? And she unpacked her reasons, but I started asking her, Okay, well, lets talk about down ticket. What about Tammy Baldwin? And she was like, Oh, yeah, I voted for Tammy Baldwin. And I was like, What? Okay, help me to understand that? She was like, Tammy Baldwin is amazing. She does her work, she talks to people. Shes all over the state, connecting with constituents. Theres no reason that I wouldnt have voted for her. Its just like, thats Tammy Baldwin. Shes really good at connecting with people where theyre at.Your district is a few miles south of Milwaukee, host for the Republican National Convention in July. Donald Trump described it as a horrible city, infested with crime, and then declared, I love Milwaukee after it went public. How does that episode describe Trump and how will it affect his prospects in Wisconsin in the election?I mean, I just think that were watching like a human being that is in complete decline. I dont know. It feels as though, based upon observations, that he is in some sort of state of dementia. That being said, like, I dont want to make light of that. It is going to be a razor-thin margin in Wisconsin, which is why Im spending all of my free time knocking on doors and talking to people. There are still people who I encounter on the doors who say, I dont know, its going to be a game-time call, which is alarming. But I think the effect that Donald Trump has had with his rhetoric, its a constant vomitous stream of lies and disinformation and misinformation. This is why I have to knock on doors and talk to people about whats really going on, because if you leave it for them to sort it out on their own, with whats on TV or social media, I can understand why people are so confused. You posted a selfie with vice presidential nominee Tim Walz a few days ago. How was the event, and did you have a chance to talk policy with him? Also, do you agree with Tucker Carlson that Walz might be gay and living a lie and pulling one over on his family and the American public?I had not heard what Tucker Carlson said. Sometimes its good to just be out on doors constantly. Yes, it was an incredible event. It was standing-room only, and it was really inspiring. He was lovely, we shook hands. He said, Youre a public school teacher. Thank you for your service. This must be a late night for you. I mean, it was like 7 p.m. or something. And I was like, It is getting late, sir.I dont even know what to say about Tucker Carlson, except the obsession that conservative men have with the LGBTQ community, and women for that matter I find it really disturbing. Like, what is his objective in making such an accusation? They have a bizarre obsession with controlling the aspects of other peoples lives in amazingly minute detail. Its just weird Tim Walz thing. Its weird. What can you share about your partner? Weve been together going on three years. Shes a photographer. She lives in my building. We accidentally met in the elevator, which is like so rom-com, right? Like, as I was bringing my groceries up because I never ride the elevator we just happened to converge that one day. We both have our own separate units and Ive got people asking, Are you ever gonna move in together? And were like, Why ruin a good thing if you dont have to?You list climate as one of your legislative priorities. Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis?Oh, good Lord. I mean, popular answer, but we need to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels, I think is a good starting point.Would you support mandatory national service for young people in the military or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America.I do believe public service is important. Its a way to more deeply connect with the community that you live in. I mean, mandatory? I think its something that could be built into curriculum at a certain age. But yeah, thats an interesting question. What are you most looking forward to as the new state rep for Wisconsin District 62?Im most looking forward to challenging the existing norms in the State House. Like, Im a brown queer woman, the first ever from the city of Racine, and just sort of challenging peoples perceptions of what that means and working with people to get some really positive things done, for not just Racine, but for people across the state.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Luke Evans reveals horrible childhood bullying he faced as a gay Jehovas Witness
In his forthcoming memoir, out actor Luke Evans describe being bullied for being gay before he even understood his own sexuality. What hurt the most was being pushed away, the Welsh actor told The Guardian in a recent interview. Somebody not wanting to sit next to me in class. At break time, not having anyone to hang out with or being safe in a crowd or gang. I didnt have one. Related Out actor Luke Evans addresses rumors he could play a gay James Bond The out actor is just one of several non-white, non-straight, non-male names that fans would like to see cast as 007. Its a terrible thing for a child to have to think, whats wrong with me? Evans said. I felt like I was dirty, like I had a disease. I had to keep analyzing what it was about me that was making them do this: Was it my voice? Was it that I was slightly effeminate? Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The U.K. outlet also recently published an excerpt from Evanss memoir, Boy From the Valleys: My Unexpected Journey, out November 7 in the U.K. and expected in the U.S. in February. In it, the Hobbit star writes about his upbringing in a loving but devout family of Jehovahs Witnesses, and the anti-LGBTQ+ messages he absorbed as a child. He recalls a childrens picture book depicting the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It gradually dawned on me that those poor people in my picture book were dying a horrible death simply because they were gay, he writes. God clearly considered that to be enough of a reason to burn them alive. And if you were a kid who was perhaps beginning to realize that you were different from other boys Well, that picture was more than enough to make you keep quiet about it.Evans writes that his first inkling that he might be gay came at age eight, when his class had an attractive substitute teacher. He was handsome and sharply dressed; all the girls fancied him, and all the boys wanted to be him, Evans writes. I remember staring at him, muscles busting out of his shirt, and thinking: wow. Even then, I knew I was looking at him in a different way from the other boys.He also writes about the bullying he experienced both for his religion and for being perceived as gay, and the conflict it inspired in him from a young age. The worst nickname was Jovey Bender, because it combined two aspects of my identity that could never be reconciled, Evans explains in the excerpt. It wasnt possible to be a Jovey and a Bender because being gay was strictly forbidden by the religion. And so began a tormented tug of war in my head that would go on throughout all my years at school. So many LGBTQ+ people can relate to Evans when he writes that he hated school due to the bullying. Children can be horribly intolerant; evil little bastards some of them. Anything slightly different about you and youre a target and I was different in almost every way possible. Its so painful, he writes of being shunned by his peers as a student, and it stays with you.He also strikes an all too familiar note when he writes that he believes his mother would have stepped in had she known about the bullying, but shame made him keep silent. I couldnt tell my parents because I was too ashamed of the names I was being called, he says. But, he writes that he came to understand that it wasnt methat was the problem, it was the bullies.Throughout my childhood, whenever bad stuff happened, there was a refrain going through my head: this is only temporary, he recalls. Even at a young age, Ihad this clear-eyed view. Once school was over, Iknew my life would begin.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

How I overcame the trauma of being bullied as a child
I dedicate this commentary to my lifelong friend and comrade, Lawrence (Larry) J. Magid, who has been there for himself and who has always been there for me.Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me. This was one of the biggest lies our culture taught us growing up. Another myth states that bullying is simply a sign of a youthful rite of passage, that boys will be boys and girls will be girls, and that bullying will toughen people up to better withstand lifes demands. Related How to know if you are non-binary If you identify as neither male nor female, you might be wondering if you are non-binary. Click through to learn more about what it means to be NB. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today In a longitudinal study conducted by Boston Childrens Hospital and published in the February 17, 2014 issue ofPediatrics, Peer Victimization in Fifth Grade and Health in Tenth Grade, researchers confirmed that the longer a young person is bullied, the more severe and lasting the impact on that persons health.I did not have to wait for the study to understand the long-term consequences of bullying very well. For most of my years in school, I was continually attacked and beaten by my peers who perceived me as someone who was different.Names like queer, little girl, and f** rained down upon me like the big red dodgeball my classmates furiously and sadistically hurled at one another on the schoolyard. I would not or rather, could not conform to expressions of the gender roles that my family and peers so clearly expected me to follow, and I regularly paid the price. This kind of bullying and policing of my gender started the very first day I entered kindergarten. In 1952, I attended public school in Bronxville, New York. As my mother dropped me off and kissed me goodbye on the cheek, I felt completely alone and began to cry. My new teacher walked up to me and said, in a somewhat detached tone of voice, Dont cry. Only sissies and little girls cry. Some of the other boys overheard her, and quickly began mocking me. The little girl wants her mommy, one said. What a sissy, said another. Without a word, the teacher simply walked away. I went into the coatroom and cried, huddling in a corner by myself, until she found me.Not knowing what else to do at this time with what they considered as my gender nonconformity, my parents sent me to a child psychologist at the age of four until my 13thbirthday because they feared that I might be gay (or to use the terminology of the day, homosexual), and because they were afraid for my safety. There was a basic routine in the therapy sessions. My mother took me out of school every Monday and Thursday at 11:00 a.m. to the psychologists office. I walked in, took off my coat, and put it on the hook behind the door. The psychologist then asked me if there was anything in particular I wanted to discuss. I invariably said no. Since I did not understand why I was there in the first place, I surely did not trust him enough to talk candidly. When I was less than forthcoming in our conversations (which was on most occasions), he took down from the shelf a model airplane, or a boat, or a truck, and we spent the remainder of the hour assembling the pieces with glue. In private sessions with my parents, he told them that he wanted me to concentrate on behaviors and activities associated with males, while of course avoiding those associated with females. He instructed my parents to assign me the household tasks of taking out the garbage, mowing the lawn (even though we initially lived in an apartment building and we did not have a lawn), and not washing or drying the dishes. He also told my parents to prevent me from playing with dolls or to cook. And as if this all was not enough he advised my parents to sign me up for a little league baseball league, which despite my hatred of the sport, my father basically forced me to join for two summers. When you wave, my father sternly warned one afternoon on the front steps of our apartment building when I was eight years old, you must move your whole hand at the same time. Dont just move the fingers up and down like youre doing. He grabbed my arm, and despite my free-flowing tears and cheeks red with shame, he vigorously demonstrated the proper hand wave for a man. Then, as if anticipating the scene in the filmLa Cage Aux Folles(and the U.S. remakeThe Birdcage), my father took me into the backyard and forced me to walk and run like men are supposed to move their bodies. Obviously, I had previously been doing something wrong. Of course, the other children pick on you, he blamed. Youdoact like a girl. I was humiliated.Despite this, I developed what would become a lifelong appreciation of music and art. When I was in the fifth grade of my elementary school in Van Nuys, California, I auditioned for the school chorus, and the music teacher accepted me along with only a handful of boys and about 50 girls. The scarcity of boys in the chorus was not due to any gender imbalance in the quality of boys singing voices. The determining factor was one of social pressure. I and the other few boys in the chorus were generally disliked by our peers. In fact, most of the other boys in our class picked on us, and labeled us the chorus girls, the f**s, the sissies, and the fairies. The girls, on the other hand, who made it into the chorus were well respected and even envied by the other girls.I can see now that this all amounted to an insidious and dehumanizing fear and hatred of anything even hinting at femininity in males. This is, of course, a thinly veiled misogyny, and it nearly succeeded in taking my life.Looking into the bathroom mirror, my 14-year-old self stared back at me, tears rolling down into the sink below. All I could envision was the continual and relentless attacks: boys flicking my ears from behind me when we were aboard the school bus, girls loudly giggling as I walked by, peers isolating me on the school yard keeping me from playing games or joining them for lunch, students flinging food at me from multiple corners of the lunchroom, boys waiting for me with constant blows to my stomach and face when teachers werent looking. I dont remember where, but I learned that if I took more than the recommended dosage of aspirin tablets, I could develop serious internal bleeding and die. Seeing no way out, I opened the bathroom medicine cabinet turning my 14-year-old reflection away. Reaching inside, I grabbed the 1,000-count aspirin bottle, and with hands shaking, soundlessly twisted off the cap so as not to arouse suspicion from my family just beyond the door. Then with seeming effortlessness, I poured a handful of pills as if I were pouring sugar from a shaker. With little hesitation, I lifted my clenched hand toward my mouth and tossed the white pills into my mouth, choking and gagging as they hit my throat. Their bitterness, though, forced me to vomit them into the sink.Though I was angry at myself for not having the stomach to kill myself, I was also relieved because I suppose at least a part of me still wished to live. All things considered, my life turned out fairly well. I entered college in 1965, at a time when our society underwent dynamic changes. I joined with others to demonstrate our opposition to the war in Vietnam; I worked with students of color in our common struggle against housing discrimination around our campus, and I helped plan ecology workshops to highlight the state of our increasingly polluted planet. I chose to join a therapy group in my college counseling center, which gave me the support to come out as gay. I later went on to become a teacher for children with disabilities, a journalist, and a tenured university professor. I now define myself as agender. As I am writing this today at age 77, I consider myself not as a victim, but rather as a survivor of the bullying and abuse from those earlier times. When my therapist diagnosed me having post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)r, along with social anxiety disorder, moderate agoraphobia, and clinical depression over 30 years ago, I was actually relieved, for then I could begin to let go of the self-blame I had carried for so long.Today, I often hear Steven Sondheims song, Anyone Can Whistle, in my minds ear, a Broadway show tune about a person who has accomplished many difficult tasks like speaking Greek, dancing the tango, even slaying a dragon but who seems incapable of managing simple things like whistling. Anyone can whistle, thats what they say easy.Anyone can whistle, any old day easy. Its all so simple.Relax, let go, let fly.So someone tell me, why cant I?In my life, I earned numerous degrees including a doctorate, and I published several books and peer-reviewed journal articles. I have been asked to speak throughout the United States and around the world on varied topics focusing on issues of social justice, and I have been given a wonderful opportunity to travel to places I only dreamt about when I was younger.I have come to understand full well, though, and I have come to accept my severe limitations due to the bullying I endured and the damage I suffered from those earlier times. Sondheims whistling stands as an analogy for relationships. Though I have attempted to develop long-term romantic relationships along my way, I have come to understand the harm to my emotional self. I have lived alone since 1977 following a series of tries at sharing residences with trusted roommates, though none of these living arrangements worked for me.In truth, sticks, stones, andnames can damage the body as well as the spirit, and they all can kill. Fortunately, schools have at least begun to leave the myths and lies behind, and take action. Most notably, we are witnessing more schools conducting programs to empower the so-called bystanders those who know of the bullying, but often feel powerless to step in transforming them into active upstanders by intervening to stop the abuse. With knowledge, understanding, and interventions, young people are now leading the way to a better future. So Maybe you could show me how to let go,Lower my guard,Learn to be free.Maybe if you whistle,Whistle for me..I was honored by my friend Larry Magid to write The Parent, Educator, and Youth Guide to LGBTQ Cyberbullying for his important life-saving websiteConnectSafely.Thesite generallyand the guide specifically are dedicated to educating users of connected technology about safety, privacy and security. Would a Harris-Walz win get us closer to an out LGBTQ+ Supreme Court judge?
Four years ago, when then-Mayor Pete Buttigieg became the first openly LGBTQ+ presidential candidate from a major political party to win delegates, many imagined the real possibility of a queer top executive for the first time. But perhaps the next major milestone in LGBTQ+ representation will occur in a different branch of government the judiciary. Is it likely that a President Kamala Harris would nominate an LGBTQ+ person to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of the United States in the next four years? Should this be a priority if she wins the election?Marc Stein, professor of history at San Francisco State University, isnt holding his breath. But the author of Queer Public History: Essays on Scholarly Activism, Sexual Injustice: Supreme Court Decisions from Griswold to Roe and other works did call it possible. And he was willing to speculate, name names, and predict that Buttigieg could soon be appointed to a higher status Cabinet position, like Homeland Security or U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Related Tammy Baldwin: Electing Kamala Harris means saving the Supreme Court The lesbian senator spoke with LGBTQ Nation about why this election could affect Americans for decades to come. I would first say that there probably have been LGBTQ Supreme Court justices previously, Stein told LGBTQ Nation, and there are definitely claims about a justice who served in the 1940s, Frank Murphy, that he was likely gay. Now, not openly gay. So obviously, thats a really important difference. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Anya Lynn-Alesker (they/she), executive director of the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association and Foundation, says its important to have LGBTQ+ representation in the judiciary. Its important to note that no LGBTQ+ person has ever served on many federal courts, including nine out of 13 federal appeals courts and over 80% of federal district courts, with most states having never had an out LGBTQ+ federal judge. The real importance is that Americans, including LGBTQ+Americans, deserve to have federal courts that reflect the communities that they serve. And it is the bars belief that having diverse perspectives broadly makes the bench stronger and leads to better judgments, Lynn-Alesker told LGBTQ Nation.Today, despite over 7.6 or so percent of adult Americans identifying as LGBTQ+, only 3 percent of active federal circuit and district court judges are openly LGBTQ+, Lynn-Alesker added. The real importance is that Americans, including LGBTQ+Americans, deserve to have federal courts that reflect the communities that they serve.Anya Lynn-Alesker, Executive Director, National LGBTQ+ Bar Association and FoundationComplicating the question is whether Harris would want to appoint a justice from another underrepresented group, such as Native American or Asian American Pacific Islander populations. But on the basic issue of whether Harris would have an interest and a commitment in nominating an LGBTQ+ judge or other legal professional, I would think just having a sense of her politics that she would be open to doing that, Stein said. She would consider doing that. She would likely be looking for various LGBTQ appointments that she could make. But whether thats going to be a Supreme Court justice, it really depends on all these other factors. In the past few decades, key Supreme Court decisions have rapidly extended LGBTQ+ rights by decriminalizing same-sex conduct (Lawrence v. Texas), recognizing marriage equality at the federal level (United States v. Windsor), legalizing it nationwide (Obergefell v. Hodges), and protecting LGBTQ+ employees from workplace discrimination (Bostock v. Clayton County). This fall, the Supreme Court will decide on the case United States v. Skrmetti, which will have far-reaching implications for transgender rights.Yet aside from the highest court, greater representation of the LGBTQ+ community is needed in lower courts, too. For practical purposes, confirming queer judges at the federal level is one way to counteract the effects of the nearly 40 percent of Trumps confirmed federal appellate judges who have a demonstrated record of anti-LGBTQ+ bias.Jack Gruber-USA TODAY Dec 18, 2023; Washington, DC, USA; Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff paying respects to retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor lying in repose at the United States Supreme Court. OConnor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, died on Dec. 1, 2023. | Jack Gruber-USA TODAY The impact of lifetime judiciary appointmentsLambda Legal issued an updated report that details the deeds of 19 judges who were confirmed for lifetime appointments during Trumps tenure. Of 34 judicial nominees that Lambda Legal opposed, 30 were confirmed by the Senate. Among the lowlights:In 2022, Judge Lawrence VanDykeof the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that beauty pageants may exclude transgender women based on a pageants free speech rights. In the Northern District of Texas, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk is an ultra-conservative who ruled in 2022 that the sex discrimination ban in the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit discrimination based on sexuality or gender identity. In 2020, Judge Kyle Duncan of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals (also known as the Hobby Lobby Lawyer) refused to call a transgender petitioner by her correct name and pronouns despite her written appeals. These lifetime appointments mean decades of repercussions. And while President Joe Biden recently made history with a record 12 openly LGBTQ+ judges confirmed to the federal bench, the queer community is still sadly lagging in representation at that level. As of October 1, there were 66 judicial vacancies, notes Lambda Legal. At the same time, theres no telling how any justice will rule, regardless of membership in an underrepresented group. Look no further than Justice Clarence Thomas. But one impediment to nominating an LGBTQ+ Supreme Court justice is the lack of LGBTQ+ judges on lower courts. Today, eight of nine Supreme Court justices were selected from federal Circuit Courts of Appeals. While justices have also come from other courts and other professions at the time of nomination, the fact remains that currently, out of 870 authorized total Article III judgeships, only 24 or less than 3% are out LGBTQ+ lifetime judges on the federal courts. So, if a president is looking around at the Court of Appeals as the most likely place, then it becomes important that there are just five [LGBTQ+ judges] to choose from, Stein said. And of those five, one was appointed by Obama, one by Trump, and then three by Biden. It wasnt until 1994 that an openly LGBTQ+ judge was confirmed as a lifetime federal judge at any level in the U.S. Judge Deborah Batts remained the only out queer judge for 17 years until President Barack Obama nominated Judge J. Paul Oetken, a former Clinton administration lawyer. Certainly, history will remember Judge Vaughn Walker, who came out publicly after he served and ultimately ended up ruling that Californias Proposition 8 (which banned marriage equality in the state) was unconstitutional. Not only are the federal courts lacking queer judges generally, but its also worth noting that an openly transgender or nonbinary person has never been nominated or confirmed to serve as a lifetime federal judge. Also conspicuously absent are any openly bisexual, intersex, or HIV-positive federal court judges.Megan Smith-USA TODAY Apr 8, 2022; Washington, DC, USA; Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson delivers remarks with President Joe Biden, left, and Vice President Kamala Harris, right, after the Senates confirmation of Judge Jackson to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on the South Lawn of The White House. | Megan Smith-USA TODAY How the Senate could impact appointing the next Supreme Court justice The Senate could also be another barrier to Harris nominating an LGBTQ+ Supreme Court justice. To even contemplate an LGBTQ+ justice, Stein pointed out that the makeup of the Senate will be critical because if, say, [Vice President] Kamala [Harris] wins, but Republicans control the Senate, that really limits who she can choose and makes it much more likely that she will appoint more middle-of-the-road, less groundbreaking justices, Stein said. Currently, the battle for control of the Senate remains highly competitive as Election Day approaches. The LGBTQ+ Bar believes its critical that judges of all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ judges, also serve on state and local benches to bolster public confidence in the judiciary.Through tailored programming and official letters of support for LGBTQ+ prospective judges seeking appointment, the LGBTQ+ Bar hopes to inspire more LGBTQ+ legal professionals to join the bench, fostering a judiciary that best reflects the communities it serves at all levels, including state and local courts, said Mari Nemec, Policy Counsel for the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association and Foundation.Federal courts have wide-reaching effects on Americans, but state court judges often make determinations that impact peoples daily lives. Moreover, judges with diverse backgrounds including LGBTQ+ judges bring their unique perspectives and empathy with them to the bench.Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Kamala Harris, listen as Christine Blasey Ford testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the assault then judicial-nominee Brett Kavanaugh allegedly perpetrated | Pool photo by Tom WilliamsPool photo by Tom Williams | Pool photo by Tom Williams Judge Amanda Shelton, elected in 2022, is a judge in the family division of Oakland County Circuit Court in Oakland County, Michigan, where state judges and justices are selected in nonpartisan elections, unlike some states that have bipartisan elections, appointments, or a combination.Reflecting on the experience, Shelton said having the chance to run for an open seat was an advantage because she didnt think shed be a judge today if she needed to be appointed. As a matter of fact, Shelton applied and was passed over for several appointments before an opportunity to launch a campaign arose. When these opportunities would come up, I would throw my hat in the ring for the appointment, Shelton told LGBTQ Nation. But you know, as things shook out, that wasnt my path. So, Im very grateful that thats not the only path available because I was able to create and run a campaign. You know, Ive always said people might be able to outraise me on money, but one thing you cannot do is outwork me. With nearly 20 years of practicing law, Shelton had both professional and personal reasons for seeking a judgeship.Part of it really was about representation, Shelton said. I looked around and said, Is the bench really reflective of the communities that we live in? No. Is it a job I think I could do and do well? Yes, and I like a challenge.Yet Sheltons experience as a legal professional is also shaped by her lived experience. Because of the legal gymnastics and circuitous route required for Shelton and her wife to marry and become equal parents in the eyes of the law, Shelton has a unique viewpoint, and with that comes a great deal of empathy. I can meet almost anybody where they are that walks through the door, Shelton said.It is intimidating to come to court even if its on Zoom, Shelton said, and that her job is to lower the temperature to better help people fix the problems that brought them to court in the first place. I think if you have that approach as someone who is supposed to resolve problems in an empathetic way, I think that makes you a good judge. And I think that the people we serve can leave there and not feel victimized and worse than when they came in.Both Shelton and Stein acknowledge that while bringing greater diversity to the bench can only benefit society, accusations of judicial bias will occur. That was the fate of Judge Walker, who came out publicly after he struck down Californias Prop 8, which banned marriage equality. Unfortunately, one negative aspect of this is that judges and justices are vulnerable to accusations of bias or prejudice if they represent communities whose rights or whose issues are being adjudicated, Stein said. Now, thats completely unfair because we rarely hear, say, white Christian male straight judges or justices accused of bias or prejudice when their interests or agendas might be implicated.Shelton said that when an LGBTQ+ judge has an LGBTQ+ issue in front of them, its easy for people to play identity politics and make accusations. But at the end of the day, the law is the law whether we like it or not, Shelton said. It is not our role as judges to make the law. Our job is to apply it. Apply the law to the facts. Now, of course, theres always room for interpretation. And thats why you want somebody with the judicial temperament that you think is appropriate for the job.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Anti-LGBTQ+ attacks nationwide have increased 112% over the last two years
There has been a 112% increase in documented attacks on LGBTQ+ people nationwide, according to a newly unveiled Anti-LGBTQ Extremism Reporting Tracker (ALERT) from the queer media watchdog organization GLAAD. GLAAD hopes to use the tracker to provide comprehensive reporting and analysis detailing anti-LGBTQ+ hate in the U.S. and the specific communities and targets affected by it.ALERT recorded 524 such incidents between June 2022 and 2023 and 1,109 incidents from June 2023 to 2024. These attacks have included over 450 protests, 330 propaganda drops, 320 acts of vandalism, 200 bomb & mass shooting threats, 130 assaults, and 45 cases of arson that have resulted in at least 161 injuries and 21 deaths, GLAADs ALERT Desk reported. Related These 4 trans-related Supreme Court cases affect everyones future civil rights While the cases focus on drag bans and trans protections, they address larger issues of free speech and civil rights. The attacks have also included over 567 attacks on transgender and gender non-conforming people, 360 incidents targeting educational institutions and libraries, 325 incidents targeting Pride flags and other LGBTQ+ community symbols, 160 protests and violent threats against drag performers, and 140 incidents targeting health care providers of gender-affirming care and their patients. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The tracker, which will be updated quarterly, includes data on criminal and non-criminal acts of hate from sources like news media, partner organizations (like the Human Rights Campaign or Anti-Defamtion Leagues Center on Extremism), right-wing forums on social media sites like Gab or chat apps like Telegram as well as incident reports submitted via GLAADs website. All documented incidents must occur against groups or individuals within the U.S. and must include harassment, threats, or actual violence specifically targeting LGBTQ+ people.GLAADs ALERT team will verify the validity of each incident to maintain credibility, remove duplicates, and exclude spam and trolling, the organization said. The ALERT Desk tells a story not entirely captured by the FBIs hate crime statistics because many of these incidents, like protests at Pride events, dont meet the criteria necessary to bring legal charges [and] arent included in most official hate crime counts, GLAAD wrote in its recently released report on ALERTs findings. However, we must recognize that the impact of these acts on local LGBTQ communities is felt regardless of whether or not the incident is prosecuted. We must recognize that the impact of these acts on local LGBTQ communities is felt regardless of whether or not the incident is prosecuted.GLAADs 2024 report on ALERTs findingsDuring a press call, Barbara Simon, senior director of news and campaigns at GLAAD, noted that ALERT seeks to contextualize anti-LGBTQ+ incidents to help media and other experts understand larger systems of violence.[Recently], there was a bomb threat against a library in Massachusetts, Simon said, a threat against a Drag Queen Story Hour at the public library in Somerville. But its not just about that library. Its not just about the inclusive materials and programs they had, about how the bomb squad had to come in and sweep the library, how children and families and patrons had to evacuate the library. Our data shows how that incident is connected to the bigger picture, which is more of a broad-based, systemic attack against LGBTQ people, our visibility, our equality and our allies, Simon added. It is one of 365 attacks nationwide against drag artisan events. Its one of 63 anti-LGBTQ attacks in Massachusetts alone, one of 15 attacks specifically against drag in Massachusetts. The quarterly reports will also include stories from those affected by the incidents.GLAAD A bar graph showing anti-LGBTQ+ hate incidents from GLAADs ALERT Desk. | GLAAD For example, Dr. Jack Turban, pediatric psychiatrist and director of the gender psychiatry program at the University of California in San Francisco, said during the press call that bans on gender-affirming care for youth in 26 states have worsened the mental health of his young trans patients even though they live in a state where such health care is protected. Their mental health has been worsened, Turban said, because of an increase in anti-trans rhetoric nationwide whose indirect effects cross state lines.Kids are hearing things like being trans is a mental illness, or being trans is bad, or you shouldnt be allowed to use the bathroom that aligns with your gender identity because trans people are sexual assaulters, or you shouldnt be allowed to play on sports teams with your friends because youre going to physically hurt them, Turban said. My patients know that none of those things are true, right? They can know that, but if youre hearing it every single day, all over social media and all over the news and now right in their communities, even its impossible to not be impacted by that.GLAAD pointed out that media coverage tends to falsely frame medical care for transgender people as a debate despite every major medical association supporting the care. This coverage compounds the effect of hateful rhetoric from anti-trans politicians, protestors, and pundits.Shutterstock Salina EsTitties attends the 35th Annual GLAAD Awards on March 14, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California. | Shutterstock The hateful rhetoric affects even LGBTQ+ celebrities and their fans, like Salina EsTitties, a competitor who appeared in Season 15 of RuPauls Drag Race. EsTitties told the press call that shes generally insulated from hatred against gender non-conforming people since she lives in the very gay city of West Hollywood, California. However, she sees its impact whenever she travels to other states or posts social media videos about LGBTQ+ issues.Theres comments every single day of people being like, This is not what God created. God created two genders. Oh, they keep adding alphabets. Oh, just shoot it between the eyes and get rid of it,' EsTitties said. The online hate is insane and theres so much of it, and people are so willing to just let it all out, but its a clear representation of how people actually feel in America and across, you know, the U.S. here. Not only are our LGBT community dealing with having to be their authentic selves, she continued. Being their authentic selves with just who they are outside of their queer identity is a lot to navigate, and its not easy, especially when people are telling you, Youre the Devil, youre a demon, or Its not acceptable to be that.'Hate crimes typically increase during presidential election years. Marie Cottrell, executive director for the New Jersey-based LGBTQ+ advocacy center Out Montclair, said she hopes that increased awareness of anti-LGBTQ+ hate incidents will empower communities to build intersectional coalitions between other demographic groups whose members are targeted by similar hate.I think that its really important that you be the person that the community needs, Cottrell told the press call. They need to see you stand for and with them. Find folks who in your community who will stand with you in the face of intolerance, build a community of support within your township whether thats forging a relationship with your LGBTQ liaison within the local police department working with the township, the mayor, the town council, and really having open conversations having conversations that address really hard questions and topics and that starts the process of understanding and healing in your community. Its a small step, but its a step forward and a step forward in helping others understand the community, she said.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

The consequences of huge federal cuts to domestic violence funding may be death
This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission.Paris Alexander hadbeen in a destructive relationship for over a decade, learning to tolerate the intolerable even as the abuse progressedfirst mental and emotional torment, then physical and sexual torture. Like many survivors, Alexander, who is nonbinary, stayed in the relationship hoping that it would improve. We stick it out, they said, because we think that theyre going to change and come to their senses. Then, one day in September 2020, Alexanders male partner beat them up and dragged them outside their Providence, Rhode Island, home by their hair. Wandering their neighborhood, covered in blood and desperate to flee, Alexander felt haunted by the years of forced isolation: I had nowhere to go, no one to turn to, they recall. A Google search on their phone led them toSojourner House, which runs the states only shelter specifically for LGBTQ victims of intimate partner violence. Almost miraculously, there was some space. Finally, Alexander had caught a break. Related Suit over gender dysphoria could dismantle new disability rules Texas and its GOP allies are utilizing LGBTQ issues as a wedge, civil rights advocates warn. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today At the shelter, known as RISE, Alexander focused on taking baby steps toward independence. They got a library card. They started individual therapy. They joined a weekly virtual LGBTQ support group, where they heard terms like nonbinary, gender-queer, and gender fluid for the first time. Back then, Alexander identified as a transgender woman and felt pressured to look female as much as possible. The support group taught them, You dont have to be [male or female]you can just simply be who you are, and thats okay.RISE isone of three sheltersoperated by Sojourner House, named for the 19th-century slave-turned-abolitionistSojourner Truth, who was also an ardent advocate for womens rights. Since itsfoundingin 1976,the organization has served more than 60,000 people1,800 last year alone. A small but critical part ofthis past years $7.4 million budget comes from the federalCrime Victims Fund, a pot of money created by the 1984 Victims of Crime Act, also known as VOCA. Across the country, VOCA helps pay for the hotlines survivors call in crisis, the shelters they flee to, and the advocates who accompany them to court and help them heal.VOCA-supported programs helped almost 8 million people in fiscal year 20222023, funding nearly 3 million shelter beds and 2.3 million crisis-hotline calls, according tothe Department of Justice. Those services have become more critical since the pandemic, as rates of intimate partner violence have soared, a housing crisis has made it even harder for survivors to flee, andthe overturning ofRoe v. Wadehas given abusersanother way to threaten pregnant survivors. But even as the need is growing, VOCA funding has been plummetingand Congress has failed to act on what many advocates say may be the best hope for a legislative fix. The current funding crisis is rooted in changes in DOJ policy that date back years. The Crime Victims Fund gets most of its money from financial penalties levied in corporate criminal cases, according to the department. Those fees and fines have been falling as federal prosecutors havepursuedmore deferred and non-prosecution agreements, which allow defendantsmore time to pay up or avoid charges entirely if they cooperate with the government. As a result, deposits into the potshrankfrom a high of $6.6 billion in 2017 to $1.39 billion in fiscal year 2023. (Because of congressional caps, the actual amount of moneydisbursedis even lower.) These declines have trickled down to state agencieswhich receive VOCA funds based on their states population sizeand then to eligible programs. Rhode Island, which has one of the smallest populations, has seen a 54 percent drop in VOCA funds since 2017, to $2.9 million in the last fiscal year.California, the most populous state, went from receiving $218.9 million in VOCA funds in 2017 to $87 million over the same period. Most states, including California, have managed to come up with some funding to offset the federal cuts, but the money is mostly temporarylasting a year or two max. Fourteen states, including Rhode Island, did not appropriate any money in their most recent budgets to offset the VOCA cuts, I found in my reporting. This past spring, Rhode Island lawmakers proposed $2 million in supplemental funding, but the bill died in committee.Ive spent four months trying to understand how these extreme VOCA cuts are affecting domestic violence programs across the United States, doing more than two dozen interviews and tracking down budget data from every state. The picture that has emerged is deeply troubling: Lifesaving services for survivors are struggling to stay afloat, and experts fear what might happen if a long-term funding solution isnt found. Law enforcement groups are equally worried.Without Congressional action, victim service providers will be forced to cut critical services, and many will be forced to close, more than 700 prosecutorswrote in an open letter to lawmakers in February. Millions of victims, including abused children and battered women, will be left without access to safety, justice and healing. But with the November elections looming, Congress attention has been focused elsewhere.TheVOCA Fix Act,which President Biden signed into law in 2021,diverted revenue from deferred and non-prosecution agreements to the Crime Victims Fundbut this turned out to beinadequate. This term, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have proposed a bill tosupplement VOCA with fundscollected through the False Claims Act, whichpenalizesdefrauding of the government. The legislation has attracted 170 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House butlanguishedin the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Durbin chairs. A spokesperson for Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the committees highest-ranking Republican, did not respond to questions about whether the bill willget a hearing. Congress has also punted onBidens proposal for a $7.3 billion infusion into the Crime Victims Fund for next year. (The White House did not respond to repeated requests for comment.)Victims of crime, and specifically, victims of domestic and sexual violence, just are not priorities.Vanessa Volz, Sojourner Houses president and CEOAt a virtual event this week commemorating the 40th anniversary of VOCA, the mood was less than celebratory. Im hearing about programs shutting down, positions being cut, victim services being impacted, ClairePonder Selib, executive director of the National Organization for Victim Advocacy, told more than 250 attendees. To Vanessa Volz, Sojourner Houses president and CEO, the funding crisis illuminates a harsh reality: Victims of crime, and specifically, victims of domestic and sexual violence, just are not priorities.Shutterstock | Shutterstock Domestic violence hotlineslike theone that led Paris Alexander to Sojourner House are among the most critical services that VOCA funds. Because hotlines are the point of entry to a support system that can mean the difference between life and death, slashed budgets can be especially disastrous. Rhode Islands statewide24/7 helplinehas historically relied almost entirely on VOCA fundingabout $118,000 last year, less than half what it received in 2019. More cuts would likely hit the helplines overnight shifts hardest. For people who are abused in the dead of night, or who have a small window to seek help while their abusers are sleeping or working, thiscould be catastrophic. The Rhode Island helpline routinely gets calls from people in Massachusetts and Connecticut who cant access services in their own areaseven though both of those states, unlike Rhode Island, have appropriated supplemental funds to offset VOCA cuts. Connecticuts additional money came from the pandemic-era American Rescue Plan Act, which disappears at the end of this year. Without a new infusion of money, the statewide domestic violence hotline,Safe Connectwhich is 100 percent funded by VOCAwill have to drastically cut services, lay off advocates, or even shut down, says Meghan Scanlon, president and CEO of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which staffs the hotline. The reality is, as much as we are advocates who dont want to say no, at some point, were gonna have to, she laments. And that doesnt feel great. Some of the greatest effects are likely to be felt in programs that serve transgender clients and undocumented immigrants, such as Sojourner Houses RISE shelter and THEIA Project, which supportsvictims of human trafficking. Hot-button politics around LGBTQ+ and immigrant clienteles make such programs especially difficult to fundraise for, Volz says.Yet as Alexanders story shows, immigrantsurvivors areparticularly vulnerable to abusefrom partners who exploit their status as another form of control. Despite their strong New England accent that makes them sound as if they had been born and raised in Boston, Alexander originally hails from So Miguel, a lush island in the Azores archipelago of Portugal. When they were 5 years old, they arrived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with their parentsbut without documentation. Their mother secured US citizenship when Alexander was a teenagera process thatautomaticallymade them a citizen, too. But after getting kicked out of the house at 16, and no parental contact over the years, Alexander lacked both identification and proof of their citizenship status. I became like a ghost, they recall. In their 20s, they told me, essentially undocumented, they dropped out of cosmetology school and the regular labor force and drifted into sex work.Sojourner House didnt just get Alexander out of an abusive relationship. Its VOCA-funded team ofimmigration advocateshelped Alexander secure identification, represented them in immigration proceedings, and prepped them for their citizenship testa process that took over a year; in March 2022, Alexander was officially sworn in as a US citizen. Were really at risk of not being able to continue providing these services at the same level, Volz notes. In some places, cuts affecting VOCA-funded legal advocacy services have already been devastating. Judge Shelley Santry, a family court judge in Louisville, Kentucky, used to have advocates in her courtroom every Tuesday, the day she hears domestic violence cases involving people seeking emergency protective orders against their abusers. The advocatesemployed by the statewideCenter for Women and Familieswould bring survivors into a private room after their hearing and explain a new set of risks: Once the order is entered, its really the most dangerous time, Santry told me. The perpetrator is losing that control, and thats when the lethality red flags are elevated. Recently in Hardin County, 60 miles from Louisville, a man fatally shothis ex-girlfriend and her mothernear the courthouse where they had a hearing about an emergency protective order against him. (He alsokilled himself.)In Santrys courtroom, the advocates would help survivors come up with practical strategies to safeguard themselves and their families: keep gas in their cars, charge up their phones, pack emergency bags in case they had to flee. Their in-person presence was essential, says Elizabeth Martin, the centers president and CEO: If you arent where people are, theyre not necessarily going to reach out to you.But over time, the number of advocates in Santrys courtroom dwindled, and since August 2021, theyve been completely gone. With VOCA funding for the center plummeting more than 60 percent since 2019, to just over $437,000 last year, Martin was forced to cut her domestic violence staff in half and remove advocates from courtrooms. Now, a court staffer hands out pamphlets and business cards to survivors bearing the centers name, website, and phone number. Martin only sends an advocate if a survivor asks for one. They dont know what they dont know, Martin says. The contact, that personal touch, that involvement has been watered down significantly.Lawmakers need to understand this isnt a personal problem, this isnt afamilyproblemthis isallof our problems, and weve got to work to eradicate it.Elizabeth Martin, president and CEO of Kentuckys Center for Women and FamiliesDomestic violence groups were grateful when Kentucky legislators allocated $7.1 million in their latest budget to offset VOCA cuts, but say the one-time grant isnt enough. Without advocates to provide support, the consequence may be death, Santry says. In 2020, Kentucky ranked 10th in the nation for domestic violence homicides, according to the Violence Policy Center, with men murdering 46 women across the state. Lawmakers need to understand this isnt apersonalproblem, Martin says, this isnt afamilyproblemthis isallof our problems, and weve got to work to eradicate it.Shutterstock An older black woman mournfully looks out her window | Shutterstock California is anotherstate where advocates say lawmakers havent done enough to address a steep decline in VOCA fundsdown 60 percent since fiscal year 2017. Now domestic violence organizations there are facing a new crisis as they grapple with the repercussions of this summersdecisioninGrants Pass v. Johnson, in which the Supreme Courts conservative supermajority essentially greenlit thecriminalization of homelessness. After a months-long advocacy campaign thatdrew the support of actress Angelina Jolie, Gov. Gavin Newsoms office scrounged up $103 million inJune to supplement the $87 million in federal VOCA funds. That one-year reprieve helped to avert what couldhave beena catastrophe for VOCA-funded organizations. But then in July, Newsomorderedstate agencies toclear out homeless encampmentsfollowing theGrants Passruling. Advocateswarnedthat the decision could be devastating for survivors of intimate partner violence, whostruggle to accessshelter and housing nationwideand especially in California, which has thelargestpopulation of unhoused people in the United States. The reality before [Newsoms] executive order was that there were not enough DV-specific shelter beds, and just in general, theres not enough emergency shelter beds, says Jennifer Willover, housing policy analyst at the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. Since Newsoms mandate, Willover adds, domestic violence programs across the state have reported increased calls to their hotlines requesting shelter. In some parts of the state, advocates report that they are spending more time visiting encampments and informing unhoused people of domestic violence-specific services they offer, Willover says. (Newsoms Office of Emergency Services did not respond to requests for comment.)Experts see the situation there as a harbinger of whats to come nationwide: As the National Network to End Domestic Violence and other advocacy groupssaidafter theGrants Passruling, Gender-based violence is a cause and consequence of homelessness, and this ruling will further trap people who are homeless, including survivors, in cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. In areportabout homelessness in the state published in January by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, nearly one-fifth of cisgender women surveyed said they had experienced intimate partner violence in the six months prior to homelessness, and 40 percent said violence was a reason for leaving their last housing. Many were homeless because of the far-reaching effects of domestic abuse: living in isolation from family and friends and unable to work, their financial resources controlled by their abusers, resulted in intractable poor credit and records of eviction. Theres a lack of awareness, still, of the fact that there is that intersection of domestic violence and homelessness, says Leticia Campos, chief programs officer at theMarjaree Mason Center, which serves victims of domestic violence in Fresno County, where thepopulationtops 1 million and thepoverty rate iswell over the national average.Courtesy Marjaree Mason Marjaree Masons drop-in center in Fresno, California, provides counseling and legal advocacy services to survivors in need. | Courtesy Marjaree Mason Marjaree Masonestablished in 1979 andnamed aftera 36-year-old woman murdered by her ex-boyfriend, a sheriffs deputy with the countyoffers a case study of the problems facing VOCA-funded organizations in California postGrants Pass. Fresno County has thehighestnumber of calls to law enforcement for domestic violence per capita in California, and Marjaree Mason is the countys only 24/7 domestic violence shelter and service provider. The Fresno City Councilallocated$300,000 earlier this year to help the organization fend off the impacts of the years-long decline in VOCA funds, but staff members say they still struggle to meet the needs of survivors. In June, I visited the VOCA-funded emergency shelter, which can accommodate 140 people. The rooms have bunk beds with colorful, patterned bedspreads, and televisions mounted on the walls, and outside theres a playground shaded by palm trees. But even before the Supreme Court ruling, getting a bed there wasnt easy. Empty beds are often filled within hours, Campos says; when I visited, the shelter had been at capacity for three weeks. Survivors who are turned away often have no choice but to return to their abusers. A spokesperson told me that last year, 80 percent of the organizations clients had no income of their own, and of the ones who did, two-thirds made under $15,000. After Newsom issued his executive order, the Fresno County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved anordinancemaking unlawful camping a misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine and up to six months in jail. The city of Fresnopassed a banthat waseven more aggressive: a $1,000 fine and a year behind bars, which took effect in late September. The mayor hassaidthat arrests will be limited to habitual offenders and that people will first be offered supportive services, though its unclear whether those include referrals for domestic violence treatment.Staff at Marjaree Mason saw an impact withindays of Newsoms executive order, when the sheriffs office dropped off an unhoused woman and two children at the drop-in center in the middle of the night after clearing an encampment, according to Joseph Hickman, the centers interim crisis response manager. It was very eye-opening to see that it happened that quickly, Hickman says. It definitely kind of lit a fire under us.Courtesy Marjaree Mason At Marjaree Masons emergency shelter, families get their own room. Free beds tend to fill up within hours. | Courtesy Marjaree MasonThe problem, as Campos says, is this: What should we do when were at capacity? Where should we send victims of domestic violence? Laura Moreno, program manager at the Fresno County Department of Social Services, says those questions point to a broader, county-wide issue. We dont have enough shelter beds, period, for the number of people we have on the streets, she told me. A federally mandated one-day census in Fresno and neighboring Madera counties in January 2023foundnearly 4,500 unhoused people, up 7 percent from the year before. A county spokesperson said outreach teams provide homeless people with relevant resources, including information about Marjaree Masons services.Helping survivors find assistance elsewhere when the shelter is full is a task left to Diana Hernandez, a former 911 dispatcher who joined Marjaree Masons staff in September 2021. In her previous job, she told me, she hated having to hang up on callers who were clearly in need but not in the throes of an emergency. Now, as a client navigator, she can talk to survivors who call the hotline for as long as they want, providing them with emotional support and resources. But she cant always give them what they need most, which is usually a bed. While we were chatting in her cubicle in June, she received a hotline call from a woman who said shed been physically assaulted by her boyfriend. She had been living in a car, and needed a safe place to stay. Marjaree Masons shelter was full, so Hernandez offered to call homeless shelters in the area to see if they had room. But she also cautioned that those shelters wouldnt offer advocacy support and legal services specifically for domestic violence victims. Nor would their locations be confidential, like domestic violence shelters are. Add to that, most likely they would require residents to leave during the day; Marjaree Mason lets them stay.Hernandez gave the woman phone numbers for other local organizations that could provide services, and suggested that she change her passwords on her email and social media accounts, make sure her phones location-sharing feature was turned off, and call back on the hotline at any time if she wanted to talk. In such instances, I try to exhaust my resources, Hernandez told me after the call ended, so I know I did everything I could.Shutterstock | Shutterstock After seven monthsat RISE, Sojourner Houses LGBTQ shelter, Paris Alexander might have ended up like so many other survivors of intimate partner violence: homeless and back on the street. But because Alexander had been a victim of sex trafficking, they were eligible for assistance through another Sojourner House program offeringtransitional housing for survivors of human trafficking. The program paid the rent and utilities on a third-floor apartment where Alexander lived while they were sorting through their citizenship problems and unable to work. Without a Social Security number, they couldnt apply for food stamps or government assistance. Every few weeks, Alexander recalls, a Sojourner House advocate showed up with some foodbread, peanut butter, canned beans. And that was pretty much what I had to live off of. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sojourner House (@sojournerri)Alexander finally secured their citizenship in March 2022 and was able to begin searching for permanent housing. Once more, Sojourner House provided vital support. Robin Greene, an advocate who had once been unhoused, also works with trafficking survivors through the organizations THEIA Project, which includes a VOCA-funded shelter. Greene helped Alexander find an apartment and even convinced the landlord to renovate the space by replacing the floors and covering up cracks and holes in the walls. For Greene, ensuring her clients live in comfort is key to helping them stay on the road to recovery. Greene recalls spending time in homeless shelters that were gross, vermin-ridden, humiliating, and degrading. At the shelter for trafficking victims, she painted the walls and floors with pops of green, yellow, and purple and adorned the office space with house plants. She mows the front lawn herself. I want it to looknotlike a shelter, she told me when I visited. I want it to look like a home. Two years after Alexander moved in, their apartmentthe same one that Greene helped securehas become their sanctuary, where they live with their two cats, Bast and Isis. They painted the walls yellow, green, and blue; hung up their own artwork; and put some of the house plants Greene brought to life in front of the bay windows in their living room, a daily reminder of someone who helped transform their life.According to Greene, Alexander represents the epitome of what Sojourner House and domestic violence organizations like it can do, if they have the vision, the peopleand the funding to support survivors. Paris was determined to just sit in their little apartment and never come out with their cats, Greene told me, but not now. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sojourner House (@sojournerri)Today, Alexander volunteers with Sojourner House and spreads word of its services within the community. They also volunteer with a trans youthmentorship program, through which they meet weekly with a younger trans mentee, and they host eventsincluding a recent makeup workshop, drawing on their cosmetology backgroundfor trans and nonbinary young people. In November, theyll host a virtual Friendsgiving hangoutmeant to be a safe and loving space during Thanksgiving, they said, adding, the holidays can be a tough time of the year for queer folks.Alexander knows firsthand the negative thoughts that can run rampant through survivors minds: We feel like were not worthy. We feel like no one cares. We feel like no one understands. You dont trust that theres genuine empathy out there. Empathy, though, tends to be abundant among people who support survivors of domestic violence; whats in short supply is cash. This is partly why Alexander was eager to tell their story: They want lawmakers to know that VOCA funds have the power and the ability to save lives.I wouldnt be here today, they told me, if it werent for the Sojourner House program. If you or someone you care about is experiencing or at risk of domestic violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by texting start to 88788 or calling 800-799-SAFE (7233) or going tothehotline.org.The Department of Health and Human Services has also compiled alist of organizationsby state. This article was produced with the support of the USC AnnenbergCenter for Health Journalisms 2024 Domestic Violence Impact Reporting Fund.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Death & rape threats force straight activist to flee Uganda over anti-LGBTQ+ law
A 26-year-old climate activist says he had to flee Uganda after facing horrific threats due to his support for LGBTQ+ rights. In addition to his work with environmental non-profit Earth Volunteers, Nyombi Morris, who identifies as straight, has been outspoken about LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda ever since his sister was outed and expelled from school, according to The Guardian. Related Ugandas Kill the Gays law cost the country as much a $1.6 billion in its first year The anti-LGBTQ+ law may alter the trajectory of the countrys economy for years to come, according to a new report. Morris environmental activism, most notably on campaigns against the east African crude oil pipeline (EACOP), have resulted in threats before. But after tabloid newspapers began falsely reporting that he was gay and promoting homosexuality, he feared he could be prosecuted under Ugandas Anti-Homosexuality Act. Global perspectives delivered right to your inbox Our newsletter bridges borders to bring you LGBTQ+ news from around the world. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The law, signed by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in May 2023, punishes aggravated homosexuality including same-sex acts that transmit HIV with the death penalty and imposes a life sentence for recruitment, promotion and funding of same-sex activities. The law even bans identifying as LGBTQ+ in Uganda. The law has been roundly condemned by human rights organizations, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, President Joe Biden, and even Pope Francis. The consequences [of LGBTQ+ advocacy in Uganda] are scary, Morris told The Guardian. Since these claims started, people are afraid of being associated with me because they risk being labeled a [gay] activist.Morris has been accused online of using his influence to advance foreign ideologies and of recruiting high school students into gay clubs through his youth-led climate activism. Schools began withdrawing from projects with Earth Volunteers. Morriss mother was warned that he had been banned from their village, and she was later questioned by police, who seized her phone, about his whereabouts. His brothers have also been suspended from school.Morris himself received an anonymous call in which he was threatened with rape and arrest. He eventually went into hiding and was able to flee to Denmark, where he has applied for asylum, according to The Guardian. I cannot go back to Uganda because politically Im not on the same page as the government, and that puts me in danger, Morris said.Roland Ebole of Amnesty International, which recently released a report on the chilling effect Ugandas anti-LGBTQ+ law has had on freedom of expression in the country, said Morriss case illustrates the far-reaching consequences of the law. Because of the punitive nature of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, human rights defenders and political activists face the threat of being accused of being LGBTQ+ themselves, just to gag or intimidate them into silence, Ebole explained. The overzealousness of [law] enforcement to make arrests or prosecute these cases means that proper investigations may not be carried out, Ebole added. In some cases, the police use the stringent laws and penalties to extort [those under investigation].Morris said his life and work have ground to a halt while awaiting a decision on his asylum status in Denmark. He said his bank account has been frozen and he is barely able to meet his basic needs on the stipend provided by the countrys government. But while he described the ordeal as challenging, he said hes committed to continuing his work. I cant stop now, he said. I have to be part of the solution in climate justice and human rights, thats what keeps me going.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

In a red Pennsylvania district, a grieving father runs on transgender rights
This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. In early April,Trex Proffitt opened his mail-in primary ballot and saw that no Democrats were running for state senate in Pennsylvanias 13th district. It made sense: The district, which covers the city of Lancaster and its surrounding suburbs, has been represented by Republicans for over a century. The incumbent, Scott Martin, isvocallyanti-abortion and thesponsorof a bill banning instruction around gender identity and sexual orientation in elementary schools. Martin won a decisive eleven-point victory against awell-fundedchallenger in 2020. The odds for Democrats have likely gotten slimmer after the district was redrawn in 2022 to include more rural areas. Related 97% of trans youth dont regret transitioning, new study finds The study followed trans kids for a decade. Almost all of them had no regrets. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today But Proffitt, a 56-year-old history teacher at a small Quaker school, still felt something could be done. He decided to run against Martin, winning a write-in campaign to become the Democratic nominee for state senate. After a personal tragedy, Proffitt wanted to center LGBTQ rights in his campaigneven in a reliably Republican district. In 2019, Proffitts son George, who was transgender, died at the age of 20 from a drug overdose. George loved folk punk music and was active in the local LGBTQ community. He had struggled for years with depression and suicidality, but he seemed to be doing better before his death. In the years since, Proffitt has watched anti-transgender rhetoric become increasingly visible in his community, as a national backlash towards trans people amplified and enabled sentiment that was already endemic to Lancaster, he said. As my colleague Kiera Butler hasreported, Lancaster County is home to a burgeoning Christian nationalist movement. In his free time, Proffitt had been walking for long stretches around Lancaster as part of a fundraiser for the Trevor Project, a nonprofit that supports LGBTQ rights. Though he had raised a good chunk of money, he said, it didnt feel like I had done enough. It was in the wake of the suicide of another trans young person in the area, that he saw no one running against Martin. At the time, he told me, the death left him looking for something more to do in my life.Since then, he has campaigned fiercely on transgender rights, an unusual pitch against a conservative incumbent. But, Proffitt hopes, it will show Democrats they do not have to back away from talking about people like his son. Transgender rights remain a third rail in politics, he told me. Dont talk about it. Everybody justwink winksomehow knows youre pro-LGBT+, Proffitt said. I dont think thats working. When I droveout to Lancaster in late October, Pennsylvania was the center of the political universe and campaign signs dotted every intersection. Proffitt met me at a Whole Foods, having just come from a union event. Soft-spoken and a bit world-weary, he described his campaign as a scrappy grassroots effort. His wife, Beth, who works as an administrator at Franklin & Marshall College, was Proffitts campaign manager in the early days. Now, they have a small staff and try really hard to get the word out with frugal means.Campaign finance reports show that Proffitt has around $100,000 on hand while Martin has $790,000. There has been only marginal support from the state Democratic party, which has focused its resources on closer races. This area has gone through periods of neglect from Democrats, Proffitt told me. People arent used to coming out because there is a tradition of always losing this race. Though the 13th district includes the city of Lancaster, its population of 58,000 is outweighed by the suburban and rural areas. Proffitts team is the only Democratic presence in some of the deep-red portions of the county, going where the Harris campaign doesnt seem to send volunteers. He told me that it can lead to outright hostility, particularly because some campaign memorabilia prominently features queer and trans pride flags. In Lancaster, as in many other places, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has become commonplace in local politics and public life. This March, bomb threats led to thecancellationof a drag queen story hour at the library. Several school districts in Lancaster County have signedcontractswith Independence Law Center, a conservative Christian law firm associated with the Family Research Council. One district, Penn Manor, justpassedtwo policies written with the help of the law firm: one mandates that students play sports aligned with the sex they were assigned at birth and the second says parents must approve changes to students names and pronouns. The actions that are happening in many school districts and county governments have really created a sense of trauma amongst transgender people and, in particular, transgender youth, Corinne Goodwin, the executive director of the Eastern PA Trans Equity Project, told me. Advocates say that, over the course of the last year, a handful of transgender young people have died of suicide in Lancaster County. While some Democrats have decided that transgender rights are too complicated and controversial to focus on, Proffitt has decided to talk about them for precisely that reason. As a teacher, coach, and parent of a trans child, Proffitt says he is in a good position to tackle the misinformation and panic around transgender issues. That misinformation is increasing. Former president Donald Trump and other national Republicans have honed in on anti-transgender rhetoric in the final weeks of the election. Between August and early October, Republicans spent over $65 million on anti-transgender ads in more than a dozen states according to aNew York Timesanalysis. Thoughsurveyshave shown that transgender issues are not top-of-mind for many voters, Republican strategistssaythat it is a potent wedge issue, particularly among womena group that the party has lost traction with overabortion. The messaging has eventrickled downto thecongressional racein Pennsylvanias 10th district. Brandon Wolf, press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, told me that this is a tired playbook, and one that hasnt worked inpreviousraces.Still, with some notable exceptionsvice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz recently gave a full-throateddefenseof trans rights on Glennon Doyles podcastDemocrats have been reluctant to address anti-transgender rhetoric head-on.This has been visible in the closely-watched senate races in Texas and Ohio, where Republicans are accusing Democrats of allowing boys to play girls sports. Texas Rep.Colin Allredand Ohio Sen.Sherrod Brownhave both responded by insisting that they dont support doing so, to the dismay of some advocates. The trans writer Erin Reed argued in herSubstackthat Allred and Browns messaging risks reinforcing Republican framing around the validity of transgender identity. Proffitt told me that hes not particularly disappointed in how national Democrats have dealt with the issueyou have to pick which thing youre going to seize upon in the short runeven though hes made a markedly different decision.Despite the narrow odds, Proffitt said that hes hopeful they can close the gap and show that Martins stances are the extreme ones. He told me that hes had productive conversations about LGBTQ issues while door-knocking, because we dont shy away from that.People might be taken aback initially, but Proffitt says they tend to appreciate the opportunity to ask questions. (A 2023surveyfound that only 30 percent of likely voters personally know someone who is trans.) He said that he often tries to appeal to peoples fundamental valuesframing transgender rights as a matter of civil liberties and privacy. When I followed along while Proffitt canvassed in Lancasters West End, a dense neighborhood of townhouses and alleyways, the opportunity didnt always present itself. Except for some stray cats and kids on bikes, it was quiet around dusk on a Saturday. Our handful of conversations with voters were mostly in line with national surveys: most were worried about affordability and none brought up LGBT issues unless asked. Still, I could see that anti-trans rhetoric had filtered through.Latisha Butcher, a 36-year-old home health aide, told me that, despite thedire shortageof workers in her industry, her pay and benefits were not great. After I asked, she told me that she had heard anti-transgender rhetoric, particularly around trans youth. Let them live their lifewhatever makes them happy, Butcher told me.Afterward, Proffitt went to a team dinner with the campaign, and I started on my drive home. I was struck by the enormity of the task that Proffitt had given himself: not just to win the race, but also to change the conversation around transgender rights. It meant that, day in and day out, he had to rehash a difficult and deeply personal issue, often with complete strangers. When I spoke to Proffitt on the phone a few weeks after my visit, he told me that its been tough every day since Georges death in 2019. But I dont mind talking about it, Proffitt said, because people need to know that trans kids experience adversity at higher rates, and adding to their existing difficulties is simply inhumane and unfair. The family dedicated a bench to Georges memory in 2022. He was a big fan ofLes Misrables, and the plaque quotes Victor Hugo: What more could one want? A little garden to wander, and infinite space to dream. After Proffitt told me about George, he seemed worried that he hadnt painted a full picture of his son. Is that enough to work with? he asked.Editors note: If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat at988lifeline.org. Dr. Seuss book banned by GOP after right-wing blamed woke left for canceling him
A Republican-backed law has led to the removal of hundreds of books from school libraries in one Tennessee county including a title by childrens author Dr. Seuss.Dr. Seusss 1974 childrens book Wacky Wednesday is among more than 400 titles that have been banned from school libraries in Wilson Country, Tennessee following changes made to the states 2022 Age Appropriate Materials Act earlier this year, local ABC affiliate WKRN reported. On July 1, ahead of the start of the 2024-2025 school year, the Republican-backed H.B. 843 went into effect. The bill, proposed by state Rep. Susan Lynn (R), amended the 2022 law to require schools to remove all material that contains nudity, or descriptions or depictions of sexual excitement, sexual conduct, excess violence, or sadomasochistic abuseis not appropriate for the age or maturity level of a student in any of the grades kindergarten through twelveor is patently offensiveor appeals to the prurient interest. The law has already led one Wilson County high school to shut down its library. Wilson County Director of Schools Jeff Luttrell, who previously warned about the laws potential impact, released the list of banned books ahead of a recent school board meeting, but does not appear to have commented on the specific reasons why any of the 400+ titles would be removed. Republicans and conservative outlets painted the childrens book author, who died in 1991, as a victim of so-called cancel culture after Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced in March 2021 that it would stop publishing six of his books because they contained racist depictions of characters of color. The company described the books as portraying people in ways that are hurtful and wrong, and said in a statement at the time that Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprisess catalog represents and supports all communities and families. While the decision to stop publishing the six books was made by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, right-wing outlets like Fox News mischaracterized it as a book ban.Unsurprisingly, it has actually been Republican-backed laws like Tennessees that have resulted in the banning of Dr. Seuss books from schools. Wacky Wednesday was previously removed from school shelves in Texas last year. U.S. immigration policy has always been based on racism
Autocrats and other right-wing so-called populists dehumanize, scapegoat, and villainize immigrants as the cornerstone of their hoped-for political victories and governing strategies once in office.Leadersin government, including in Hungary and Italy, have grabbed onto this longtime fear tactic, and it has been used successfully in recent elections in Austria with the far-right Freedom Party(FP), in Germanys eastern state of Thuringia with the Alternative for Germany(AfD), and in recent elections in France. These extremist changes pose grave consequences for the stability of the European Union. Related Empathy is the antidote to the poison of prejudice. Too bad Republicans dont have any. Empathy is the life force of our humanity and ultimately to our recovery during the current crises around the world. Israels politicians, especially on the far-right, including the current regime of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have imposed a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its controland against Palestinian refugees. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law, according toAmnesty International. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Though politicians and members of their constituencies argue immigration policy from seemingly infinite perspectives and sides, one point stands clear and definite: Decisions as to who can enter some countries and who can eventually gain citizenship status generally depends on issues of race.In the United States, for example, immigration systems reflect and serve as the countrys official racial policies. This began long before Donald Trump, the would-be autocrat, stepped foot on the political scene with his xenophobic and racist terminology and policy initiatives. Race as a determining factorLooking back on the historical emergence of the concept of race, critical race theoristsremind us that thisconceptarose concurrently with the advent of European exploration as a justification for conquest and domination of the globe beginning in the 15thcentury of the Common Era (CE) and reaching its apex in the early 20thcentury CE.Geneticiststell us that there is often more variabilitywithina given so-called race than between races, and that there are no essentialgeneticmarkers linked specifically to race. They assert, therefore, that race is a historical, scientific, biological myth, an idea, and that any socially conceived physical racial markers are fictional and are not concordant with what is beyond or below the surface of the body.Though biologists and social scientists have proven unequivocally that theconceptof race is socially constructed (produced, manufactured), this does not negate theveryreal consequences people face living in societies that maintain racist policies and practices on the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and larger societal levels. The British psychologist, Francis Galton (1822-1911) a cousin of Charles Darwin was a founder of the eugenics movement. In fact, Galton coined the term eugenics in 1883 from the Greek word meaning well born. Eugenicists attempted to improve the qualities of a so-called race by controlling human breeding.Galtonargued that genetic predisposition determined human behavior.Heproposedthat the so-called elites in the British Isles were the most intelligent of all the peoples throughout the planet, while [t]he average intellectual standard of the Negro race is some two grades below our own [Anglo-Saxons]. The Australian type is at least one grade below the African Negro and The Jews are specialized for a parasitical existence upon other nations.Harry Hamilton Laughlin (1880-1943), U.S. eugenicist, became superintendent of the Eugenics Record Office from 1910 until 1939. He advocated for mandatory sterilization of the unfit, and he crafted his model sterilization law for the uprooting of inborn defectiveness. Most U.S. states passed sterilization laws, and as late as 1992, 22 states still had these on their books. Germany passed its sterilization law in 1927, and in 1933, Adolph Hitler made it compulsory by passing theLaw for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring. Hitler loosely based the German law on Laughlins model. Nazi Germany involuntarily sterilized approximately 350,000 of its citizens. Laughlin was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Heidelberg in 1936 for his work on behalf of the science of racial cleansing. The U.S. writer, Madison Grant (1865-1937) codified a supposed racialization among European groups in his influential 1916 book,The Passing of the Great Race, or The Racial Basis for European History, in which he argued that Europeans comprised four distinct races:The Nordics of northwestern Europe sat atop his racial hierarchy, whom Grant considered as the natural rulers and administrators, which accounted for Englands extraordinary ability to govern justly and firmly the lower races. Next down the racial line fell the Alpines whom Grant referred to as always and everywhere a race of peasants with a tendency toward democracy although submissive to authority. These he followed with the Mediterraneans of Southern and Eastern Europe, inferior to both the Nordics and the Alpines in bodily stamina, but superior in the field of art. Also, Grant considered the Mediterraneans superior to the Alpines in intellectual attainments, but far behind the Nordics in literature and in scientific research and discovery. On the bottom he placed the most inferior of all the European so-called races: the Jews. The result of the mixture of two races, in the long run, gives us a race reverting to the more ancient generalization and lower type. The cross between a white man and an Indian is an Indian, the cross between a white man and a Negro is a Negro, the cross between a white man and a Hindu is a Hindu, and the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew he wrote.Official immigration and naturalization policyFrom the first day Europeans stepped foot on what has come to be known as the Americas up until this very day, decisions over who can enter the United States and who can eventually gain citizenship status have generally depended on issues of race. U.S. immigration systems have reflected and have served as this countrys official racial policies at any given point in time.Europeans on the North and South American continents established their domination based on a program of exploitation, violence, kidnapping, and genocide against native populations. For example, the Puritans left England for the Americas to practice a purer form of Protestant Christianity. They believed they were divinely chosen to form a biblical commonwealth with no separation between religion and government. They tolerated no other faiths or interpretations of divine precepts. In fact, they murdered and expelled Quakers, Catholics, and others. The American colonies followed European perceptions of race. A 1705 Virginiastatute, the Act Concerning Servants and Slaves, read: [N]o negroes, mulattos or Indians, Jew, Moor, Mahometan [Muslims], or other infidel, or such as are declared slaves by this act, shall, notwithstanding, purchase any Christian (sic) white servant. In 1790, the newly constituted United States Congress passed theNaturalization Act, which excluded all nonwhites from citizenship, including Asians, enslaved Africans, and Native Americans, the latter whom they defined in oxymoronic terms as domestic foreigners, even though they had inhabited this land for thousands of years. The Congress did not grant Native Americans rights of citizenship until 1924 with the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, though Asians continued to be denied naturalized citizenship status. They employed scriptural justification to support the institution of slavery. For example, Ephesians 6:5-6 in the Bible reads,Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ; not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.Later, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate states asserted, [Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty Godit is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelationit has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts.Central to the European-American conquest of territory was the concept of Manifest Destiny, providence that destined U.S. expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific (from sea to shining sea) by the so-called Anglo-Saxon race. This justified in the mind of Europeans the theft of Indigenous peoples territories and a war with Mexico. In reaction to increasing numbers of European immigrants into the country in the 1850s, a movement calling itself The American Party (also known as The Know-Nothings) formed to purify the country by limiting or ending Irish Catholic immigrants and others, and also ending the naturalization of those already here.In 1875, Congress passed the Page Law, which specifically reduced the immigration of women from Asia.Congress passed the first law specifically restricting or excluding immigrants based on race and nationality in 1882. In their attempts to eliminate entry of Chinese (and other Asian) workers who often competed for jobs with U.S. citizens, especially in the western United States, Congress passed theChinese Exclusion Actto restrict their entry into the U.S. for a 10-year period, while denying citizenship to Chinese people already on these shores. The Act also made it illegal for Chinese people to marry white or Black U.S. Americans. The Immigration Act of 1917further prohibited immigration from Asian countries, in the terms of the law, the barred zone, including parts of China, India, Siam, Burma, Asiatic Russia, the Polynesian Islands, and parts of Afghanistan. The so-called Gentlemans Agreement between the U.S. and the Emperor of Japan of 1907, passed to reduce tensions between the two countries, expressly sought decrease immigration of Japanese workers into the U.S.Between 1880 and 1920, in the range of 30-40 million immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe migrated to the United States, more than doubling the population. Fearing a continued influx of immigrants, legislators in the United States Congress in 1924 enacted theJohnson-Reed[anti-]Immigration Act (Origins Quota Act, or National Origins Act) setting restrictive quotas of immigrants from Asia and Eastern Europe, including those of the so-called Hebrew race.Jews continued to be, even in the United States during the 1920s, constructed as nonwhite. The law, on the other hand, permitted large allotments of immigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, and Germany. This law, in addition to previous statutes (1882 against the Chinese, 1907 against the Japanese), halted further immigration from Asia, and excluded Blacks of African descent from entering the United States. It is interesting to note that during this time, Jewish ethno-racial assignment was constructed as Asian. According toSander Gilman,Jews were called Asiatic and Mongoloid, as well as primitive, tribal, Oriental. Immigration laws were changed in 1924 in response to the influx of these undesirable Asiatic elements. In the Supreme Court case,Takao Ozawa vs. United States, a Japanese man, Takao Ozawa filed for citizenship under the Naturalization Act of 1906, which allowed white persons and persons of African descent or African nativity to achieve naturalization status.Asians, however, were classified as an unassimilable race and, therefore, not entitled to U.S. citizenship. Ozawa attempted to have Japanese people classified as white since he claimed he had the requisite white skin. The Supreme Court, in 1922, however, denied his claim and, therefore, his U.S. citizenship. In 1939, the United States Congress refused to pass theWagner-Rogers Bill, which if enacted would have permitted entry to the United States of 20,000 children from Eastern Europe, many of whom were Jewish, over existing quotas.Laura Delano Houghteling, cousin of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and wife of the U.S. Commissioner of Immigration sternly warned, 20,000 charming children would all too soon, grow into 20,000 ugly adults. Also in 1939, on May 13, 937 Germans and other citizens from Eastern European nations mostly all Jews fleeing Nazis brutality booked passage on the German transatlantic ocean liner,St. Louis, from the port of Hamburg bound for Havana, Cuba. Most passengers had applied for U.S. visas, and they planned to wait in Cuba on their previously approved landing permits and temporary transit visas until U.S. officials accepted them into the U.S.Even before embarking from Germany, the passengers became the source of bitter political cross-partisan rivalries in Cuba as several conservative politicians and newspapers demanded the immediate cessation of its policy of admitting Jewish refugees on its land. The Cuban government, therefore, reneged on its offer to honor the passengers landing permits when theSt. Louisentered Cuban waters.Faced with this unforeseen development, the ships captain, Gustav Schroeder, turned theSt. Louistoward the Florida coast of the United States in hopes that U.S. government officials would allow passengers entry on refugee status by processing their visa applications. Unfortunately, though, the political wars transpiring in Cuba on the plight of Jewish refugees were even more intense in the United States. Within the United States, President Roosevelt succumbed to conservative political pressure by following his immigration officials decision to deny safe haven to the ships passengers. The captain had no other choice than to turn his ship around back toward Europe. On route, knowing that returning to Germany meant certain death for his passengers, he negotiated with several governments, whereby Great Britain allowed entry of 288, the Netherlands admitted 181, Belgium took 214, and France took 224.By the end of the war, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that all but one in Great Britain survived, approximately half of the remainder on the continent, 278, survived the Holocaust, and 254 died: 84 who had been in Belgium; 84 in Holland, and 86 who had been admitted to France. Following U.S. entry into World War II at the end of 1942, reflecting the tenuous status of Japanese Americans, some born in the United States, military officials uprooted and transported approximately 110,000 Japanese Americans toInternment (Concentration) Campswithin several interior states far from the shores. Not until Ronald Reagans administration did the U.S. officially apologize to Japanese Americans and to pay reparations amounting to $20,000 to each survivor as part of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act.Finally, in 1952, theMcCarran-Walters Actoverturned the racially discriminatory quotas of the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act. Framed as an amendment to the McCarran-Walters Act, theImmigration and Nationality Act of 1965removed natural origins as the basis of U.S. immigration legislation. The 1965 law increased immigration from Asian and Latin American countries and religious backgrounds, permitted 170,000 immigrants from the Eastern Hemisphere (20,000 per each country), 120,000 from the Western Hemisphere, and accepted a total of 300,000 visas for entry into the country. The 1965 Immigration Law, however, was certainly not the last we saw race used as a qualifying factor. The Arizona legislature passed and Governor Jan Brewer signedSB 1070, which mandates that police officers stop and question people about their immigration status if they even suspect that they may be in this country illegally, and criminalizes undocumented workers who do not possess an alien registration document. If we learn anything from our immigration legislative history, we can view the current debates as providing a great opportunity to pass comprehensive federal reform based not on race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, or other social identity categories, but rather, on humane principles of fairness, compassion, and equity.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Gay man hospitalized after mob attacks him in McDonalds while no one helped
A group of 10 to 15 individuals allegedly attacked Sebastian Thomas Robles Lascarro, a 22-year-old Colombian model, inside a Washington, D.C., McDonalds fast food restaurant after a member of the group uttered homophobic slurs. The attack left Lascarro hospitalized, and he criticized both emergency personnel and local police for their responses to the violence. The attack allegedly occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 27, after Lascarro and his husband left two nearby LGBTQ+ nightclubs: Crush Bar and Bunker. While Lascarro was in line to use a McDonalds self-service kiosk to place his order, Lascarros spouse, Stuart West, said a woman then screamed at his husband to watch where the f**k he was going, he told WTTG. Related Lesbian couple caught having intercourse on McDonalds lawn Do you want fries with that? Lascarro reportedly tried to leave in order to avoid a conflict, when a group of 10 to 15 individuals who were reportedly the womans friends blocked Lascarro from leaving and allegedly called him homophobic slurs like fa**ot and demanded he apologize to the woman. Lascarro refused, and the assault allegedly began. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. No one in the restaurant intervened; no one screamed stop. The attack reportedly left Lascarro injured and bleeding on the sidewalk outside the restaurant while the mob threw food, trash, and drinks at him. Two passers-by eventually contacted emergency medical services to assist Lascarro. At Howard University Hospital, Lascarro was treated for a busted lip, scrapes, and bruises. He was placed in a neck brace and photos show him with bruises and blood on his face. Lascarro is reportedly recovering from his injuries. I fear for his mental health, West said. Weve had conversations about whether D.C. is safe for us and whether the United States was the right choice. Lascarro is originally from Colombia, moved to Washington, D.C., last year, and became a permanent resident of the U.S. this year, NBC News reported.West and Lascarro said that they felt dismissed by both the emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who arrived at the scene and police who took a report of their incident later on. Lascarro said the EMTs failed to acknowledge the severity of the assault and his experience as a gay man, and West said police initially refused to acknowledge the attack as a possible hate crime until he contacted the police departments LGBTQ+ liaison.Westlaunched a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaignto help pay for Lascarros medical bills, as the attack has made it difficult for him to keep modeling. The campaign had raised $7,037 of its $20,000 goal by Monday morning. Thomas is a loving, compassionate person who did not deserve this, and no one in our community should face this kind of hatred, West wrote for the campaign website. Any help to ensure he gets the care he needs to regain his health and peace of mind will be a blessing. This isnt the first time a homophobic attack has occurred in a D.C. fast food restaurant. In August, a gay man was allegedly beaten by Shake Shack employees after kissing his boyfriend.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Democrats are suspiciously optimistic about winning on Election Day
The political stereotype is that Republicans are always publicly confident that they will win, while Democrats are forever convinced that failure is just around the corner. Thats why some of the signs coming out of the Harris campaign in the last week are so interesting. Increasingly, Harris staff believe that they are heading into Election Night in a pretty good place. Meanwhile, Trumps staff is already conducting post-mortems. The polls show the race as essentially a toss-up, so you would think that both sides would be hedging their bets. However, even though the vote counts wont start coming in until tomorrow night, thousands of voters have already cast their ballots. Thats the reason why the Harris team seems to be feeling, in the phrase that staff has adopted, nauseously optimistic. Related Why do Democratic candidates get so defensive about trans issues? In response to attacks, Sherrod Brown and Colin Allred ran ads echoing GOP language instead of reframing the issue. Were confident were going to win, and its not because were running away with it, Harris campaign chair Jen OMalley Dillon said last week. Its because were confident were on path to win a very close election. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today While no one knows yet who these voters chose, we do know who they are, not by name but by party affiliation and gender. That information has led Democrats to think that the trends are running in their favor. Chief among them is the gender gap. In the battleground states among early voters, women represent about 55% of the vote, while men represent 45% of the vote. While its possible that women are flocking to Trump, that seems very unlikely. Trump won only 42% of women voters in 2020, and that was before the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll found Trump with just 36% support among women, compared to 53% for Harris. (The remaining percentage was undecided.)As a confirmation of just how drastic an impact that might have on the race, just look to the Selzer poll of Iowa voters. That poll, which is respected for calling Trumps closing momentum in 2016 when few others did, found Harris ahead (though within the margin of error) among likely voters 47% to 44%. Iowa is a state where Trump was ahead of Biden by 18 percentage points earlier this year and that no one has ever considered to be possible for Democrats to win. The big reason is women voters. In the poll, independent women voters and women over 65 are heavily tilting toward Harris. The results suggest that not only are women turning out for Harris but that undecided voters are also breaking toward Harris as well. The Trump campaign insists that things are fine, even as Trump himself attacked the polls yesterday as corrupt. Trumps aides say they are seeing more Republicans voting early this cycle than in 2020. But thats in large part because Trump explicitly condemned early voting last time out. This time, hes been begging his followers to vote early. The larger number of GOP voters may simply be people who would have voted anyway, not folks especially fired up to vote. Democrats are also seeing more young women and first-time voters among the early voters. What Democrats say they arent seeing is the bro vote, the younger men who usually sit out elections and whom Trump has been courting. Democrats have a number of other things going for them. For one thing, by every measure, Democrats have a far superior get-out-the-vote (GOTV) operation. Trump outsourced his GOTV efforts, first to Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA, and then, after Kirk failed to live up to his own hype, to Elon Musk. Musk has been throwing money at the effort, but there are plenty of signs that the whole project is in shambles, with missed goals and even allegations of fraud.Harris has also been rolling in money in the final stretch, letting her run ads ad infinitum in key states. She has also far outspent Trump on social media, reaching younger audiences that dont always vote. The final reason why Democrats are in a good mood is Trumps campaign. The disciplined campaign that Trump was running early this year evaporated, and now Trump is talking about a golfers privates, threatening to protect women whether the women like it or not, and swaying to music in a trance. On top of that, Trump has gone all in on the MAGA message, which led to disasters like last months rally at Madison Square Garden, which was all too reminiscent of a 1930s pro-Nazi rally and where Puerto Rico was called floating garbage.None of this is to say that the race isnt close. Harris team is reportedly expecting that the margin of victory in battleground states would be just tens of thousands of votes, not a blowout by any means. However, as Jim Messina, who ran Barack Obamas re-election campaign, has said, I would rather be Kamala Harris than I would Donald Trump. We will know all too soon just how well-placed the optimism was. Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Donald Trumps toxic masculinity is killing people
While campaigning in Latrobe, Pennsylvania (where Arnold Palmer was born in 1929 and learned to golf from his father), Donald Trump, in his inimical insensitivity and inappropriateness, referred to the golfers large schlong.Arnold Palmer was all man, and I say that in all due respect to women, Trump said. This is a guy that was all man. When he took the showers with other pros, they came out of there. They said, Oh my God. Thats unbelievable, Trump said with a laugh. I had to say. We have women that are highly sophisticated here, but they used to look at Arnold as a man. Related Donald Trump is a narcissistic sociopath. So what does that say about us? Why can nothing seem to bring him down? While Trump believes that a big penis makes one all man, he clearly does not believe character counts or should count in how we respect and honor people. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today So what about those of us who were born with a penis who do not identify as male? What about people who were not born with a penis who do identify as male? What about those extremely rare individuals who are apparently born with a condition causing three penises, called triphallia? Are they more of a man than even Arnold Palmer?I believe that a major tenet of liberation is having the freedom to self-identify.Numerous commentators have examined Trumps mental pathology, but we cannot understand the motivational factors directing his words and actions without an investigation of socially constructed gender norms. Even before an infants assigned sex is inscribed on a birth certificate, family and friends have already made assumptions about that infants general life course, assumptions based on a highly sophisticated and complex network of gender-based roles. These gendered roles maintain the sexist structures of society, and heterosexism reinforces those roles by casting such epithets as f***ot, d*ke, and homo at anyone who steps outside their designated roles, regardless of their sexual identities. All people are saddled with the heavy burden of the manufactured masculine/feminine binary. Concepts ofmasculinityand femininity promote the domination of males over females and reinforce the identification of maleness with power.Assigned males are encouraged to be independent, competitive, goal-oriented, and unemotional and to value physical and mental courage and toughness. Assigned females, on the other hand, are taught to be nurturing, emotional, sensitive, and expressive, to be caretakers of others while disregarding their own needs. Society mandates that males must be in control. They cannot get too close to their feelings, and if they do, they certainly cannot allow them to show. They must keep it all together and suck it up. They cannot show vulnerability, awkwardness, or doubts. They must be on top, in bed and out.Within the male/masculine conflation, society maintains a rigidly controlled hierarchy. On top isthe so-called Alpha Male, characterized by: Being in charge Inflated confidenceMental and physical toughnessBeing highly competitive, with winning being more important than what is contestedHaving presence (taking up the space they inhabit; being seen as physically dominant, virile)Strong body language in how they talk, walk (exaggerated swagger), what they look at, where they place their hands, where they position themselves around others in what they consider as the most powerful position to take control: I alone can do it.Taking chances and move out of their comfort zone,Being surrounded by trophy girlfriends and/or wives who grab their arm, or are placed literally and figuratively by their side, behind, and beneath them and seldom talkBeing vocal and loud with a solid voiceIntense eye contact and hard, firm handshakesBeing calm under pressure, showing no signs of fear or trepidationKnowing how to dressStanding outHaving no problem saying noPersevering and not giving up,Projecting any apparent weaknesses and shortcomings as the problems of othersBlaming others for these weaknesses, shortcomings, and losses Never apologizing, backing down, or retreating, but fighting back ten times harderBanning signs of tenderness or vulnerability from other team members in the arena of gladiators except for when inebriated and during the heat of sex.For alpha males, weaknesses include intellectualism, empathy, and showing strong emotions except anger and rage. The Beta Male, on the other hand, are seen by the Alphas as: Followers, Unremarkable, Lacking confidence, Avoiders of risk and confrontation Lacking physical presence and charisma Emotional Though ultimately unattainable for any male, the deception of alphamasculinitycirculates around them on patriarchal wires that project the alluringly tasty rewards of control, security, and independence but only if they perpetually compete in the race by sprinting after that elusive rabbit. Some boys and men internalize this socially mandated illusion ofmasculinityto the extreme and turn to self-destructive andtoxichyper-masculinity. As they run and run and run around the course, they invariably stumble, hurting themselves and others along the way. They build and accumulate frustration, turning to resentment and then to anger and often rage because they can never truly reach, grasp, and consume the promised patriarchal bait. For those men and boys who survive, the societal masters dispose of them as dog trainers dispose of the overworked greyhounds. They are stalked, controlled, used, wasted, and ultimately slaughtered.Girls and women, who also grow up in a patriarchal system of domination, are certainly not immune to internalizing these messages, and thereby, they often collude in pressuring males to join and remain in the race. When compulsorymasculinity reaches the level oftoxichyper-masculinity(and even beforehand), all boys and men must surrender their critical reasoning by never challenging the system, along with losing their individuality, their moral and ethical compasses, their emotions, and their very integrity and humanity, all for some promise of security, support, and sense of camaraderie and the privileges that automatically accrue to followers of the patriarchal system of domination and control. Taken to extremes, this often results in violence. On the international scale, it results in wars.Fortunately, a new generation is challenging the system by revolutionizing the former conceptualization of gender identity and expression. They are shaking up traditionally dichotomous binary notions of male/female, masculine/feminine, and gay/straight.They are courageously calling into question this social myth of gender normativity, the boxes society places us into as it imposes upon us all our gender scripts. They have opened the boxes for all of us to ultimately obliterate the gender status quo of binary oppositions by demonstrating the visible ways, the options upon an enormous gender continuum, one that does not depend upon a sex assigned to us, a sex that is imposed and forced upon us by others. Their stories and experiences have great potential to bring us into a future a future in which anyone and everyone on the gender spectrum will live freely, unencumbered by social taboos and cultural norms. It is a future in which the feminine and masculine and everything between can live and prosper in us all.But how many more people must die as a result oftoxictyrants showing off their bare chests atop enormous beasts?Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Pattie Gonia reveals who got her vote and why in the 2024 election
Drag artist, activist, and 2024 Out100 honoree Pattie Gonia has updated her stance on the 2024 presidential election. As Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential election and Kamala Harris became the Democratic candidate running against Donald Trump, Gonia issued a statement shared on July 22 via social media calling for Harris to "end genocide" in Gaza and "end ecocide" to earn her support (and that of many voters who feel similarly). On Sunday, Nov. 3, Gonia announced that she had updated her stance on who to vote for in this election through a new Instagram video:"Dear Kamala Harris, you should be my dream candidate: Black, female, a Democrat. But instead, I feel like voting for you is like voting for the lesser of two evils. I voted for someone that can't even call out genocide, just so we can maybe defend climate change, and women's rights, and immigration what is this?""So, yeah, I'm voting for you," the drag artist and activist added. "But let me rephrase that: what I'm voting for is not Trump. Americans deserve more than the choices were given under the broken two-party system, but the time to fix that is not now, because we cannot let the person that the Nazi party is endorsing into office."Gonia concluded, "And Kamala Harris, should you win, you have a sh*t load of work to do. Come January, you can do better, and we hope you do."See on InstagramWhen reached for comment, Gonia explained her updated stance even further."Voting isn't a love letter, it's a chess move," Gonia tells Out. "American politics makes me so sad, but it's also been motivating. In America, if you want change, you have to be the change. Our politicians are not our saviors."The drag star also brought up NDN Collective, an Indigenous-led organization that describes its mission as "creating sustainable solutions on Indigenous terms.""NDN Collective, a group of indigenous activists, has a strategy for 'voting like a radical' that resonates with me. It goes as follows: 1. All candidates, once elected, become our opponents; 2. We vote for the ones we're best suited to fight; 3. We protect movements, our real sources of power."See on InstagramGonia included additional thoughts in the comments section under this new video. Besides highlighting the work from the NDN Collective (@ndncollective), Gonia wrote:"P.S. at this point, if you vote 3rd party or protest vote, you're literally helping Tr*mp win.""& at least Kamala will maybe protect my right to disagree with her.""I have to believe that as the VP she can't say or do all she wants right now.""Because y'all still seem to be very confused in the comments I voted for Kamala."Earlier this year, Gonia's likeness was featured without her consent in an anti-transgender attack ad from Trump's presidential campaign, which was first reported by The Advocate in September 2024.In October, Gonia addressed the unauthorized usage of her likeness in the Trump ad, revealing in a new Instagram video that she and her team were "exploring legal options" in order to "respond accordingly."The Advocate reported on the story and confirmed with Gonia's spokesperson that they were indeed exploring legal action.See on InstagramFor more information about Pattie Gonia's work and upcoming events, you can visit her official website.

This election could be the most important moment in the history of LGBTQ+ rights
The day the United States Constitution was signed, Benjamin Franklin was approached by a young woman, Elizabeth Willing Powel, while walking along South Third Street in Philadelphia. Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic, or a monarchy? Powel asked. Franklins answer: A republic, if you can keep it. The good doctors words of caution should carry particular weight in the fraught political climate in which we find ourselves.235 years after that memorable exchange, our ability to preserve this democratic republic hangs in the balance. This is even more true for we, the LGBTQ+ people of America. As 5.5% of the US population, our fate goes hand-in-hand with the way our country votes. Never in the history of our small but vibrant community have we stood on such unstable ground. Related Trans people face barriers at the polls. The LGBTQ+ community is helping knock them down. LGBTQ+ organizers are laser-focused on making sure that queer voters can overcome the obstacles that may prevent them from casting their ballots. Yes, its true that in our long journey of slow progress, weve existed as a marginalized, underground, often reviled, and historically criminalized group. Nevertheless, in times fair or foul, we still existed, and in recent years, we even began to thrive. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today This time around, whether we thrive or have the right to exist at all is an open question. Thats not hyperbole; Project 2025, the GOPs 1,000-page operating manual for a possible second Trump presidency, takes direct aim at LGBTQ+ rights. The plan includes ending marriage equality, insisting that only heterosexual, two-parent families are safe for children, removing protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in law and federal policy, and expelling trans men and women from military service. Thats only a small sample of the pantheon of barbaric actions the GOPand a Trump-led White House are prepared to carry out in their nightmare vision for the United States.Thats all in addition to candidate Trumps own hatemongering words, which he has vomited forth on the campaign trail from coast to coast. Consider his false assertion that American children are getting gender transition surgery at school, amplifying the GOPs wild claims that schools are forcing kids to become transgender and helping minors transition without parental consent. Or, more tellingly, the Trump campaigns nearly $20 million ad buy attacking trans people, who just want to live as they truly are. Also, Kamalas pledge to ensure that prison inmates will get medically necessary gender-affirming care or surgery while incarcerated is already mandated by federal law, and Trump followed the same law while he was in office. Notable figures within the LGBTQ+ community have made very clear the dangers of a second Trump presidency. Acclaimed actor, vocalist, activist, and podcast host Tym Moss reminded us that immediately after Trumps 2017 inauguration, Everything on the official website of the White House mentioning LGBT and our rights had been removed and remained removed throughout his term. Former CNN anchor Don Lemon stated firmly that Kamala Harris is on the side of democracy, highlighting her opponents fascistic campaign themes. Upper Darby, Pennsylvania Councilor Jess Branas, who won a historic victory that made her the first-ever out lesbian on the Council, warned, The future of LGBTQIA+ rights under a resurrected Trump presidency is a horrific thought. Not only will our community cease to have rights on how we live and who we love, but will have a great impact on if we receive healthcare, job opportunities, and housing. Unfortunately, I feel as if those in our community will be considered sub-par citizens that Trump and his supporters will vilify and violate every ounce of our being.Bishop Kevin E. Taylor, a pastor and longtime LGBTQ+ community leader, put it in his own eloquent manner: Today is the first day of YESVEMBER, not November. I am hopeful, thoughtful and prayerful that the LGBTQ community, the Black community, the Puerto Rican community, the feminist community, the members of the differently abled communities and so many other people of sound reason and sense, will mobilize, as we already have with early elections, to send a loud and resounding voice that Trump is finished. The pastor, who directs the North Jersey Community Research Initiative (NJCRI), underscored the role of bias in Trumps platform. This racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic criminal will not have the seat of power to try to further divide his nation! Given that Trump was awarded absolute immunity from prosecution as President, it is more than possible that, like the migrants he so publicly despises, roundups of LGBTQ+ people are not far behind in a Trump dictatorship. LGBTQ+ people face unique barriers to voting. Has this affected you?
Election Day is this week, and tens of millions of people already cast ballots by Monday morning. For many people, voting is easy. They go to drop off their ballot or vote in person early or on Election Day and no one questions their identity or their right to vote. For others, the election requires some work. One transgender person who spoke with LGBTQ Nation said that he has had his identity questioned almost every single time he has gone to vote. LGBTQ+ people face unique barriers to voting, but its not just the LGBTQ+ community that can be turned away from the polls. A lack of language access, purges of voter rolls, restrictive voter ID laws, and poorly trained poll workers can all combine to keep eligible voters from casting ballots. Add in reduced voting hours and early voting, long lines due to a lack of funding or closed polling places, and voting can be a difficult sojourn in some parts of the country. So we want to know what your experience has been like. Tell us in the poll below. Share your opinion View the article on LGBTQ Nation to participate in our reader poll.

Trans people face barriers at the polls. The LGBTQ+ community is helping knock them down.
As LGBTQ+ groups mobilize ahead of Election Day, Wulf Roby knows firsthand that access to the voting booth cannot be taken for granted. Roby, a 39-year-old nonbinary advocate and community leader, says they were routinely refused the ability to vote before having their name legally changed in 2017. When Roby would present their uncorrected Kansas drivers license at the polls, they would be accused of fraud and turned away, occasionally given the option of filling out a provisional ballot. Before getting their corrected ID, Roby says they can only think of one time that I did not have an issue while attempting to cast their vote.It fed into those feelings of isolation and apathy, Roby tells LGBTQ Nation. I felt like not just that my opinions didnt matter but that people like me dont belong here. Why stay somewhere where youre not only very clearly not wanted but where your interests are not represented? Why would you want to keep beating your head on that brick wall? It makes you feel like sh*t.LGBTQ+ organizers are laser-focused this year on making sure that queer voters, particularly those from the most marginalized populations, can overcome the myriad obstacles that may prevent them from participating in democracy. The estimated number of trans people potentially impacted by voter ID laws could actually be larger than the margin of victory. Jody Herman, Senior Scholar of Public Policy, The Williams Institute Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today According to the Williams Institute, a pro-LGBTQ+ think tank at the University of California, Los Angeles, more than 210,000 trans people could potentially be unable to vote because they lack access to the identification necessary to cast a ballot in their state. That could make the difference in a close presidential election: In the 2020 race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, three states Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin were decided by less than one percent. The margin in Georgia, which helped Biden secure the White House, was just 11,779 votes. We are in a world where we have very tight elections, so every vote matters a great deal, says Jody Herman, senior scholar of public policy at the Williams Institute. We see in our estimates that the estimated number of trans people potentially impacted by voter ID laws could actually be larger than the margin of victory. Its imperative that people who are eligible to vote are able to do so, and we need to make sure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to vote. Your Vote is a step toward Equality for All Make sure youre ready to vote! Building LGBTQ+ political powerWhat these barriers entail varies widely by state. Currently, at least 36 states have at least some form of voter ID laws in place, and eight of those states have instituted new restrictions since 2020 when Trump made unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud. Per the Williams Institute, 21% of eligible trans voters reside in states with the strictest possible measure in place: the requirement to show a government-issued ID at the polls rather than a piece of mail, utility bill, or other means of identity verification. Many trans people may, unfortunately, struggle to meet the more stringent standard. A 2022 report from the National Center for Trans Equality found that 48% of trans people did not have a single form of ID with their correct name on it, and 59% did not have gender-congruent identification. These discrepancies are among the many reasons that Xavier Persad, senior policy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union, says advocates are fighting to pass laws protecting the right to vote, particularly among marginalized groups. Updating IDs can be complicated, time-consuming, and expensive, Persad tells LGBTQ Nation. Thats why were working at all levels of government, including in Congress, to pass robust federal protections, including the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Freedom to Vote Act, and the Native American Voting Rights Act. We want to send the message that your voice matters, and your vote matters. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACLU (@aclu_nationwide)Absent robust protections at the nationwide level, LGBTQ+ advocates are working to ensure that queer Americans have the guidance they need to make sure they are not denied the ability to vote. Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) recently launched its Transform the Vote website, a resource page informing voters about the voter ID laws in each state and offering guidance about how to correct outdated identification. Also available is a printable, step-by-step checklist for trans voters to ensure voters are fully prepared on Election Day.Devon Ojeda, a senior national organizer for A4TE, says that LGBTQ+ groups are becoming increasingly proactive in engaging the public, whether educating voters about their rights or getting them to the polls. This year, A4TE is part of a coalition of 45 state and national organizations contacting Americans through phone and text banking efforts. In A4TEs first three weeks as part of that effort, the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit was able to register an additional 600 voters to create a robust voter database for future elections. The long-term goal, Ojeda says, is to mobilize a voting bloc of trans people and allies to show that far more people support the community than oppose its right to exist.Building trans political power is a critical means of fighting back against the widespread attacks on the LGBTQ+ community by the far right, which have taken center stage during the presidential election. Trumps reelection team, for instance, has reportedly spent $21 million in ads targeting Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, for supporting trans equality. I barely sleep at night, Ojeda tells LGBTQ Nation. Im really stressed out. It feels like the Trump campaign is doing everything they can to dehumanize us, to portray us as the other. Trump refuses to see us as people. He refuses to see us as Americans. Related Donald Trump is a unique threat to LGBTQ+ Americans. Were endorsing Kamala Harris. Trump will wield the power of the state to oppress transgender people. Harris represents the promise of American multicultural democracy. Turning out the voteWith the election likely to be decided along extremely thin margins, numerous campaigns hope to get as many LGBTQ+ voters to the polls as possible. Among the most prominent is 10 Days of Action, a voter mobilization effort mounted by the Human Rights Campaign in partnership with Out for Harris/Walz, the Democratic tickets LGBTQ+ recruitment arm. The campaign, which lasted from October 11 to 20, targeted queer voters in all seven battleground states likely to decide the 2024 election: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Of the 174 events held in conjunction with the campaign, 10 Days of Action also included efforts in California, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and Texas, where the outcome of critical House and Senate races could decide which party holds a majority in Congress.HRC President Kelley Robinson says 10 Days of Action was intended to reach the 75 million U.S. voters the organization has identified who consistently support LGBTQ+ equality at the ballot box. The campaign coincided, she adds, with a historic ad buy from the Democratic National Committee focused on regional LGBTQ+ news publications in swing states, including Georgia Voice, Philadelphia Gay News, and Out South Florida. Freedom is on the ballot, the advertisement read. Make a plan to vote. HRC, for its part, launched a seven-figure ad campaign highlighting Harris pro-LGBTQ+ record, as well as the existential threat posed by another Trump presidency. Were already in a state of emergency, Robinson says. HRC declared a national state of emergency last year in response to not only the horrific increase of anti-LGBTQ+ bills but also the violence our community is experiencing. One in five of every hate crime is motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ bias. Our trans community, especially Black trans women, continue to experience high levels of mortality. This is a crisis, and if Donald Trump is elected, it will get even worse. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Human Rights Campaign (@humanrightscampaign)Other campaigns are getting creative to reach persuadable voters who might otherwise slip through the cracks on Election Day. Drag Out the Vote launched in 2020 to engage the estimated one in five LGBTQ+ Americans who are not registered to vote, per its executive director, Christopher Diaz. To help reach those voters, Drag Out the Vote throws drag events where people can fill out their voter registration or even cast a ballot. At a recent Las Vegas event, volunteers with the campaign shuttled voters to the polls and then brought them back to enjoy the free food and drag performances. While Drag Out the Vote doesnt have its totals for 2024 yet, Diaz estimates the initiative has reached more than 700,000 voters over the past four years, including 100,000 in Wisconsin and 80,000 in Pennsylvania.Queers for Kamala, meanwhile, is attempting to use Charli XCXs viral endorsement of Harris from July 2024 to fuel a get-out-the-vote effort in support of the vice presidencys candidacy. The campaign takes volunteers on a lime-green Brat Bus mirroring the aesthetic of the musicians zeitgeist-defining album to engage undecided voters in Pennsylvania, where Harris and Trump are separated by less than a point in polling averages tallied by FiveThirtyEight. In its first three trips to the state, volunteers with Queers for Kamala knocked on 15,000 doors, including in Northampton County. In this greater Philadelphia district, voters have aligned with the outcome of all but three presidential elections since 1920.Jeffrey Omura, co-founder of Queers for Kamala, says that hes been inspired to see New York Citys LGBTQ+ community come together for this effort, noting that every queer political club in the city and several gay bars have lent their support to the campaign. I dont know if the queer community has ever organized in this way before, he tells LGBTQ Nation. The queer community tends to be segmented, and one thing that we were trying to do was really bring that community together. This is just the beginning. In coming election cycles, Im really interested to see what the community can accomplish together. Related Campaigning for Kamala Harris is the embodiment of queer joy Memes and good vibes wont win this election. Action will. Looking aheadIf LGBTQ+ advocates are engaging in unprecedented organizing efforts in the 2024 election, its because the stakes have never been higher. Should he be re-elected to the White House, Trump is planning an all-out assault on LGBTQ+ equality, particularly trans rights. According to his campaign website, he intends to implement a federal ban on gender-affirming care for minors, nationwide Dont Say Gay policies in schools, and legislation mandating that the only genders are male and femaleand they are assigned at birth. During his previous four years in office, the Trump administration was responsible for more than 200 attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, including banning trans people from the military and rescinding protections for trans students.Your vote matters so much that they dilute our electoral power by redrawing the districts to take away representation and funding from our communities. Your vote matters that much.Rae Leiner, Field Director, National LGBTQ Task ForceDespite the challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community, organizers say they are optimistic as they look to the future. Rae Leiner, field director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, notes that a fifth of all voters will identify under the queer umbrella by the 2040 election. Although the advocacy group has been engaging in its Queer the Vote campaign for decades, which includes phone banking and educational events, Leiner says the Task Force is deepening its commitment to electoral politics because it understands how big the potential impact stands to be. This is the first year, for example, that the organization has endorsed a presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in the 1970s. Its also rolling out a legislative scorecard to hold politicians accountable for serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.Although restrictive ID laws, gerrymandering, and other efforts at voter suppression are intended to make marginalized people feel as if they dont have a voice, Leiner hopes the intense engagement aimed at LGBTQ+ voters shows the community how much power they do have. When I have conversations with folks in the community, they often think, My vote doesnt matter. It doesnt change anything, they tell LGBTQ Nation. You have to understand that your vote matters so much that they dilute our electoral power by redrawing the districts to take away representation and funding from our communities. Your vote matters that much. 30 HILARIOUS reactions to Trump BIZARRELY simulating oral sex on his microphone
Whenever the Republicans gather, there's bound to be some heathenous gay activity, but they usually do their best to keep it behind closed doors until it's time for them to face the public and do everything in their power to "wipe out" the homosexuality most of them partake in anyway. But I digress.Recently, one Donald J. Trump -- who is the Republican choice for President, if you have somehow missed his noise -- enlightened us all as to what's really going on in his mind, and perhaps that he's even turned on by... microphones?Okay, that last part is a bit of a stretch, but, over the weekend, Trump did spend some time ranting and raving (as he does) about how "all he asks for" is a "good mic," which was an issue for him on this particular day. I personally would prefer if microphones were suddenly to ban together to shut him up, but that's neither here nor there.Anyway, during his speech/vent/ramble/whatever he was talking about, Trump, albeit somewhat inadvertently, performed fellatio with his microphone stand.First off, check out the full clip and then we'll discuss: (@) Very soon after, this clip quickly circulated the internet in droves and has come in as a last-minute punch against the Trump campaign ahead of the November 5 election. (@) Funny as that may be for some of us, the truth is, it also presents a bit of a double standard. Consider the following reaction: (@) What would the Republicans do if the Harris campaign did anything like this? Mind you, this comes from the party that tries to convince the American people that Kamala Harris is not a good contender because she... laughs a lot? And is pretty? And hangs out with Beyonc? Or something?Anyway, vote on or by Tuesday, November 5, let's get this clown out of here, and keep scrolling for some of the best reactions to his on-stage blunder. North Carolina is a swing state, so why are its top GOP candidates far-right MAGA extremists?
If you wanted to attend a Kamala Harris or Donald Trump rally, living in North Carolina would be a good place to start, as polls show it as a toss-up despite last going blue in 2008 for Barack Obama. For all the attention it gets, the states unique political landscape, from its large rural strongholds to its growing cities, is often misunderstood. It is a state with a Democratic governor, the outgoing Roy Cooper, and a history of Republican Party leaders who have vacillated over the years from fringe to mainstream and back again. Its one of the few battleground states this election, which also has some of the most extreme Republican candidates in the country on its ballots. The Republicans have a deep base here, a very conservative [base] on the cultural issue. Think [staunchly anti-LGBTQ+ former senator from North Carolina] Jesse Helms, Pope Mac McCorkle, a professor at Duke Sanford School of Public Policy and a former Democratic strategist, told LGBTQ Nation.Helms said, Homosexuals are weak, morally sick wretches. He attempted to block Roberta Achtenberg from becoming assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development because she was, in his words, a damn lesbian. During his 1990 campaign against former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt, Helms claimed he was facing a secret campaign funded by gay bars from Washington to San Francisco. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The late Sen. Jesse Helms, in 1987.Helms won that race. And while hes been dead for over a decade, his legacy looms large in the Tar Heel State. Many of the same types of voters are still around, supporting rabidly anti-LGBTQ+ candidates like Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R).At the same time, theres a deep base of, I wouldnt say, real lefties, but pretty strong progressive elements, McCorkle added. Especially in Research Triangle Park [bounded by Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh], and we have a lot of universities, [as well as] the Charlotte area, with the finance and the tech going on, and so its a split state. And it swings between Republicans and Democrats depending on the election, but its not like its a state full of classic moderates, so to speak. So, what exactly is going on in North Carolina in 2024, and what does it say about where the overall election, and indeed the nation, is headed? Anti-LGBTQ+ Republicans dominating the ticketLt. Gov. Robinson, who is running for governor, has been making national headlines for months for his extreme positions and sordid personal life.Robinson was getting national attention well before the election for his extreme statements. They include comparing gay people to maggots, saying transgender women should find a corner outside somewhere to go to the restroom instead of using public restrooms, calling Black Democrats slaves, and targeting Marvels Black Panther as the work of an agnostic Jew and satanic Marxists. Then came the discovery of his bizarre habit of letting his freak flag fly on an online porn forum, where he called himself a Black Nazi who would like to enslave people, as well as a perv who reminisced about times when he spied on women in a gym shower. He also shared his love of watching adult content featuring transgender women. (Robinson denies he wrote these comments.)While polls showed that he was already losing the race to Democratic opponent, Attorney General Josh Stein, his support has since cratered. But hes not the only Republican extremist who has targeted the LGBTQ+ community. Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) is running against Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-NC) to replace outgoing Attorney General Stein. Bishop is perhaps best known for being the architect of the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, more commonly known as HB2, or, more simply as the bathroom bill, which banned trans people from using facilities that match their gender identity and blocked local pro-LGBTQ+ ordinances. According to most political observers, the bill and the state boycotts it ignited cost then-Gov. Pat McCrory (R) his reelection bid.Screenshot North Carolina superintendent candidate Michele Morrow | Screenshot Then theres Michele Morrow, a former nurse and homeschool teacher running against Mo Green for superintendent of public instruction. Morrow cited Greens promotion of his endorsement from LGBTQ+ rights advocacy group Equality NC on X, claiming their mission is to promote LGBTQ+ power and falsely stating the + includes pedophilia, a far-right conspiracy theory found on the darkest corners of the web. Morrow has also called public schools socialism centers and indoctrination centers. She also called for the execution of former President Barack Obama. In the race to replace Robinson as lieutenant governor, Democratic candidate Rachel Hunt faces Republican Hal Weatherman, who, as a college student writing for his school paper, compared abortion to slavery and the Holocaust and said a mandatory educational session on date rape did little more than remind us that girls can be teases and guys have active hormones, comments which have resurfaced and drawn controversy. Why all the extremists? So why, then, are Republican candidates in a purple state spewing rhetoric more extreme than what is heard from the likes of Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) or Matt Gaetz (R-FL), both of whom represent deep red districts?I mean, the reality is partisanship trumps almost everything, Dr. Steven Greene, a professor of Political Science at North Carolina State University, told LGBTQ Nation. People dont like anti-LGBTQ extremism, but if theyre a Republican and thats what the Republican politician represents, theyll take it, just like people regularly vote for Republican politicians who have much more extreme views than even many of the Republican voters. So the key is once these people with these views, when the primaries Republicans are going to vote for them, he added. And theyre voting on their perceptions of Joe Biden, of inflation, of immigration and all these other things, which people rank much more highly on their issue priorities.[Theyll] say, Given the choice, I would prefer Dan Bishop was not such an opponent of LGBTQ rights; however, hes going to stand up for these immigration policies that are really important to me.Jodi Walker of Hendersonville, NC, casts her vote at the Henderson County Board of Elections on Nov. 2, 2024. Saturday was the last day of early voting in North Carolina.McCorkle noted that Republicans quickly returned to nominating extreme candidates after the compromise on HB2.They compromised, licked their wounds, [Democratic Gov. Roy] Cooper got in because of it, but then all of a sudden Mark Robinson and these even more MAGA candidates were elected in the primaries because the Republican electorate in this state is so far to the right, McCorkle said. It was so far to the right that an incumbent conservative state superintendent of education [Catherine Truitt] lost to a woman [Morrow] who thinks that Obama should be assassinated on TV, that kind of thing.Steven Greene said that LGBTQ+ issues arent going to swing independents in the state (who are functionally Democrats and Republicans and have attitudes that reflect that), giving Republicans space to use those issues to galvanize their base while nominating candidates who appear more moderate but wont oppose the anti-LGBTQ+ extremism. So the Republicans have had a very tough formula in federal races, and others, and theyve tended since Jesse Helms to nominate what I would call, kind of, dont rock the boat conservatives: Richard Burr, Thom Tillis, before McCroy got stuck with HB2 because of what the legislature did, [former] Governor Jim Martin; they arent liberals, they arent pro-LGBTQ, but theyre not demagogue, rock the boat cultural radicals, he said. They want business to flow, and they dont want all kinds of disruption like the HB2 bill. That is a very tough formula in North Carolina, and kind of still explains North Carolina as kind of purplish, maybe even center-right But the problem now is that the Republican primary electorate has gotten so MAGA that the Republicans really have this problem of how are they going to get more mainstream people out of their primaries. The North Carolina House of Representatives reconvenes for the short session on Wednesday, April 24, 2024Equality North Carolina Executive Director Eliazar Posada said the election cycle is playing out as expected. We know that the Republican party has been using the LGBTQ community as a galvanizing tool for their base, spreading misinformation about trans kids, about trans people in general, about what the community stands for and what the community is, he said. He added that he wasnt surprised to see them continue pushing that rhetoric just knowing that it polls well for them.Posada also noted a recent rise in anti-LGBTQ+ bills, three of which were made law after Republicans overrode Gov. Coopers veto.I think one of the big disconnects here is while the candidates are very, very much not middle of the road as weve seen in the past, one of the big things that theyre driving into is the anti-LGBTQ rhetoric because it brings out Republican voters. We know that its a proven case. And if I was to guess, that would be one of the reasons that we have very anti-LGBTQ and just pretty far-fetched candidates this time around. Increased polarization on the rise nationwideAnd this heightened polarization is not just a North Carolina issue. As Rachel Kleinfeld, a senior fellow in Carnegies Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program, notes in her paper Polarization, Democracy, and Political Violence in the United States: What the Research Says, more ideologically extreme politicians have been running for office since the 1980s. Among the pool of people wishing to run, party chairs more often select and support extreme candidates, especially on the right. She also points out that research suggests Americans are not as ideologically polarized as they believe themselves to be, [but] they are emotionally polarized. This means Americans harbor strong dislike for members of the other party, which likely also plays a role in voting behavior. However, concerning North Carolinians this year, McCorkle sees a potential shift owing to one candidate in particular.Maybe it wont matter, maybe the Republican label still works enough in enough of these races, and the Democratic label is still too shaky, McCorkle said, but it looks like the Republicans with Mark Robinson have come up against the wall finally and people are just going, No, were not going to have this.March 2, 2024; Greensboro, N.C., USA; North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson speaks during a rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Saturday afternoon. But he is still unsure how it will all play out. With Robinson, that has really turned out to be probably the death knell. The question is, what happens in these other races? Do people not know whats going on in these other races? he asked. He sees a scenario in which many low information voters could vote along traditional party lines, assuming these candidates might turn out to be like their less zealous predecessors who, in some ways, didnt want to rock the boat. But boy, the ones who are running now, they rock the boat and punch a hole in the boat every day, it seems like. Moving forward, Democrats are trying to tie Republicans to Robinson as LGBTQ+ advocates prepare for the worstIts a shift Democrats are taking full notice of, with candidates and campaigns working overtime to tie the rest of the Republicans to Robinson.Jackson has pointed to a series of quotes his opponent, Bishop, has made over the years in support of Robinson. These include calling himself a big fan of his and saying they were very close friends, as well as promising to be his sidekick if both are elected.Mo Green, the Democrat running for superintendent of public instruction, recently shared an event flier to Instagram highlighting that Morrow would be appearing alongside Robinson at an event in the small town of Swansboro, calling them a dangerous duo.The Harris campaign has also gotten in on the act, with the Associated Press reporting that Robinson has been a key topic of conversation with volunteers, a message they have then been putting forth to voters. They also noted Democrats wave signs warning of Trump-Robinson extremism at their press conferences and a billboard campaign in key cities warning that Robinson is unhinged. Kamala Harris at a September 12, 2024, campaign event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Harris also released a campaign ad showing clips of Robinson making incendiary and controversial remarks about abortion interspersed with clips of Trump praising him.Whether this effort will prove fruitful for Democrats remains to be seen, while advocates have little choice but to remain optimistic, if cautiously so.[If anti-LGBTQ candidates win], it would mean we have a lot of work to do to secure our community and educate the population overall. But one of the things that I tell my community and my team is that were going to work hard every day so that doesnt happen, Equality North Carolinas Posada said. And in the worst case scenario, Posada said, if these candidates become elected officials, our work just becomes that much more important to combat the policy that they want to pass and to protect our community members.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

6 states where LGBTQ+ voters could swing the election
In June 2024, LGBTQ Nation met with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). The energy was cautiously optimistic. First Lady Jill Biden would host a Pride event on the South Lawn the following afternoon where Deborah Cox sang and the smell of hot dogs and popcorn wafted among the revelers basking in D.C.s scorching sun. The following night, President Biden debated Donald Trump, and we quickly felt a different kind of heat: panic. We all know what happened next as Vice President Kamala Harris stepped into the spotlight, eventually with Governor Tim Walz in tow as her running mate. According to Forbes, the campaign has raised nearly a billion dollars between January 2023 and October 16, 2024, with much of it being poured into a handful of swing states that will determine the future of democracy. Related Donald Trump is a unique threat to LGBTQ+ Americans. Were endorsing Kamala Harris. Trump will wield the power of the state to oppress transgender people. Harris represents the promise of American multicultural democracy. Through what has proven to be one of the most chaotic and heart-palpitating election cycles in history, HRC has stayed the course in its commitment to leveraging the equality vote the 75+ million Americans (LGBTQ+ voters and allies) who prioritize inclusive policies when making decisions at the ballot box. The organization invested $15 million throughout the campaign to reach voters in six key swing states. Independents may reshape Arizonas future. LGBTQ+ voters arent convinced.A shift to a blue Arizona is a polarizing conversation in some LGBTQ+ circles not among political divides but among those skeptical that anything will change for the better once it happens. On one hand, the rise in Democratic leadership has meant a possibility for safety, such as a statewide anti-discrimination law thatlawmakers have failed to passfor five years. But on the other hand, being a purple state hasnt translated as a shift to blue not by far.But its not just LGBTQ+ issues on queer voters minds. Residents have long had concerns regarding water and education funding, both priority issues that a majority of Arizonans believe need to be addressed in state politics, according to a 2024 surveyby the Center for the Future of Arizona.Arizona is now very young, and theres a generation of youth that have just started voting that want to stay here and continue to change this place, Bridget Sharpe, state director for the Human Rights Campaign of Arizona tells LGBTQ Nation. But will they vote? Read more about Arizona here. Georgia could swing away from a GOP trifecta. These LGBTQ+ people are making that happen. In a state like Georgia that has a Republican trifecta a Republican governor and a party majority in both chambers of the state legislature queer community leaders and political strategists are working diligently to prove Atlanta isnt the states only allegedly progressive community.Organizations likeGeorgia Equality, the states largest and oldest LGBTQ+-centered advocacy organization, are actively working to engage, educate, and advocate. This past year, it played an integral role in helping defeat the nearly 20 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in the state legislature by appearing regularly at the state Capitol for hearings, votes, and meetings alongside other pro-LGBTQ+ groups. We agree that housing should be affordable. We agree that we should have health care and that Medicare and Medicaid should be expanded. The economy. Housing. As well as the rise of transgender hate ideology and reproductive rights. They are all important issues to voters in Georgia, Omarion Smart, a senior at Georgia State University, tells LGBTQ Nation. No one issue has priority over the other. Yet we have those in the legislature that do not reflect the population of our state, and its time that we change that. Read more about Georgia here. Michigans pro-equality progress hangs in the balance. Will voters preserve the wins or turn back the clock?Just last year, the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Michigan culminated in the passage of an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) to include LGBTQ+ residents. While that requiredmore than 40 years of activism and advocacyby pro-equality legislators and the community, the fight accelerated around 2014. Before that, with the passage of Michigans so-calledMarriage Amendment(an effort to ban same-sex marriage) in 2004, the queer community fought hard but made few gains. Its been a long journey of pushing for LGBTQ rights and watching this virulent opposition to LGBTQ rights form, State Senator Jeremy Moss tells LGBTQ Nation. I just think the population in Michigan couldnt sustain one more election cycle where the Republican Party was neglecting real issues, economic issues, democracy issues, issues of freedom and autonomy. At present, some legislators and stakeholders are looking at ways tostrengthen Michigans hate crimes statuteand consider whether Michigan could be thenext trans refuge state, among other initiatives. This is a state thats gone through a lot of fights and trauma over the last several years, says Moss. In Michigan, it really does feel like democracy is on the line. So we are on guard every day to protect our progress. Read more about Michigan here. LGBTQ+ Latino voters could help Nevada go blue. Heres what theyre doing to get out the vote.Nevadans have an unpredictable history at the polls. Out of the last 12 national elections, the state split six to six voting for a Democratic or Republican presidential candidate, while the margin for Democrats has narrowed in every election since Obama won in 2008. Adding to the voter volatility: an electorate where unaffiliated voters outnumber both Democrats and Republicans in the state.Younger voters and people of color really feel alienated by this two-party system, and they really connect with candidates that meet voters on a more personal level, State Representative Cecelia Gonzlez tells LGBTQ Nation. The shift reflects a growing frustration with traditional party politics and a desire for candidates who speak to the real issues and not just these partisan talking points, Gonzlez continues. Young people, Latinos, and Asian communities are really whats going to get the vice president and Walz across the finish line. Read more about Nevada here. Pennsylvania could decide the next president as it struggles with LGBTQ+ rights and immigration liesFor LGBTQ+ people living in the purple state of Pennsylvania, anti-LGBTQ+ bias and discrimination add a layer of concern to the issues already facing most Americans. Like everywhere, voters are worried about issues like the economy that impact their daily lives. But LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians have additional anxieties and obstacles to contend with. For one, bigotry is still legal in 70% of Pennsylvania.Pennsylvania is unique in the Northeast as the only state without a statewide non-discrimination law protecting LGBTQ+ people. Approximately one-third of the states LGBTQ+ residents are protected by local ordinances. Other protections flow down from the federal administrative actions a patchwork quilt of stop-gap measures that sows confusion and uncertainty. But its not just the presidency on the line. In Pennsylvania, downticket races like auditor general, who has the authority to assess state and federal contracts in more than 500 school districts in Pennsylvania, puts out candidates like Malcolm Kenyattaon the frontline of everything fromTitle IXcompliance to book bans and statewide athletics rules.Read more about Pennsylvania here. Wisconsin is the swing state needed to win the presidency. Can Democrats do it?More than 67% of Wisconsinites say theyre very enthusiastic about voting and every ballot will be critical in what many considertheswing state of the 2024 election.Earlier this year, Gov. Tony Evers (D) signed fair maps into law. These redrawn maps resulted from a 2023 lawsuit filed by theCampaign Legal Center (CLC)and others that blocked further gerrymandering.Candidates like District 18sKristen Alfheim, running for state senate, now have the opportunity to flip longtime Republican-led districtsTammy Baldwin, the first woman elected to represent Wisconsin in Congress and the first out senator in U.S. history, knows whats at stake, telling LGBTQ Nation, We cannot mistake progress for triumph in the fight for fairness, freedom, and full equality while LGBTQ+ discrimination persists. This November, the stakes could not be higher, says Baldwin. Once again, Wisconsin is the key battleground state to watch and Wisconsin voters will have the power to decide who controls the Senate, the White House, and ultimately the future of our nation. Dear Hollywood stop being a COWARDS and make Jonathan Bailey the KING of rom-coms
Okay, Hollywood, Im going to cut it to you straight actually, scratch that, Im going to cut it to you homo:We need a gay rom-com king, and its about damn time we hand that crown right on over to Jonathan Bailey.Hear me out.1. He's adorableFirst of all, he, himself, is just adorable. Lets take, for example, the following recent clip of an interview with him and Jeff Goldblum ahead of the Wicked premiere, where he found out what a zaddy was, owned his titled as a very young daddy with nine children. Its all sweet, innocent, and sexy just like him and is a perfect example of why he deserves this title. (@) 2. He's versatileAnd we mean hes versatile in multiple ways. According to Fellow Travelers, that could be in the bedroom, but in life, that definitely means on screen. Hes well-rounded as an actor and can play the rom-com king in period pieces, modern-day pieces, and more than likely whatever futuristic kinda stuff youd want to throw at him, as well.3. He can play straight or gayLets put aside the debate over whether straight actors should play gay roles for a moment and counterargue that gay men can, should, and have played straight roles just as often (Im looking at you, NPH from How I Met Your Mother.) Bailey can play opposite either a male or a female in his leading role as the rom-com king, so stop being so homophobic and get him up there.4. He's "in" right nowI mean, strike while the iron is hot, right? He got an Emmy nomination, a Critics Choice Award, and a Sattelite Award all in 2024, and I'm sure he'll get a lot more coming his way after Wicked comes out. Apart from that, it seems like everywhere you look, there he is. Dont limit him or put him in a box and keep him there. Were already in love with him, just let him be our king.5. He has chemistry with absolutely EVERYONE (@) Jonathan Bailey has a rare gift he has chemistry with absolutely everyone on the planet. When he turns those soulful eyes on any co-star, regardless of gender, you want nothing more than to see them kiss and you would die for their love. If that doesn't make him rom-com-king-worthy, what possibly could? 6. He's like a real life, living Disney Prince. (@) Everything this man does oozes appeal and sexuality. He is the human embodiment of a crush. GIVE THIS MAN A ROM-COM NOW. And start raking in those sweet, sweet, profits. 7. He deserves itHe deserves the title of rom_com king, but also, we, as a queer community, also deserve to see one of our own become a main Hollywood hearthrob. Move over, 90s Brad Pitt. Youll have a forever place in our hearts, but were Team Bailey all the way. So, Hollywood? What say you? We've made it very clear. Your move.

Scissoring vs. Tribbing: what's the difference & how to do both
Queer sex is expansive, it's creative, its only limit is the imagination of those involved. Which is to say, if you're new, it can be a little daunting. If you're looking to expand the ways you and your partners can experience pleasure together, especially in ways that prioritize non-penetrative sex, there are plenty, including tribbing and scissoring. You might have more questions than answers at this point like: What is scissoring? What is tribbing? How do you do it? How are they different from each other? Don't panic, I promise, it's not all as complex as it sounds. With the help of some instruction your sex ed classes certainly missed, you'll be a pro in no time.Tribadism: a brief introductionSee on InstagramIf sex is simply "friction that feels good," then tribadism delivers on that notion's fullest potential. "Tribadism", or "tribbing" for the cool cats out there, can be defined as "the act of rubbing genitals against a partner's body."That's it. Anytime you are humping, grinding, or scissoring against a partner's body (not just their genitals, but their hips, legs, pelvis, etc.), you're tribbing!Tribbing vs. Scissoring: What's the difference?See on InstagramExcellent question!Scissoring is specifically genital on genital tribbing. Some people find varying degrees of success with scissoring vs. other forms of tribbing, but it's definitely a thing (despite what many have come to think). No, it's not going to look like when you made your Barbies scissor (and we know you did) because humans have joints, and fat, and can get tired in strenuous positions. But with enough practice, communication, and trouble shooting, YES it is attainable for you to scissor if you really really want to.It's like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Scissoring is a form of tribbing, but not all tribbing has to be scissoring. Make sense? How do I start?See on InstagramIt can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. It can be just you, your partners, and your genitals tribbing away like the pioneers did it, or you can add extra forms of stimulation like vibrators or toys made specifically for grinding against. And in an activity so friction forward, lube can really make or break the experience, so don't be afraid to get wet!If it's your first time tribbing, don't start with scissoring. Scissoring requires a lot of finesse, as you're trying to rub just one another's genitals on each other. Start with other forms of tribbing with higher rates of success.Try straddling your partner's leg, you on one of their thighs, with one of your legs in between them. From here, both of you and able to take and receive pleasure from applying pressure with your legs. Or while spooning, the big spoon can grind against the butt of the little spoon, and the little spoon can grind right back. This guide provides helpful illustrations of how to align your bodies together. Most importantly, take your time, communicate together, and have fun! No one's going to be having a good time if you're so stressed about doing everything "correctly". There is no one correct way! The best way to make tribbing work is to be present in your body and lean in to what feels good (literally). Happy grinding!See on Instagram

Jill Steins running mate busted saying he doesnt believe in trans equal rights
Butch Ware the running mate of long-controversial Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein has been caught making comments against trans inclusion in sports. I dont think that biological males should play in female sports. I think it gives an unfair competitive advantage, Ware states in a short clip from an interview posted to X. The original interview source is unknown. Related Anti-trans ads are unpopular with voters, but are still deepening anti-trans outlooks Polls show that these ads are incredibly unpopular, but they still decrease acceptance of transgender people. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In a lengthy statement on Instagram, Ware claimed his words had been taken out of context and were misrepresented through selective editing, yet at the same time he appeared to affirm their accuracy. In context, I was engaging in what I thought was a discussion of nuanced policy on Olympic inclusion based on information shared by the IOC, not making a statement against trans inclusion. He blamed unethical people [who] are paid good money to twist the words and sully the name of good people, along with the fear and desperation of democrats to drive a wedge into the Green Party base. He called himself a lifelong advocate for LGBTQ+ people and apologized to anyone his out-of-context words offended. But then it got confusing. I do not in point of fact oppose inclusion of trans people in sports the question I thought I was responding to was about elite athletic competition, and I was essentially endorsing the IOC position that every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination and in a way that protects their health, safety, and dignity.[While maintaining] a level playing field, where no athlete has an unfair and disproportionate advantage over the rest.'He then explained that he was asked his personal opinion rather than his partys platform (the Green Party itself strongly supports trans rights but does not explicitly mention sports in the platform) and that party members dont have to agree with every policy. This is thought policing and indoctrination, not political freedom, he said. Ware has also been criticized for expressing the belief that there should be limitations on abortion rights after 16 weeks of pregnancy. Jill Stein's VP pick opens the door to a national abortion ban. Watch here: pic.twitter.com/BMtQphKqqU MoveOn (@MoveOn) October 31, 2024He addressed these comments in the same Instagram post, saying he has never taken a position against a womans right to choose and shared a quote from himself2022 emphatically supporting abortion rights and saying that abortion restrictions in several states are an infringement upon Muslim religious law, which permits abortion any time before birth to save the life of the mother.Ware also said his identity as a straight Black Muslim man makes him an easy target for accusations of transphobia and misogyny. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rudolph Ware (@butchware)Ware is a history professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a hip-hop artist. Jewish Insider has accused an album by his duo, Slum Prophecy, of celebrating the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Stein has been criticized for her repeated runs for president, which many believe contributed to Donald Trumps 2016 victory. While even members of her own family have asked her not to run this year, she has pushed on. 'I Kissed a Boy' star shares his homophobic attack in London and reveals NOBODY helped or cared
Dan Harry, one of the stars and winners of the UK reality dating series I Kissed a Boy, opened up about some homophobic abuse he recently endured while at London's King's Cross Station.Harry shared his story to the BBC, saying the incident happened after a date while he was waiting to take the London Tube home. Three men reportedly followed him down an escalator onto a train platform and began to whisper "horrible, homophobic slurs" in his ear."As the train was getting closer, I could feel them getting closer and closer to my back, and they were almost nudging me forward to the platform edge," he shared. "I remember feeling really scared and I didnt know what to do."Harry, who is also one of the subjects of the new documentary HIV, PrEP & Me, said that nobody around him "helped or said anything to me, and that almost stayed with me more than the initial homophobia."Harry also shared that he was so "overwhelmed" that he didn't alert the police. See on Instagram "If I could go back, I absolutely would report it," he said. He later told PinkNews why he held off. "Reporting helps with two things: it bring[s] justice and hopefully deter[s] people from committing hate crimes again, and it contributes to broader statistics that accurately illustrate the fundamental problem that needs to be addressed."He added that "the hardest part about what I experienced was hearing my mums reaction to me telling her what happened." His mother "always worries about these things happening to me because she knows LGBTQ+ people are targeted but I think most of my peers would agree that experiencing homophobia is something thats unfortunately a part of our lives, and something weve become accustomed to and have our own coping mechanisms to handle." See on Instagram Harry concluded that "the incident at Kings Cross was particularly hard because I felt I was in danger, literally on the edge of a train platform, and [people] were just standing by, watching it happen." He urges "anyone that if you happen to be sitting on a train platform, or a bus, or walking down the street, and you see someone experiencing homophobia, offer them some kindness and ask if they are OK."

Pete Buttigieg effortlessly convinces 12 swing-staters to vote for Kamala Harris
Pete Buttigieg, a surrogate for Kamala Harriss presidential campaign, flipped six out of 12 undecided voters to Kamala Harris in a just-released debate from Michigan. The event, sponsored by Jubilee Media, put Pete in front of 25 voters from his adopted home state who identified as either undecided, for Trump, for Harris, and a few who dont plan to cast a ballot. Related Pete Buttigieg brutally boils Donald Trumps racist New York rally down to just 2 words The rally speakers insulted Latinos and called Vice President Kamala Harris the devil and a sex worker. But Buttigieg said its part of a strategy. After the debate, 12 voters shared that theyll be voting for Harris, doubling the group committed to the Democratic nominee. Five were going with Trump, six were going to vote for third parties and three still intend to sit out the election. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today What I want voters like you to hear is, Anything but a vote for her works out to being a vote for him right now, because this is a swing state that could come down to a couple of votes per precinct. And one of those votes might be you, Buttigieg told the group. In formal debate style, Buttigieg threw out a thesis he defended with voters who chose to debate that issue in timed segments. With the clock counting down, the married father of two defended claims including Americans will have more rights and freedoms under a Harris/Walz Administration and Donald Trump is only running for himself, and Kamala Harris is running to make your life better. Topics covered ranged from LGBTQ+ rights and abortion access to crime and Trumps felony convictions.Buttigieg defended Harris pledge to fight for Americans fundamental freedoms, telling one voter about Harris and Trump, Theres more personal rights a womans right to choose, my right to have this ring on my finger that I feel are much more secure if she is in charge than if he is in charge.Asked for evidence of Donald Trump being against gay marriage or wanting to roll back protections for gay folks to be married, Buttigieg pointed to the 2016 Republican platform. The evidence is that he ran for president with a platform that specifically said in black and white that they were against marriage equality. Theyve kind of rubbed that out of the platform since the last time he ran for president, he continued, but the people he put on the court are contributing to a majority that already took away a womans right to choose and doesnt seem very interested in protecting my right to marry, nor did he do anything to help get that legislation passed. Harris has made a repeated point of calling out Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for saying the quiet part out loud in his assent in the Dobbs decision, singling out marriage equality, interracial marriage and other rulings based on similar reasoning to Roe v Wade as now under threat from the courts far-right majority. In an afterword, Buttigieg added, I certainly hope that I helped some people make a decision, that I helped move some people off the fence, or clear up some questions or doubts that they had. Most of all, I hope it was informative. Certainly, it was informative for me to hear from people and hear where theyre coming from.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

During a Buzzfeed interview, Henrie was asked to pick a guest character to appear in the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place revival. As he looked over the choicesStevie, Gigi, Juliet, Mason, Hugh, and ZekeHenrie paused, then delivered a snarky, I cant believe you guys put one of these people on here. The one of these people in question? None other than Zeke, Henries on-screen bestie, played by Benson. Benson, now openly active on OnlyFans, has embraced a career far from the Disney bubble. It seems Benson is thriving in his new line of workand isnt shy about it. But the burn didnt stop there. Trump has appointed numerous federal judges who oppose same-sex marriage, have sided with businesses to reject LGBTQ+ customers, and support ending reproductive rights.Republicans worry that GOP support for restrictions on abortion access could bring more pro-choice Democratic voters to the polls in the 2024 general elections. Since the overturning ofRoe v. Wade, voters in seven states have supported ballot measures strengthening abortion access, even in conservative states like Kansas, Kentucky, and Ohio. You shouldnt just be allowed to abuse famous people in the street, because you have your phone in your hand and want to make a video for attention. People who do this are degenerates. Kelce [was] right to smash his phone.Jason Kelces brother, NFL pro-football player Travis Kelce, has publicly dated Swift since summer 2023. Jason Kelce is an analyst for ESPNs NFL coverage; he played for 13 years with the Philadelphia Eagles. His brother currently plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.Jason Kelce spoke about the cell phone incident during ESPNsMonday Night Countdown, stating,Im not happy with anything that took place. Im not proud of it. And in a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just dont think that thats a productive thing.I dont think that it leads to discourse and its the right way to go about things, he continued. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldnt have. So, I think the bottom line is, I try to live my life by the golden ruleits what Ive always been taughtI try to treat people with common decency and respect, and Im going to keep doing that moving forward, even though I fell short this week. While neither of the Kelce brothers have made any public statements about the LGBTQ+ community, Swift has emerged as both an LGBTQ+ ally and a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. In her September 2024 endorsement, Swift wrote, Harris fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate [Minnesota Gov. On the frontline: Inside LGBTQ+ voters fight for rights in a divided America
Trans rights. The housing crisis. Voter suppression. Mental health. The LGBTQ+ communitys biggest concerns have dominated some candidates platforms and been weaponized by others. LGBTQ Nation engaged award-winning journalist and author Nico Lang to connect with queer folks across the country this election cycle and reveal how theyre mobilizing to ensure democracy and equality thrive in the future. These tough conversations from a mother forced to sleep in a van with her children after escaping Texass relentless legislative attacks on trans youth to a nonbinary Kansas resident facing challenges at the polls due to restrictive voter ID laws project a nation divided. But Lang also discovered hope fueled by action. Grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations and national coalitions have united to demand change. The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund has endorsed nearly 500 candidates in 2024 who have canvassed their respective communities with visibility never seen before. Take a closer look at whats on the ballot through the eyes of those facing unimaginable hurdles yet who remain optimistic that the American Dream can become a reality. Photo: Getty Images. Remi Buckley, an 18-year-old who lives in Alabama, cannot fathom what it would mean for those kinds of policies to be enacted. Although her statebanned gender-affirming carefor minors in April 2022, during the early days of her medical transition, she has still been able to access her hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through a Georgia-based telehealth provider. She has become more sociable and outgoing and no longer feels out of place as if she doesnt belong anywhere she goes.Having that newfound confidence taken away by a second Trump administration would be devastating. It would feel like I have to hide myself away again, which is a way I dont think anybody should have to live: acting like a ghost of their former self or of the person they want to be, Buckley told LGBTQ Nation. I dont really know what I would do. Steven Rocha, a 23-year-old teacher in Florida, knows how difficult it is to see your state make it more difficult to be yourself. In 2023, Florida passed its infamousParental Rights in Education Act, which initially banned teachers in K-3 classrooms from addressing topics related to the LGBTQ+ community. The bottom line is: A lot of trans people are going to get hurt under a Trump presidency, Rocha told LGBTQ Nation. Thats just a reality. Trans people are such a small minority, but our lives have just as much meaning and value as our cisgender counterparts. The stakes really could not be higher. Queer activists are fighting for a lifeline.Photo illustration by Matthew Wexler. The mental health of LGBTQ+ youth and adults is likely to be profoundly affected by the outcome of the2024 presidential race: If elected to the White House in November, former President Donald Trumphas pledged to take federal actionpreventing trans youth from accessing gender-affirming care.As the LGBTQ+ community nervously braces for an uncertain future, elected leaders are stressing the importance of prioritizing queer mental health as a political issue and raising increased visibility regarding thestruggles that some community members are facing. Its important to have people with lived experience at the table where decisions are made, Minnesota state representativeBrion Curran(D) told LGBTQ Nation. Its easy for some issues to get overlooked when theres not a person in the room directly dealing with that issue. In politics, oftentimes, some of these healthcare issues dont seem really flashy. They might get lost in the mix, and so its important that we have people like me with these life experiences in the room so that we can say, Hey, we cant forget about this. The housing crisis hits especially hard for families fleeing red states to protect their trans kidsAmber Green and her children slept in their van after fleeing Texas over the states persecution of trans youth. Despite all they had been through, Green knew they had no choice but to stick it out in Connecticut. After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued a February 2022 order directing the Department of Protective and Family Services to investigate parents of trans children for abuse, child welfare agents knocked on their door on three separate occasions.Theres still that fear that were going to have to leave everything behind again, Green told LGBTQ Nation.Families of trans youth fleeing hostile states are currently facing a cost-of-living crisis as they are forced to move to progressive areas that are also more expensive. With the election upon us, many fear there is no clear answer on the horizon. Many LGBTQ+ advocates say that federal action is needed to provide greater support to families who have been made refugees in their own country, and families of trans youth agree. Although 16 statesnow have laws or executive ordersin place to shield parents and children from prosecution for seeking gender-affirming care, these states, in many cases, remain ill-equipped to meet the complex needs of families. With a possible Kamala Harris presidency on the horizon, Kimberly Shappley whose 13-year-old daughter, Kai, is a prominent trans youth activist wants to see a potential Harris-Walz administration go further than President Joe Biden, who she feels has done little to protect families like hers. She believes the White House must offer guidance to trans sanctuary states so that they can respond effectively to the myriad ongoing crises that parents and children face.I dont know how Ill ever recover from all this, and Im scared because I now have no savings, Shappley told LGBTQ Nation. What do we do if Donald Trump wins?
Imagine a worst-case scenario in the aftermath.Vice President Kamala Harris wins the popular vote overwhelmingly, but Donald Trump prevails again in the Electoral College. Emboldened MAGA followers take to the streets to commemorate Trumps victory. Theyre met by a broad coalition of angry Harris supporters fighting for fundamental freedoms and protesting the will of the people denied. Riots follow. Biden calls out the National Guard to quell the violence it escalates and spreads. Harris certifies the Electoral College vote in a locked-down Capitol. Trump, inaugurated in a peaceful transfer of power at a barricaded White House, makes good on his promise to be a dictator on Day One and unleashes the military on U.S. citizens. Related Even if Donald Trump loses, he could still steal the election Trumps attempt to steal the 2020 election was just a dress rehearsal for a more organized effort this year. If that sounds impossible, consider every prediction about Trump since he descended his golden escalator in 2015, dragging the American public down with him into an electoral abyss. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today And still, Trump haunts our politics.Days before the 2024 election, as the wannabe authoritarian, sexual predator, and doddering racist struggles to open the door to a garbage truck, he inexplicably remains a threat to American democracy. The polls, as though collectively hedging their bets, show a neck-and-neck race against the alternative. He might just pull it off.But like the dizzying number of permutations a victory or loss in the seven swing states will mean on Election Night, its impossible to predict the result of a Trump victory, in particular for the LGBTQ+ community.Ever since 2016, I have not trusted my perceptions of what the U.S. electorate will do in presidential elections. I dont know what to expect, says Marc Robert Stein, a professor and historian of U.S. law at San Francisco State University who specializes in gender, race, and sexuality. If Trump does prevail, the past is prologue, Stein says.In some respects, LGBTQ people in the United States before the 1970s lived in a police state, vulnerable to state power, legal and extralegal policing, and denied basic rights. That doesnt mean that we lived under fascism, but it provides some clues about what LGBTQ people might justifiably fear about living under a fascist president.Trump fits the definition, Stein says.Ultranationalist, authoritarian, antidemocratic, anti-immigrant, anti-queer. Weve already seen the former president in action, banning trans service members from the military in his first term, pushing religious exemptions to LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination measures, his opposition to the Equality Act, his rollback of Obama-era protections for LGBTQ+ people, draconian cuts to HIV/AIDS prevention efforts and throwing up barriers to adoption and surrogacy for same-sex couples. Those same efforts and more have been pushed by Trumps administration in exile, including hundreds of lawsuits filed by the architect of his first-term immigration policies and a future propaganda minister in a Trump 2.0 Stephen Miller, with his America First Legal group going after woke corporations and school systems over LGBTQ+-inclusive policy, and in the Heritage Foundations Project 2025, which promises a dictatorial unitary executive to enact a biblically-based theocratic regime. We would likely see not only official neglect, la Reagan and AIDS, but also bans on LGBTQ-affirmative education, including sex education; elimination of government support for LGBTQ health initiatives, community centers, historical research projects, and historical landmarking; and a return to anti-LGBTQ immigration restrictions, Stein says. Trump and his team have drawn and would draw a great deal from traditions of foreign policy isolationism, economic protectionism, the imperial presidency, and the growth of executive power, he says. An effort to demonize the LGBTQ+ community would take lessons from the nexus of social, religious, and moral conservatism that extends all the way from the Moral Majority and Anita Bryants Save Our Children campaign in the 1970s to Moms for Libertys and Ron DeSantis Dont Say Gay crusade today.A veteran of those culture wars agrees.LGBTQ people especially transgender people will be used as the leading scapegoat to continue to drive a wedge between children and young peopleand a parents ability to support gender-affirming care, says Elizabeth Birch, former chair of the board of directors of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and executive director of the Human Rights Campaign from 1995 to 2004.Weve already seen that tactic in Trumps third campaign, as transgender people are used as a cudgel in a massive ad campaign to describe Democrats as radical. This particular brand of election season LGBTQ scapegoating is the latest in a long series of issues, from depicting homosexuals as predators to discriminatory ballot initiatives to military service to marriage equality and on and on, Birch says. But, she adds, The stakes here are more consequential and acute outside of AIDS than we have seen in many decades. We are seeing the still-early stages of fascism.Birch says an authoritarian Trump presidency would bring a purge of LGBTQ+ people from the government. My perspective is we have not been here before unless you think of the Lavender Scare of the 1950s. This is the 1950s at scale, she says. That era in history, Stein points out, was overtly hostile to LGBTQ+ people. The moral panic over gay people serving in the military, State Department, and throughout the government portrayed them as security risks on par with Communists allegedly infiltrating the government, seen in the parallel Red Scare led by Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his gay lieutenant Roy Cohn, later a mentor to Donald Trump. How far Trump could go down that road depends in part, Stein says, on what happens with congressional elections. If Trump were to win, we would have a fascist president and a Supreme Court that is not only conservative but fascist-enabling, judging by the Supreme Courts recent rulings on presidential immunity, executive power, abortion rights, and more. If the Senate and House are also controlled by fascists and fascist-enablers, thats the worst-case scenario.Examples of the effect of a far-right government trifecta with a sympathetic judiciary already exist in several red states that have battered LGBTQ+ rights recently, most notoriously in Florida under the leadership of another wannabe authoritarian, Gov. DeSantis, who has purged school curricula of woke ideology and created a climate of fear for LGBTQ+ youth, their parents and teachers with his signature Dont Say Gay legislation. Obviously, a Donald Trump victory will put some gas in the tank of far-right extremists and fascists who see an umbrella of support for their far-right fascist actions, says Zander Moricz, the youngest plaintiff in a lawsuit opposing the Dont Say Gay bill and a founder of the youth advocacy group SEE Alliance. It would exacerbate far-right bases across the country and give them a feeling of security in being more racist and being more transphobic and being more homophobic, because If the president of the United States can get away with it, then so can I.'Moricz agrees with Stein and Birch that the trans community is at the leading edge of a fascist strategy uniting their followers by demonizing the other. Donald Trump is excellent at weaponizing peoples fear against marginalized communities so that he is able to focus on issues that dont matter instead of the ones that do, because he actually isnt able to solve the problems that matter to American people. He has no functional experience in creating genuine policy, Moricz says. He is someone who exists to promote fear.Almost a decade of Trumps malignant political narcissism has had a downstream effect on his generation, Moricz believes especially for those marginalized groups of Black, brown, trans and queer young people. They have only ever known a political culture that specifically disenfranchises them, discriminates against them, and pushes us to the margins of societies. It creates an attitude where voting feels useless, where voting feels worthless, he says. Its another tactic straight out of the fascist playbook. That political culture, earning comparisons to the worst that history has to offer, weighs heavily on Stein.Even if Trump loses, Congress certifies those results, and the Supreme Court does not accept a Trump appeal, we are still going to wake up the next day to the sad reality that nearly fifty percent of the electorate, and perhaps fifty percent of the country, supported and support him, Stein says of Trump. Those are our neighbors, our family members, our employers, our employees, the people we see on the street, everyone around us. I can sometimes be optimistic, but I am despairing about that reality. For Birch, the specter of a Trump return to the White House feels different.Politically, its far more dangerous, she said.Rather than just using LGBTQ people and their lives as a tool of political division, now we are seeing a candidate stating openly he will hunt down his political opponents perhaps not at the top of the list, but if he wins, there will be a wall of backlash that builds for many years.Birch stopped short of imagining the worst. But he is not going to win, she predicted. Kamala is going to win. For the young activist Moricz, contemplating a Trump win means focusing on the resistance already underway in his states laboratory of democracy. The context in which that organizing will be done does change significantly, he says. But I think whats important to understand is that no matter who is in charge, the mechanisms that have worked for the queer and trans communities, the strategies that we have built together, the perseverance, the resilience that are innate in our community that will stay the same regardless. And that is what should hold hope out for people, because theres so much to be done. What we have to understand is that our young people are not going to become discouraged or become heartbroken by a Trump victory, says Moricz. We, like their bases, will be ignited by it.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Lauren Boebert demands Kamala Harris apologize for Joe Biden calling people like her garbage
The weekend before anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) faces her first Election Day in her new district, she had a message to voters: Vice President Kamala Harris owes her an apology. For something President Joe Biden did.Biden called all of us garbage, Boebert complained on X. She was referring to comments made by Biden in response to a comedian at Donald Trumps Madison Square Garden rally referring to Puerto Rico as a floating island of garbage. Biden was asked about those comments, and he responded in a way that could be interpreted as calling either Trumps supporters garbage or if an apostrophe in a White House transcript is to be believed the comedian garbage. Related Lauren Boebert called out by local paper for knowing nothing about her new district Shes switching districts but locals are mad she didnt do her homework on her new district. Trump has not apologized to the people of Puerto Rico for someone at his rally calling their entire island garbage, but Boebert is still furious that Biden would call anti-Hispanic racists garbage. That, of course, comes after her running mate called all of us MAGA Nazis.Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz compared the rally to a Nazi rally that was held at Madison Square Garden in 1939, but he didnt say that everyone who supports Trump is a Nazi.We are dealing with sick individuals who hate the American people! Boebert concluded. Biden called all of us garbage. Then the White House illegally edited the transcript to make it seem like he didnt.Meanwhile, Kamala has yet to apologize on her bosss behalf only saying that she doesnt agree with demonizing people based on who they vote for. That, of Lauren Boebert (@laurenboebert) November 1, 2024In responses, people seemed to think that it was a bit much for Boebert who has built an entire brand on flinging insults while leading a rather sordid personal life to demand Harris apologize to her for someone else possibly calling people like her garbage. Others noted that Trump has insulted Democrats to a much greater extent than Biden with Republicans, and he has not apologized for those insults.Trump called me human scum, cry more weirdo. pic.twitter.com/lwuBFY5sTT CB (@ConservBlue2020) November 1, 2024Im gonna hold your hand when I say this dear sweet Bobo, you are a giant steaming heap of garbage. What do we do if Kamala Harris wins?
Three-quarters of LGBTQ+ people plan to vote for Kamala Harris in the presidential race, but even if shes elected, some say there will still be work to be done to push her on issues like the genocide in Palestine and immigration if elected. They imagine an administration thats imperfect but is wildly more safe for them than an anti-LGBTQ+ Trump presidency.Im voting for Harris, but I am doing so acknowledging the shortcomings from the current administration on transgender people, says Erin Reed, an independent journalist who closely covers transgender political issues and has endorsed Harris. Related This election could be the most important moment in the history of LGBTQ+ rights With your vote, you can refute the maelstrom of tyranny Trump promises. Reed hopes Harris will promote research on the impact of anti-trans laws, use the Justice Department to handle human rights abuses, continue pushing on Title IX policy protecting trans youth in schools, and use her platform to be vocal about her support for transgender people. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Reed notes that the next president will choose Supreme Court justices and appoint federal judgesand that many issues related to transgender rights are decided by the courts. She trusts a Democrat much more than a Republican to appoint judges friendly to transgender rights. She also points out that a president will have the power over the federal budget and that dozens of anti-LGBTQ+ provisions were inserted into the last budget, blocked by Democrats and the Biden administration. She believes Harris would be less likely to allow such riders to go through than Trump, but that legislators and activists will need to advocate for Harris to take a stand for trans people, just as they did with Biden.Whenever we have a budget fighttheres going to be a budget fight in December immediately after the electionthese bills are going to come back, she says. With all of these senators being targeted with anti-trans ads, we could see more balking on transgender issues. So yes, I do still think that were going to need to push and I do still think were going to organize. Reed is concerned about Harriss lack of support for Gaza, as are many LGBTQ+ voters. Approximately 83% of Democrats support a permanent ceasefire and de-escalation of violence by Israel, and most LGBTQ+ people vote Democrat. The No Pride in Genocide movement is strong within the community, with tens of thousands taking action for a ceasefire, a divestment from weapons manufacturers, and an embargo of U.S. arms to Israel.Nearly 30,000 signed a petition for the Human Rights Campaign to support a ceasefire and this June dozens of protests by LGBTQ+ people disrupted Pride events calling for divestment from weapons manufacturers and companies with Israeli ties. Still, with a majority of LGBTQ+ voters supporting Harris, like Reed, Palestine doesnt seem to be enough of a priority to sway their voteIsrael/Palestine ranked eighth on a list of important issues for LGBTQ+ voters in a March poll by Pathfinder and GLAAD. For those for whom it is an important issue, it seems clear they will protest Harris to stop funding Israel as they have with Biden. Reed feels that Trumps anti-democracy and anti-immigrant policies take precedence. Shes worried he will usher in fascism, seriously harm transgender peoples lives, mass deport immigrants, and gut the government and military of anyone who doesnt agree with him. With Harris, she trusts democracy will be safe and that trans people will be safer.I dont think for one moment that Donald Trump would not use the office of the presidency to pull funding for schools that approve or that allow transgender people to live their lives, she says. This is something that hes said many times, and Democrats are not going to be willing to do that.Tanya Neslusan, executive director of the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ rights organization MassEquality, is enthusiastically voting for Harris and is one of the electors who will cast Massachusettss 11 electoral college votes (half of whom are LGBTQ+). As a mixed-race woman of Indian descent, she is excited for the possibility of representation in the White House. Having that representation is extremely important to me, she says. When I graduated from college in the mid-90s, I didnt see anyone who looked like me in politics even though thats what I always wanted to do my entire life, she says. As a woman of color, there just were not enough people there that I felt that it would be an insurmountable battle. If Harris wins, she adds, It gives not only little girls who look like me someone to look up to, but it also shows the kids who dont look like me that anyone can be in a position of power. She also points out that more progressive policies on housing, healthcare, economic and reproductive justice, criminal justice reform, and voter access impact LGBTQ+ people of color in particular. All issues that impact any marginalized people impact all of us, Neslusan says. Neslusan feels Harris shares her values, though she fears Harris will usher in increased immigrant enforcement policies and stricter guidelines for asylees that may negatively impact asylum seekers. Still, she believes Harris will be a strong supporter and protector of LGBTQ+ peopleespecially in comparison to Trump. There is the abject terror of being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and seeing what happened with the last Trump administration and wanting to fight that, Neslusan says. With what weve seen laid out in Project 2025, we cannot afford to gamble given Trumps record. She points out that having Harris and Walz in the White House will allow her not only to pass federal protections but also block any anti-LGBTQ+ bills from Congress. However, the burden falls to Congress more than the president to create pro-LGBTQ+ legislation for her approval, she says, as executive orders can be repealed by a future president. Nevertheless, Neslusan does hope Harris will pass executive orders to prevent the anti-LGBTQ+ bills around the country as a stopgap, just as Biden signed multiple LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination executive orders. Among dozens of other pro-LGBTQ+ actions, the Biden-Harris administration repealed the ban on transgender service members, created an X gender marker option on federal documents like passports, prohibited anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in healthcare by organizations receiving federal funding, and reaffirmed the right of transgender people to go to shelters that align with their gender identity.I think really the presidents role is to stop the hemorrhaging and keep this shift steady, but at the same time, having a more inspirational, progressive figurehead in place on our issues I think will really help stem the tide of some of these things, she says, and it will be good to have somebody in office who I trust will veto harmful measures to our community.Aaron Aceves, a creative writing professor in Austin and author of This Is Why They Hate Us, is one of the nearly one-in-five LGBTQ+ people planning not to vote for either Harris or Trump. I feel that the Democratic Party and their policies are negligibly different from the Republican partys policies, he says. Every time Ive voted for a Democrat, which has happened twice before with Hillary and Biden, Ive always hoped that there would be less deportation and the dissolution of detention centers on the border, but that just does not happen and it doesnt seem like theres any change. He says this time he wants his vote to be for something instead of against something, though he hasnt decided which third-party candidate will get his vote.Harris is trying really hard right now to court the right and shes going in that direction, more so even than Biden, and more so even than Hillary, he says, making me believe that she would be even stricter on immigration and harsher on treatment of immigrants. Aceves points out that the alarming number of anti-trans laws have happened under the Biden administration, noting that they have been introduced and passed at the state level, not the federal government. President Biden did issue a sweeping executive order expanding protections for gender identity and sexual orientation, but it has been challenged in the courts for months.I get why we want to beat Trump, but were not really beating the system that he upholds, Aceves says. Hes sort of this lightning rod for our anger, and we think if we beat him we beat everything that he stands for, but we dont. When he lost the presidential election, nothing really changed, but we got to say, Hey, at least its not Trump.Aceves rejects the popular argument that protesting will be more protected under Harris compared to Trump, largely based on his experience on his college campus during the encampment movement of the spring pushing universities to divest from Israel and weapons manufacturers. When we protested at the university I teach at I was picking students up from the ground as they were thrown by police, and this is under Biden, he says. We have a democratic presidency and theyre enacting violence on students protesting a genocide. I dont think it can be worse. While university leaders were the ones ordering the arrests, the president did not intervene, showing such suppression of free speech can happen no matter who is president. Aceves wishes Biden had made a public statement asking university presidents to stop sending militarized police after students.Acevesthe author of a book challenged in Virginia, Florida, and elsewheredoesnt think a Harris administration will help with book banning since the number of bans has risen astronomically even under Biden, similar to the police violence issue. While the bans come from local and state entities potentially out of reach of federal intervention, Biden did appoint an anti-book ban coordinator in the Department of Education last September, though there have been no news reports of results of the coordinators work, and book bans have continued to surge even more in the last year. Gaza is one of the defining issues for Acevess vote and he says he cannot support a candidate who supports the genocide of Palestinians. This is a key issue for many LGBTQ+ voters, many of whom are turned off by Harriss support of Israel. Reed says its one of the issues she hears about as important to LGBTQ+ and young voters.I just cant vote for the person whos allowing this to happen currently, Aceves says.Ultimately, the majority of LGBTQ+ voters support Harris because they believe she will support the community moreLGBTQ+ equality and anti-LGBTQ+ laws are the main issue motivating LGBTQ+ voters choice according to an August survey conducted by Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and research firm Community Marketing & Insights (CMI). LGBTQ+ voters seem to be motivated most by making sure Trump isnt in chargeworries about abortion bans, anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and conservative Supreme Court justices are top of the fears of a Republican in office. Reproductive rights are among the top two issues for LGBTQ+ voters in both the Pathfinder/GLAAD and HRC/CMI polls, along with LGBTQ+ rights and inflation. Many in the LGBTQ+ community expect a Harris administration to be safer for LGBTQ+ rights and abortion rights, but still will want to organize on those issues and others. For many, a Harris-Walz White House offers an absence of fear more than a presence of hope or excitement.I think that whenever we vote for a president, were not voting for somebody who we always love and completely agree with, were actually voting for a system that we organize under, and God, I would rather organize and report on and work on fixing things under a Harris administration than a Trump administration, Reed says.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
